NFL chat with Jim Thomas
http://sports.live.stltoday.com/Event/NFL_chat_with_Jim_Thomas_14?Page=3
I hope the Rams draft the next Tim Couch and set themselves back the next 10 years….what were your thoughts on the trade?
by Ray Ray Armstrong 2:11 PM[/i]I was very surprised. For one, the Rams didn’t have that many picks to begin with. They have a lot of needs to address on this roster _ more than I thought they’d have at this time of the year. For another, I don’t think Wentz and Goff _ on paper _ are even at the level as prospects that Winston and Mariota were last year. If it works out, good for the Rams But it really seems like almost a desperation move to me.
by jthomas 2:14 PMAt the very top of the draft, teams hope to finf future Hall of Famers. I understand that they hope to find starters through the first three rounds of any draft. What does one typically expect to find in rounds 4-7? Eventual starters, career back-ups, only special teamers?
by bfulton 2:14 PMYou look for exactly what you’re talking about on Day 3 _ eventual starters, depth players, special teamers. But you never know. Tom Brady was a sixth-rounder; WR Marques Colston was a seventh-rounder. Over the years in St. Louis, the Rams found two right tackles _ Fred Miller and Ryan Tucker _ in Rounds 5 and 4, respectively. Both had long careers as starters in the league. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was a seventh round compensatory pick.
by jthomas 2:19 PMChristmas in April! The Rams make a moronic trade in an effort to boost ticket sales. Meanwhile, this will guarantee Fisher an extra 2 years to “develop” Goff/Wentz, which only means continued mediocrity for the Rams. For a minute there I was afraid this team might start making smart moves.
by Tackleberry 2:19 PMI guess you can say it’s great that the Rams realize they need a strong starting quarterback, but the trade didn’t make much sense to me.
by jthomas 2:20 PMWho would you take Wentz or Goff?
by Chris 2:20 PMI like Wentz better. He’s bigger yet more athletic than Goff. Has a stronger arm.
by jthomas 2:21 PMJim, how is ESK gonna fulfill his long term dream of building a stadium in Inglewood? He’s 69 years old today and even if it’s completed on time he’ll be 72. At the press conference in Houston when he finally decided to “talk” to the media he looked like death warmed over…white hair, white mustache – all he needed to look like Mark Twain was the white suit.
by DrMizzou 2:21 PMThen again, maybe he’ll live into his 90s.
by jthomas 2:21 PMDo you expect either of Wentz or Goff to start at some point in year 1?
by Tom 2:22 PMYou don’t draft players No. 1 or No. 2 overall to have them sit and watch.
by jthomas 2:23 PM“At this point, does it really matter?”
I’ve tried to ask this question quite a few times, so honestly, I really would like to know what they were thinking.
by David L 2:23 PMYou lie because you don’t want people to know the truth.
by jthomas 2:23 PMIt’s hard for me to say this, but I really do hope the Pats do well this year, and win a SB for Chris Long.
by STLFAN 2:23 PMNot all St. Louisans will go that far _ I think that’s a pretty safe bet _ but it will be nice to see Long playing in a playoff game after all these years.
by jthomas 2:25 PMGiven no QB in this draft seems like a sure franchise QB, I’d say the Rams gave up too much. Do you agree?
by Tom 2:25 PMWe may think differently 5 years from now, but I agree. The Rams gave up too much for one of these QBs. Charley Armey used to say the higher up you are in the draft, the less you should reach for a player. But I this quarterback-driven league, teams still reach for QBs. See Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert, and Christian Ponder.
by jthomas 2:27 PMI hope the Rams draft the next Sam Bradford, often injured and doesnt throw the ball deep.
by Mark S 2:27 PMI’ll go on record and say this now: I don’t think Wentz or Goff will be the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year as was the case with Bradford as a rookie.
by jthomas 2:28 PMI am really starting to get interested in the Titans – with their free agent moves and the trade they seem like a team that will be vastly improved.
by fred 2:28 PMYeah, it will be interesting to see what they do with all those picks. And it’ll be interesting to see how Mariota does in Year 2.
by jthomas 2:29 PMI think it’s very cool that the former Rams want to come back and play flag football at the Dome foe the fans. Just shows the players really did enjoy it here in STL
by STLFAN 2:30 PMYeah, the list is up to 32 (30 players, plus Vermeil and Martz) who have confirmed they plan to attend the game. And I’m told that a lot more former players have expressed interest in returning for the game. Tickets, by the way, go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. on Ticketmaster.
by jthomas 2:32 PMHow are the Rams going to fill out their roster with quality players now? Picking up players that are going to be cut in training camp?
