Kiser finished fourth all-time in tackles (411) at UVA. Joined Luke Kuechly as the only LBs to lead the ACC in tackles three straight years. “I think I’ve been one of the more productive linebackers in college football over the past three years.” @CVRamsClub @DowntownRamsKiser calls being drafted by the Rams “a blessing… I’m so happy to be a Ram.”

32” ARMSKiser has used his instincts, hustle, and powerful tackling to become one of the most productive linebackers (both against the run and as a pass rusher) in the country during his three years on the field with the Cavaliers. The two-time All-Maryland pick and Baltimore Sun’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2012, Kiser redshirted his first year in Charlottesville. He made 15 tackles in 12 games as a reserve as a freshman, tying for the team lead with nine stops on special teams. Kiser was installed in the middle of the Cavs’ defense in 2015 and finished his second-team All-ACC sophomore year with a conference-leading 115 tackles (13 for loss, 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles). The hits kept coming in his junior campaign, as Kiser was a first-team Associated Press All-American and All-ACC pick after ranking third in the country with 11.2 tackles per game (134 total, 10 for loss, 6.5 sacks, seven passes defensed) and tying for fifth in the FBS with five forced fumbles. He ranked among the nation’s leaders in tackles again in 2017, receiving third-team AP All-American and first-team All-ACC honors with 145 stops (50 solo), 9.5 for loss, five sacks, four pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries.

Draft Projection
Round 4
Overview
Kiser’s impressive production didn’t happen on accident and teams will have to weigh his consistent ability to make plays with his modest athletic ability and overall play speed. Kiser is a banger built to play inside the box, but he has limited range and may not offer much coverage ability. Unless he runs well and puts together a solid workout, he could fall in this draft, but his toughness and production give him a shot to be a backup.
Strengths
Built with a sturdy base and banger’s frame
Quick to diagnose and respond
Makes tackles near the line of scrimmage and doesn’t wait on running backs to get to him
Recognizes cutback lanes and fills the fit to look up runners in the cutback lane
Tough guy who likes contact
Brings it to second level climbing blockers with stiff shoulder or a powerful punch
Has the play strength and leverage advantage to play under blocker’s pads
Willing to fire downhill into his run fits to close off the lane
Never over-pursues
Tackle production and impact play totals are staggering with 397 tackles, 33.5 tackles for losses, 19 sacks and eight forced fumbles over three years as a starter
Weaknesses
Possesses thickly bundled hips that limit bend and movement
Short stepper short area trigger burst
Needs to do better job of dropping pad level as a tackler
Running backs can drive through his contact and fall forward for additional yardage
Makes a lot of tackles but will miss a lot of tackles as well
Below average play speed and burst create challenging tackle angles once he gets to the spot
Gradual in his change of direction movement
Doesn’t have desired NFL range
Sluggish lateral quickness means he better diagnose early
Is a liability in man coverage
Will struggle to match patterns from man coverageApril 29, 2018 at 12:04 am #85631znModeratorMyles Simmons@MylesASimmons

Three-year starter and Campbell Trophy winner from Baltimore, MD. Three straight years leading the ACC in tackles per game is sure gain notice. Has been a rock in he middle of the Virginia defense ever since he was put into the starting lineup in 2015. The two-time All-America and three-time All-ACC selection might be short on athletic ability and potential, but is head and shoulders above most linebackers when it comes to instincts and nose for the ball. At his best between the tackles immediately following the snap. His first 2-3 steps are almost always in the right direction and it gains him initial positional advantage on blockers. Excels at taking on blocks and shedding them. Gets his powerful hands inside with a low pad level and finds the ball carrier in traffic. An excellent wrap up tackler who hits with enough force to jar the ball loose on contact. He is comfortable in space, as he was matched up against receivers and tight ends up the seam. The athleticism struggles mainly have to do with long speed and explosion. Has a hard time adjusting weight laterally and it could put him a step behind the action against NFL speed. There is some awkward movement to him in space. Seems like an ideal fit for a team looking to fill the two down inside linebacker role, preferably in a 3-4 where his play in space isn’t needed as often. He will bring top notch intangibles and football instincts to the table. Players with this kind of production matched with this kind of football IQ should never be overlooked. 2017 stats: 145 T, 9.5 TFL, 5 sacks, 4 PBU, 2 QBH. Edge speed : left 1.97, right 2.11. OSR: 12/22. Fourth/fifth round. (A-32, H-9, BP-DNP, SS-4.24).

