The reported Colin Kaepernick trade request: How did the 49ers not see this coming? Or did they just lie the whole time? Or both?
link: http://blogs.mercurynews.com/kawakami/2016/02/25/the-kaepernick/
* Friday morning update: I can triple-confirm Rand Getlin’s report that Kaepernick’s agents have requested permission to seek a trade. I do not yet know if 49ers management has given a response to the request–they are not known to react quickly to new events.
The precise wording of this is important because it means Kaepernicks’ agents want to negotiate with other teams to set up a contract adjustment before moving to the new team. Few teams have the cap space or desire to take on the $11.9M base salary Kaepernick is due in 2016. You need to talk to potential acquiring teams before a deal in order to figure out the possible contract terms. It is exceedingly unlikely that Kaepernick would not accept a contract adjustment to remain on the 49ers.

The 49ers absolutely don’t know how to handle absolutely any of this, which is probably one reason among 1 billion why Colin Kaepernick absolutely wants out of there. If there is a wrong turn or false move to make, if there is a public-relations tumble to take, somebody in a 49ers leadership position will do it.
It’s like they’re compelled to commit public idiocy on a regular basis.
Let’s assume that Kaepernick has had enough of this, and let’s assume that the proof is the NFL Network’s Wednesday report that his agents have sought permission to seek a trade.
And let’s assume that the timing of the report was not incidental.
It came just a few hours after coach Chip Kelly told local reporters that Kaepernick wants to stay on the team and a day after general manager Trent Baalke said Kaepernick “absolutely” will be on the team past the April 1 deadline to guarantee his $11.9 million salary for 2016.
Well, I think the most natural 49ers follow-up to all this would be: Oops, never mind for now.
Of course, the 49ers do not have to grant the permission or agree to trade Kaepernick to a preferred destination even if they allow talks.
But this isn’t exactly a positive sign for Kaepernick’s continued presence on the 49ers roster, I think we can conclude that.
Look, if you’ve been following this situation from both sides, not just swallowing the 49ers’ PR line whole, you had to know there were storms ahead.
You had to know that Kaepernick logically felt betrayed by all the petty leaks from 49ers management last season and understandably had decided never to adjust his contract for the 49ers, after he gave up large bonus money so that the 49ers (he thought) could spend it to re-sign it on some of his teammates. The 49ers never actually spent that money; they kept it, fired Jim Harbaugh, Kaepernick’s biggest fan, and then spent much of the 2015 season blaming their downfall on their QB.
So the off-season is here and now Kaepernick reportedly wants out. This does not seem illogical, unless you’re Jed York or Trent Baalke, I guess.
I would assume Kaepernick’s agents want to find a team of his choice that will trade for him and then re-do his deal, perhaps give him the same amount of money spread over several eyars.
The teams I would circle: Denver, the New York Jets, Houston and Cleveland.
If they can’t find a trade, then Kaepernick probably would be just as happy getting released and becoming an unrestricted free agent.
Would any team give up, say, a mid-round pick for a QB who was benched for Blaine Gabbert last season and underwent multiple surgeries recently?
I think so, because Kaepernick would presumably agree to a new deal as part of a trade agreement and the surgeries were relatively minor.
And also: How many available 28-year-old QBs out there have three career road playoff victories and also used to scare the heck out of Seattle?
Yes, teams will line up to talk to him, and Kaepernick’s agents know this.
So, even if the 49ers didn’t know this report was coming (I think they should’ve) Baalke’s stance on Tuesday was just foolish.
Baalke never once actually said the 49ers planned to pay Kaepernick the $11.9 million for the 2016 season, so I always assumed Baalke meant that the 49ers would like to have Kaepernick around, probably at a lesser salary.
But there is no way that Kaepernick would agree to that–unless Kaepernick somehow became utterly committed to Kelly, and there is no sign of it.
Meanwhile, Kelly’s comments on Wednesday were slightly more thoughtful but still pretty clunky for somebody who couldn’t possibly know where this might be headed.
More: Oops.
For Kaepernick, I believe the worst-case scenario is for the 49ers to keep him at $11.9 million (which is not so bad!).
Overall, his agents want him to get a new start with an organization that hasn’t spent months denigrating him to national media members.
So, going semi-public with a trade request makes it harder for the 49ers to stomach carrying him at $11.9 million into this season.
They could still decide to do that, of course. But, as I keep saying, it never has been the likeliest option.
Kaepernick doing whatever he could to get out? That was the likeliest, and it looks like it just started.
The 49ers lie to themselves, everything else spins from that, and this week it all just blew up in their faces, one more time.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — While new San Francisco 49ers coach Chip Kelly gave the impression Thursday that Colin Kaepernick wants to return to the team, sources told ESPN’s Adam Caplan that Kaepernick’s agents have requested permission from the team to seek a trade.NFL Network first reported the trade request.
That would fly in the face of what Kelly, who chose to speak to beat writers in a private setting rather than at the open podium session, said earlier Thursday at the NFL combine.
“He wants to be here,” Kelly told reporters. “He’s never expressed to me that he didn’t want to be here. He expressed to me that he’s excited about getting healthy and getting going. And we’re excited about him getting healthy and getting going.”