by Trevor 2:32 PMIt won’t be easy. The team doesn’t have a lot of cap room left. There isn’t a lot out there in free agency. Players cut coming out of the preseason usually aren’t starting quality. The Rams obviously need a strong Day 3 of the draft, and they need to find a couple of nuggets via undrafted rookies.
by jthomas 2:34 PMSo does this mean that this is the start of another rebuilding for the Rams? How much time does Snead have before he’s canned? We all know that Fisher has the Supreme Court Justice lifetime contract
by Ray Ray Armstrong 2:34 PMYou know, I’ve been saying this for a couple of years, but you’d think this would be a key year for Fisher and Snead.
by jthomas 2:35 PMWhat do you think the rams could get draft pick wise for Keenum and Foles? Thanks
by Paul 2:35 PMDon’t think Keenum is on the trading block. As for Foles, I’d say seventh, or maybe a conditional sixth based on playing time with new team.
by jthomas 2:36 PMHey Jim, Kev told me he’s making a trade to dazzle LA and sell tickets to the stars, but I didn’t know he was going to give away the farm. I thought my perfect hair would sell tickets but Kev didn’t see it that way. Anywho, do you happen to know where I can get a starting safety, starting left tackle (yea, I kinda screwed up there), a couple of worthy wide receivers, d-line depth, oh and a replacement for the weakside linebacker we over-payed for who will be over-matched? Please only submit names of players who will be around in the 4th-7th rounds.
by Leslie Snead 2:37 PMYou forgot tight end.
by jthomas 2:37 PMAt the road game in Minnesota last season Stan had his body guards prevent ordinary people from entering the restroom while his highness mounted the throne. Who is he kidding? Someone who was born in 1947 in Mora/Cole Camp, MO didn’t even know what indoor plumbing was, let alone how to use it.
by DrMizzou 2:37 PMAnd you’re bringing this up now because. . . . . .
by jthomas 2:38 PMIs Chris Long expected to be a starter in NE? Thanks.
by Tom 2:38 PMI’m sure he’ll be in the mix, but the Patriots seem to have a lot of bodies at the position.
by jthomas 2:38 PMWill the Rams have a QB coach this year to help the new guy along? If so, any guess who it will be?
by Tom 2:39 PMIt’s Chris Weinke, back for his second year with the team as QB coach.
by jthomas 2:40 PMSo, the NBA just approved advertisements on jerseys. Knowing how the NFL loves to find more revenue streams, how long before we see ads on football uniforms?
by Andy 2:40 PMI think it’s only a matter of time.
by jthomas 2:40 PMWhat are the Rams and RB Mason looking at for punishment? Will it be handed down this season?
by bfulton 2:41 PMWe’re still almost 5 months till the start of the regular season. So I’d think we’d have something by them. Hard to predict in terms of Mason punishment. Maybe a game or two if guilty.
by jthomas 2:42 PM[/b]Fantasy football question here: Will any rookie RBs be this year’s Todd Gurley? Do you think any WRs, TEs or QBs who will have break out seasons?
by bfulton 2:42 PMOf course, a lot depends on where they end up. But I think RB Ezekiel Elliott has the chance to be something special. But overall it’s not a great skill year in the draft, be it QB, WR, or TE.
by jthomas 2:44 PMWho will Fisher & Snead take? Goff or Wentz?
by Scott 2:44 PMI have no idea. It is interesting, however, that Mike Silver of NFL Network _ who’s very close to Fisher _ says the team is leaning towards Goff.
by jthomas 2:45 PMHey Jim! Are either one of these quarterbacks good enough to lift the whole team over the 500 mark? Seems to me the holes all over the team are too big. Thanks for the chats Jim.
by Alton Ken 2:45 PMDoesn’t seem likely. At least not as NFL rookies.
by jthomas 2:45 PMDid fisher and Snead say their 4 year plan didn’t work and now is changing the way they draft? If so, I hope he doesn’t get an extension.
by Steve 2:47 PMI don’t known what this move says, but it certainly is out of character for Fisher/Snead.
by jthomas 2:52 PMBill McCllellan, one of your colleagues at the PD described Stan perfectly when he describes the Married Wells and the Born Wells.
by DrMizzou 2:52 PMGod bless Bill.
by jthomas 2:52 PMHave always felt that long term qb success is related as much too mental makeup as physical tools. Have heard both goff and wants have a lot between the ears, as much as any recent rookie qbs. Have you heard that?
by Ron 2:52 PMYeah, I think their Wonderlic tests leaked out, and one was at like 37 and one was at like 41 or 42. Which is very high.
by jthomas 2:53 PMWould you be surprised if fisher drafted jalen Ramsey instead of a qb? Sorry don’t trust this regime. Ex: quick, pead and last year la’el collins.
by Steve 2:53 PMI don’t think we have to worry about that this year.
by jthomas 2:53 PMAlex Smith or Aaron Rodgers? Look at what the wrong decision did to SF. Rams/Snisher history says they’ll make the wrong decision.
by Tom R 2:54 PMBut also look at the fact that Rodgers was able to sit and learn for basically 3 seasons. I think he threw a total of 49 passes over his first three seasons in the league as he watched Favre. I think if you had the patience to sit a guy for say two years, that the guy to take would be Paxton Lynch of Memphis. That’s assuming, of course, he’s getting good coaching over those 2 seasons. I think Lynch may have the most upside of any QB in this draft.
by jthomas 2:57 PMAnd they were able to get away with it? Did they skip kindergarten?