MICAH KISER | Virginia 6003 | 238 lbs. | rSR. Baltimore, Md. (Gilman) 1/25/1995 (age 23.3) #53
BACKGROUND: A three-star linebacker recruit out of high school, Micah Kiser was the 2012 All-Metro Defensive Player of the Year and attracted almost 20 collegiate offers. With his impact on the field and in the classroom, he narrowed his college choice to Stanford, Virginia and Maryland, choosing the Cavaliers. After redshirting in 2013, Kiser was mostly a special teams player in 2014, collecting 15 tackles. He became a starter as a sophomore and led the ACC with 117 tackles, adding a team- best 13.0 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and three forced fumbles to earn Second Team All-ACC honors. Kiser started all 12 games as a junior and again led the ACC with 134 total tackles to earn All-American and First Team All-ACC honors, also posting 10.0 tackles for loss and a career-best eight passes defended and his only career interception. He returned for his senior season and for the third straight season he led the conference in tackles (145), adding 9.5 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks to earn First Team All-ACC honors. Kiser accepted his invitation to the 2018 Senior Bowl.
STRENGTHS: Physical and fast to the hole…downhill speed to corral ballcarriers before they reach the line of scrimmage…quick feet and aggressive hands to work off blocks…trusts his backfield vision with his eyes glued on the ball…football smart and has been making defensive calls since high school…form tackler, sticking his shoulder in the gut of the ballcarrier and wrapping his hands to finish…outstanding timing and closing acceleration as a blitzer – finds the soft spots, gets skinny and doesn’t let off-balance blocks slow him down (ranks top-10 in Virginia history with 19.0 career sacks)…well-rounded individual and strives to make an impact on and off the field – classroom and community are important to him…winner of the 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy, which is also known as the “Academic Heisman” – graduated with an undergraduate degree in foreign affairs (May 2017) and currently pursuing a master’s in higher education (3.42 GPA)…led the football team’s response to the Charlottesville riots, including a photo of team unity with arms interlocked…led the ACC in tackles each of the last three seasons and no active college football player has more tackles (411) over the last three years…proven durability, playing every game the past four seasons, including 37 straight starts.
WEAKNESSES: Limitations moving laterally…doesn’t have the change of direction skills or burst to turn and cover backs or tight ends in coverage…allows too much spacing in zone and man coverage and late to react…ordinary range and won’t narrow the gap chasing…often plays too fast downhill, hindering his ability to calm his feet and break down vs. shifty ballcarriers…only one career interception.
SUMMARY: A three-year starter at Virginia, Kiser lined up at MIKE linebacker in the Cavaliers’ 4-3 scheme in 2015 before moving to the inside MIKE position in a 3-4 base the past two seasons under the current coaching staff. His character and production are both off the charts, boasting the leadership traits welcomed in any locker room to help keep order. Kiser cleans up in the run game with his instincts, mentality and physical nature to work through blocks and blow up the ballcarrier – averaged double-digit tacklers per game the last two seasons. He lacks ideal athleticism in space and his limitations show when asked to redirect or handle cover assignments. Overall, Kiser would be a much higher draft pick 20 years ago, but in today’s NFL he projects as a two-down thumper you want moving downhill only and on special teams.