Kaepernick’s future with the team appeared to be in limbo anyway. He is recovering from surgeries to his left shoulder, right thumb and left knee, and on April 1 his $11.9 million base salary for 2016 becomes guaranteed. There also is a seemingly growing mistrust between player and organization after he was benched midway through the season and after a 2-6 start.Kaepernick chose to have private doctors perform his procedures, rather than team doctors.
Still, Kelly told a different story earlier Thursday.
“He’s seemed excited every time I’ve talked to him,” Kelly said. “I’ve also learned to not believe everything that’s on the Internet.
“There’s a reason he was on IR. I mean, there was something wrong with him.”
Kelly, like Niners general manager Trent Baalke a day earlier, also gave the impression he expected Kaepernick at the team facility for the beginning of the offseason training program on April 4, three days after Kaepernick’s salary becomes guaranteed in case of injury.
“Kap’s really good,” Kelly said. “I mean, he had the ball on the 5-yard line [about] … to win a Super Bowl. You can just look at the tape to see how talented he is. You know, our job is acquiring talent, not getting rid of talent.”
Kelly drew some criticism during his stint with the Philadelphia Eagles after the manner in which he got rid of such players as DeSean Jackson, LeSean McCoy and Evan Mathis.
His praise of Kaepernick on Thursday contrasted with the lukewarm endorsement he gave at his introductory news conference, when Kelly also praised the job done by Blaine Gabbert.
“You’ve got to see them in general,” Kelly said Thursday. “I think one of the misconceptions is how somebody can evaluate a tape and say, ‘This guy made the wrong decision.’ You don’t know what the play call was.”
And now, Kelly might not know whether Kaepernick wants to play for him or wants to be traded away from the organization that drafted him in 2011.

I would say that right now, based on what we saw last year, that Keenum is better overall than Kaepernick.

I don’t know about that, but even if he’s an improvement, it’s not by enough to make it worthwhile to give up any resources to get him.

Will it take a second-round pick to land Kaepernick?By Kevin Patra

Updated: March 10, 2016 at 11:20 a.m.The biggest question following the flurry of free agent moves on the first day of the new league year is what in the name of St. Peter will the Denver Broncos do at quarterback?
With Brock Osweiler getting a huge payday in Houston and Peyton Manning retiring, the Broncos will become just the second team in NFL history to win a Super Bowl and go into the following season without their top two quarterbacks (2001 Ravens).
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport has previously reported the Broncos are interested in seeking a trade for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
But at what price?
NFL Media columnist Mike Silver reported Thursday that the 49ers likely want a second-round pick for Kaepernick and the Broncos might be willing to part ways with a third rounder.
“I believe that Colin Kaepernick is the target for the Denver Broncos,” Silver said on NFL Network’s NFL HQ. “I believe the 49ers are amendable to trading him. Whether it is a (third-round pick) a (second-round pick) if that’s what it takes. I think right now they’re doing a dance. But I expect the Denver Broncos to go out and get Colin Kaepernick as their top option.”
Silver later added that another team is pursuing a deal for Kaepernick, and he believes the quarterback is “on the verge of being traded.”
Elway has heaped praise on the Kaepernick in the past, including prior to last season when he said after joint practices with the 49ers, “I’ve always liked Colin,” per CSN Bay Area
Silver reports Kaepernick is likely willing to restructure his contract to the Broncos’ liking to facilitate a trade — even if his deal is somewhat team-friendly already.
The 49ers have insisted they want Kaepernick on their team and Chip Kelly has wanted to work with the athletic quarterback in the past. But could that all be posturing to get a higher pick back in exchange?
Kaepernick’s agents have made it know he would like to be traded. Right now the best landing spot outside of the Bay Area is Denver.
For now we wait for the dance to unfold to see if a trade comes to fruition.