Did Demoff really say that himself? Because that would be a surprising bit of honesty considering everything else that came out of his mouth.
Sorry, still bitter. Only here because I enjoy your chats.
by David L 2:57 PMTrust me, I get your pain. And you’re not alone.
by jthomas 2:58 PMJeff Fisher must have known if he went into LA with Case Keenum as the guy he would have not been resigned.
by Dwayne 2:58 PMI don’t know about all that. But I think Jeff is smart enough to realize that this could be a big year for him.
by jthomas 2:59 PMHey Jim, Jeff Fisher did say it was a 5 year plan when he first got the gig now he gets the QB. Do you think the Roster is set to win 5 years later?
by Dwayne 2:59 PMNot really. Who’s the free safety? Tight end? Are the Rams much better (any better?) at wide receiver than they were four years ago? Do they have a left tackle in Greg Robinson? And depth at defensive tackle and linebacker is lacking. Franchising Trumaine Johson and paying $9 million a year for Mark Barron has prevented them from making outside moves for a couple of starters in free agency.
by jthomas 3:02 PMJim, I’m a little surprised Janoris Jenkins came back to ESPN 101 for a farewell interview but James Laurinitis hasn’t. Strange or Salty?
by Dwayne 3:03 PMThat’s why you should make the Post-Dispatch your first stop. I interviewed Laurinaitis the day he was cut, and also wrote about him after he signed with New Orleans.
by jthomas 3:04 PMAfter reading la papers’ rams coverage, I can see why you have a large la following. Fluff pieces, suck-up articles and stories about how the rams need to satisfy la’s insatiable thirst for “star-power” in order to succeed. Jeezo, I threw up in my mouth reading that drivel. Thank you for always giving it to your readers straight, good or bad … mostly bad.
by Gerald Reynolds 3:04 PMAlways try to be fair but honest.
by jthomas 3:05 PMTrade wasn’t that bad cause of the extra 2nd for Foles and the possible 3rd comp pick for JJ21 you think?
by Dwayne 3:05 PMNo. not when you think about what players you can get with an early 2 and a late 3 next year.
by jthomas 3:06 PMI have to second an earlier poster’s sentiments about Chris Long. I wish the same for James Laurinaitis. What confuses me, Jim, is how organizations such as the Rams can be so consistently bad over so many years? The Cleveland Browns are an object lesson but this is not restricted to the NFL. The problem is not with the team but the organizations themselves. Are these organizations so lacking in self-awareness that they cannot see how badly they stink?
by Roy Earl 3:07 PMYou do wonder about that _ if these teams have any self-awareness of how bad they are. Right now the Rams are right up there with I’d say Cleveland and Oakland as the NFL’s most woebegone franchises. Although I have to say that it looks like Oakland looks like they are making progress. And I think part of the problem with the Rams is absentee ownership. It’s just not the same when the owner isn’t around with some degree of regularity. Maybe Kroenke’s around more now that the Rams are in LA.
by jthomas 3:15 PMStill love reading your chat. Read a lot of Rams hating since the move. To be expected. We in So Cal felt the same way when Georgia did it to us. Still supported the Rams but disliked the owner. Keep the chats going Jim, still have you as one of my favorites on my computer. I check in daily. Thanks.
by Rheim 3:16 PMYeah, a part of this chat has become a weekly venting session. But that’s OK and expected.
by jthomas 3:16 PMJim I think you have over stated some of the “holes” on the Rams roster. The one I want to address is the so called lack of depth in the secondary. Johnson and Gaines starting is a solid combination. Behing him Roberson and Sensabaugh will battle for the nickelback job, a battle I think Roberson wins. Joyner can easily move to FS and play well there as he did at FSU.
by Steve 3:17 PMIt’s more an issue of free safety. We’ll see if the Rams do try moving Joyner back to free safety. But you can never have enough corners, and it was interesting how much interest the Rams were showing in drafting a corner _ at least before trading all the picks to move up to No. 1.
by jthomas 3:18 PMWhich teams incompetence is more likely to ruin the QB that the draft, Cleveland or LA? And should we just assume that the 3rd QB taking in the draft will be the next Tom Brady?