micah doesn’t have the pure speed and explosiveness of wagner. but he seems plenty agile. also got an unusual amount of sacks. so wonder if he can contibute as a blitzer.
May 5, 2018 at 8:29 pm #85933znModeratorMicah Kiser in his own words:
On his reaction to becoming a Los Angeles Ram:
“I’m pumped. This is a blessing. I knew along, I knew the Rams organization liked me as a player and were interested. I’m just so happy to be a Ram, so glad that they chose me.”
On what he brings to Los Angeles:
“I’m a very smart linebacker, a leader on the field, and a great player. Very productive, I think I’ve been one of the more productive linebackers in college football over the last three years. I’m just going to come in and do whatever they want me to do — special teams, linebacker. I’m just all about the team and I’m just a football player.”
On if he believes he can come in and make an immediate impact:
“You know the roster, but everyone at this level is a pro, so you have to come in and work. Anyone can play. Anyone that gets picked in this draft or is a veteran, is a great football player. So, I’m just ready to come in and put my best foot forward and be as productive as I can. I feel like I’ve done a lot at the college level and it’s only going to get better.”
May 19, 2018 at 2:46 pm #86292znModeratorAfter Winning Campbell Trophy, Kiser Ready for Challenge of NFL
Myles Simmons
Rams rookie linebacker Micah Kiser is best known on the field for leading the ACC in tackles three years in a row. It’s a feat previously accomplished by now Panthers All-Pro linebacker Luke Kuechly.
“I just play hard — that’s just what I do,” Kiser said this week. “You play linebacker, you want to make as many tackles as you can. So [I’m a] hard-nose player, [give] great effort all the time, and I was really smart so I could make a lot of plays.’
But if there’s anything that separates Kiser from many of the players in his draft class, it’s what he said about being “really smart.” Sure, it’s tough to be a football player at any level and succeed without a proper above-the-neck approach. But the Virginia product takes that to a very high level.
Kiser was awarded the Campbell Trophy after the 2017 season. You may not have heard of the honor, but it’s given by the National Football Foundation to the college football player with the best combination of academics, community service, and on-field performance.
Informally, it’s known as the academic Heisman.
So, yes, that was a big deal for Kiser and his family.
“My parents raised me to do everything I can to the best of my abilities, so they invested in me going to good schools from an early age — great high schools, great middle schools,” Kiser said. “I went to a great University at UVA that had great influences and people to help me out. I took advantage of everything I had in my life and wanted to be the best at everything I was doing. On field, I was striving to be the best and then off field I was striving to be the best as well.
“That’s just the kind of guy I am,” Kiser continued. “That’s what my makeup is all about and I want to keep doing that in the future.”
It seems like it would be difficult to balance being so successful in both academics and athletics, but Kiser said his support system at Virginia enabled him to be successful in both areas.
“I’ve been doing it my whole life really,” Kiser said. “I went to the Gilman School in Baltimore which is a pretty hard school, a college-preparatory school. But we also had great athletics as well, so I was balancing those then. Went to UVA and like I said, the athletic administration there is great at helping you, getting you the academic support you need. And the coaching staff is great. I had a lot of positive influences and a lot of great help, so they made it — I’m not going to say easy ,but they helped me along the way. I just took advantage of it all.”
Kiser graduated from UVA with a bachelor’s degree in foreign affairs and is pursuing a master’s degree in higher education.
“I’m halfway through that,” he said. “I’m very interested in athletic administration and hopefully when I get some time, I can go back and finish that.”
But until then, he’s focusing on football — a game he loves and is quite passionate about.
“I can remember early on in life when I was six years old, when I turned six the Ravens had won the Super Bowl,” Kiser said. “I was very big into football and my dad got us the Super Bowl tape and every Saturday I used to watch basically the whole season from start to finish. I would watch it every single Saturday and I would know all the players. For my sixth birthday, I got my own room and it was Ravens-themed. I got all the players autographs and just loved the game from an early age.
“I played flag football, played tackle football since I was eight, played high school ball. Just always been around football and being on a team, being around the guys, and just working hard and being selfless to achieve something greater than yourself,” Kiser continued. “That’s what this culture here with the Rams is all about. It’s we not me and it’s the standard and that’s just all about being bought in for the team. Just how I came up and coming up here is a great fit.”