http://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/Will-49ers-Chip-Kelly-Colin-Kaepernick-ever-7044875.php
Chip Kelly has a reasonable explanation for Colin Kaepernick’s 2015 nosedive, but it just happens to be inaccurate.
In Kelly’s telling, the 49ers’ quarterback struggled because of injuries to his left shoulder, right thumb and left knee, all of which have required surgery since late November.
“I think people forget about that,” Kelly said last month at the combine. “… There was something wrong with him.”
On Wednesday, at the NFL owners’ meetings in Boca Raton, Fla., Kelly delivered the same message to reporters: “It’s not like his skill set diminished,” Kelly said. “… He didn’t fall off. He got hurt.”
The problem with Kelly’s argument: Kaepernick was statistically better last year after his first significant injury.
To review: Kaepernick was healthy for the season’s first three games before suffering a shoulder injury that was later revealed to be a torn labrum in Week 4. He tore a thumb ligament in Week 7 and hurt his knee in Week 8, which was his last start before he was benched.
In his first three starts, when he was healthy, Kaepernick three two touchdown passes and four interceptions and had a 71.1 passer rating. In his final five starts, he threw four touchdown passes and one interception and had an 83.4 rating.
This isn’t news to Kelly, an offensive mind attuned to quarterbacks who realizes Kaepernick’s issues extend beyond physical ailments. So why is Kelly ignoring the truth to woo an unhappy player whose passer rating has declined in each season since his dazzling 2012 debut?
Well, Kelly’s situation is similar to what Jim Harbaugh faced when he was hired by the 49ers in 2011: Harbaugh saw potential in Alex Smith, the 2005 No. 1 overall pick, but he also couldn’t be too picky. His other on-the-roster options included David Carr and Troy Smith. Five years later, Kelly’s only other quarterback with starting potential on the current roster is Blaine Gabbert.
Harbaugh, of course, persuaded Smith, then a free agent, to re-sign with the 49ers and helped jump-start his languishing career. It’s possible a similar scenario could unfold with Kelly and Kaepernick, who has requested a trade but remains with the 49ers despite spending more than two weeks on the open market.
On Thursday, the chances of Kaepernick staying with 49ers might have increased when a potential trade partner — the Browns — signed former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III.
With the Browns no longer a trade option, the Broncos are the only other team that has negotiated with the 49ers. However, talks with the Broncos have stalled because they reportedly have placed a fourth-round value on Kaepernick.
The 49ers have maintained they are prepared to keep Kaepernick and pay him his $11.9 million base salary, which becomes guaranteed next Friday.
Still, it’s premature to say Kelly will get his chance to resurrect Kaepernick’s career.
It’s telling that Kelly’s private conversations with Kaepernick — combined with Kelly’s public praising — haven’t persuaded the quarterback to rescind his trade request.
It highlights the fact that Kelly faces a more difficult challenge than Harbaugh inherited. In 2011, Smith was disenchanted with the 49ers largely because he thought he’d been undermined and mismanaged by defensive-minded head coaches Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary. Given that, Smith was swayed by the chance to finally play for a head coach with offensive chops.
Unlike Smith, Kaepernick’s issues are largely with the 49ers’ still-intact front office, which he believes has undermined him.
As a result, Denver general manager John Elway might be waiting on the 49ers to see how they answer this question: Are they really willing to give their biggest salary to the player who might have the biggest problems with the organization?
Kelly has said he’s excited to work with Kaepernick, once his body has fully healed.
The problem for Kelly: Kaepernick’s bruised feelings could lingerMarch 31, 2016 at 6:58 pm #41280znModeratorColin Kaepernick’s $11.9 million base salary for ’16 now guaranteed
At 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, Colin Kaepernick’s $11.9 million base salary for the 2016 season became guaranteed, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
Now, whether it is paid by the San Francisco 49ers or some other team that would acquire the quarterback in a trade remains to be seen.
Kaepernick still could make less money from any acquiring team should he agree to a pay cut as part of the deal. It had been reported that his salary would not become guaranteed until Friday, and technically, that is true. But with the league day ending at 4 p.m. ET, the calendar flips to the next day, hence the contract status changing Thursday.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that Kaepernick was expected to remain with the 49ers past April 1, but trade talks regarding the quarterback were expected to continue up to and throughout the NFL draft from April 28-30.
The Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos, who lost Peyton Manning to retirement and Brock Osweiler to the Houston Texans in free agency, have long been linked to Kaepernick, reportedly envisioning him competing with the recently acquired Mark Sanchez. But a restructured Kaepernick contract would seemingly be a necessity to any trade with Denver.

Broncos reportedly still want Kaepernick
49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s $11.9 million base salary for 2016 officially is guaranteed. Unofficially, the Broncos remain interested in trading for him.
Mike Klis of 9News.com reports that the defending Super Bowl champions have an ongoing interest in Kaepernick. Per Klis, G.M. John Elway knew that the 49ers wouldn’t be cutting Kaepernick before the salary guaranteed vested as of 4:00 p.m. ET on Thursday. (Elway also possibly realized that Kaepernick couldn’t be cut before the April 1 trigger because he apparently isn’t healthy.)
The Broncos would want Kaepernick to reduce his compensation package to facilitate a trade. Failing that, Denver would look for the 49ers to pay some of the salary.
Much of the final outcome depends on whether Kaepernick changes his mind about playing in San Francisco, and whether the 49ers truly want him around. Unless both sides embrace the possibility of making the most out of Kaepernick’s talents with coach Chip Kelly running the team, a divorce seems inevitable; the only questions are when it would happen, how much another team would give up to get him, and how Kaepernick’s contract would be adjusted.

San Francisco and Denver have the parameters of an agreement in principle on a trade for Colin Kaepernick, sources said, but before any deal can be completed, the quarterback and the Broncos still have to agree on a restructured contract, and the two sides have not been close.
Kaepernick and the Broncos continue talking, trying to see if they can bridge their contractual differences, sources said.
Kaepernick is due to make $11.9 million in base salary this season and has a $15.9 million salary cap number for 2016. The Broncos want a much friendlier cap number and contract, and need to see whether they can get it.

The agreement on trade compensation between Denver and San Francisco will not be an issue in any potential trade for Kaepernick, sources said. The compensation is expected to be some type of mid-round pick.
The real question is whether the Broncos and Kaepernick can work out a restructured deal; the Broncos and 49ers already have the parameters of theirs in place.

The deal is expected to be for a mid-round pick. The Broncos and 49ers have agreed on compensation, but Kaepernick’s contract remains a holdup. Discussions about a potential deal to send Colin Kaepernick to the Denver Broncos appear ongoing, but all signs point to the embattled quarterback attending the start of the 49ers’ voluntary offseason program Monday.
ESPN reported Sunday morning that the Denver Broncos are willing to pay $7 million of Kaepernick’s $11.9 million salary for the 2016 season, but they want the 49ers to pick up the rest.
Late Sunday, an NFL source indicated Kaepernick would be in Santa Clara for the start of OTAs, the Sacramento Bee’s Matt Barrows reported. A photo of Kaepernick purportedly boarding a plane for the Bay Area also popped up on Twitter.
The backdrop of the will-he-or-won’t-he-show-up drama is that the teams apparently are close to finalizing a trade if the money for Kaepernick’s 2016 salary can be worked out. But the 49ers have been unwilling to pay the remaining $4.9 million of Kaepernick’s salary, and the quarterback is unwilling to forfeit that money so the deal can go through, the ESPN source said.
Money is the only issue, according to ESPN. The compensation involved can be finalized “with one phone call.” The 49ers would get a midround pick.
Kaepernick reportedly has met twice with Broncos general manager John Elway, including Thursday at Elway’s Colorado home as the franchise looks at its options t

Rams Junkie
The Kap situation has ramifications for the quarterback availability in the draft.
On Path to the Draft Jeremiah said it looks like it will come down to the draft. He referred to it as musical chairs and said we will have to have some of the players seated before we see what happens with Kap. He mentioned Harvard. He also said a team that did not get the QB they wanted in the draft will make a trade for Kap.
I would expect either Denver or the 49ers are going to take one of the top QBs off the board and it will be the team who does not have Kap.
If you are pulling for the Rams to trade up for Goff maybe you hope that Kap stays a 49er so they give Kelly and Kap a year to work together and not turn Kap into Tre.
If you are pulling for the Rams to draft Lynch (and not having Elway trying to trade up to 14) then you are hoping for Kap to Denver.
If you are hoping for a WR at 15 and Cook with a 2nd round pick you are probably hoping for Kap to Denver .
In any event it will be interesting.

Midway through the offseason program and four months shy of the season opener, 49ers coach Chip Kelly isn’t near ready to reveal who’ll be his starting quarterback between Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert, Cam Inman of Bayareanewsgroup reports.
“I have no idea,” Kelly told KNBR 680-AM, sounding half-joking and half-coy. “We’re not playing a game until September. At this point in time, it’s early, and one of the players, Colin, is injured right now, so he’s not been a full participant in everything.”
Kelly doesn’t anticipate the quarterback duel to truly unfold until training camp starts in late July, when Kaepernick should be closer to full health following rehabilitation on his surgically repaired right thumb, left shoulder and left knee.
“Kap’s at every meeting. Kap’s at rehab. Kap’s at every practice, doing what he can,” Kelly added. “We don’t know exactly what we have until we get those guys up and running. That won’t be determined until preseason camp.”
“He’s still working extremely hard in the rehab part,” Kelly continued. “I think people forget he had a thumb injury, a shoulder injury and a knee injury that he’s coming off of. So right now, Blaine is out there, Thad Lewis is with us, and Jeff Driskel are the ones taking the snaps in the offseason program.”