by Mark S 3:19 PMI think you have to go with Cleveland as most incompetent. At least the Rams have come up with recent gems such as Robert Quinn, Aaron Donald, and Todd Gurley.
by jthomas 3:19 PMI’d like to thank Isaac and all the players coming to STL to play in the flag football game for a chance to finish this on OUR terms, with a team that proudly played and won for St. Louis. I wouldn’t miss this for anything!
by TK 3:20 PMI think that’s a good way of looking at it. And maybe for some it will help bring closure to what has been a very painful process.
by jthomas 3:22 PMI personally am ecstatic about the trade, did they pay too much? Maybe. But then I do think drafting Carson Wentz which I do think they will draft, will be a great move. Hopefully in two to three years we will agree that this trade was a win-win for both teams.
by RR 3:24 PMTime will tell.
by jthomas 3:24 PMIf Goff or Wentz turns out to be similar quality to Matt Ryan, for example, do you think that makes this trade a good one? Thanks.
by MarkBlackGold 3:24 PMCertainly.
by jthomas 3:24 PMI’m assuming you’ve been to the HOF in Canton. What is your favorite exhibit there and why?
by Andy 3:26 PMI’ve been to the Hall of Fame several times over the years, most recently for the Marshall Faulk induction, and I’ll be up there for Orlando Pace’s enshrinement this summer. I like everything about the experience and Canton. Just strolling through the Hall, seeing all the busts, is great.
by jthomas 3:27 PMTrue or False: Jeff Fisher gets an extension by the end of 2016
by Dwayne 3:27 PMTBD
by jthomas 3:28 PMI’d like to thank the Rams for allowing me to have my day in Los Angeles. I’m sure any announcement of “The Trade” would have taken all attention away from the close of my Hall of Fame career. Just another of the many ways the Rams have shown they truly do care deeply about their hometown people.
by Kobe Bryant 3:28 PMAnd today’s winner of the sarcasm award goes to. . . .
by jthomas 3:28 PMJim, a few weeks ago I saw NFL commissioner RG in Jacksonville with former Cardinal Pres Mark Lamping and Shad Kahn. He said jacksonville market had not grown as much as NFL would like but it was about passionate fans….Have you seen the video? What hipocracy
Your thoughts?
by stldj1986 3:28 PMI have not seen the video. But yes, the market is too small.
by jthomas 3:29 PMIf you were to be the one picking, would you choose Wentz or Goff? I keep going back and forth. I believe I heard Kurt Warner say he’d choose Goff, because at some point you have to stop saying things like “this guy has so much potential….” You just have to eventually get the guy that can do it.
by MarkBlackGold 3:29 PMI’m leaning Wentz due to size, athleticism, arm strength, personality.
by jthomas 3:30 PMI don’t know why the Broncos are pursuing Kaepernick. Reading comments by pro-scouts, he is either unable to make the correct downfield read or is unwilling to go through his route-progression when looking for a receiver. Strong arm, but not terribly accurate. Am I missing something? Is he a case of a good quarterback in the wrong system?
by Andy 3:30 PMYeah, to a degree, the level of their interest puzzles me as well. It just seems like he has never made the adjustment to being a pocket passer. I’m not saying he’s not worth a look, but I sure wouldn’t give away the farm for him.
by jthomas 3:33 PMJim, As always thanks for all the chats over the years. I for one don’t mind as many Ram questions and articles as possible but that’s just me. Any news on the Donte Witner front? I know he was supposed to be visiting last week but I still haven’t heard anything. Seems to me that the Rams really could use him, especially since they lost McLeod. Your thoughts?
by Ron 3:33 PMHave not heard anything new on him. That could mean the parties are far apart on money. In my mind, I’m not sure if I look at him as a true free safety anyway.
by jthomas 3:34 PMIf you could implement one rule change for next year, what would it be?
by Andy 3:42 PMI’d give each team one possession in OT. (So even if the team with the first OT possession scores a TD, the other team would get one chance.) And I’m going to cheat and give you another one: I’d like to see the game-day roster expanded from 46. Maybe by a couple of players to 48. Why have healthy players sitting?
by jthomas 3:44 PMThe Rams drafted Mannion last year. Apparently he isn’t the QB of the future. What is missing about him that the Rams no longer see, if anything?
by Rheim 3:44 PMDoes make you wonder, doesn’t it? But I figured when the Rams didn’t get a veteran QB via free agency or trade that they would turn their attention to the draft.
by jthomas 3:45 PMIs there still a possibility that Jacksonville will come to STL if the 400 million in public money is made available?
by stdj1986 3:45 PMI can’t see anything like that happening in the near future. I think the only way Khan ever considers StL would be when and if it becomes clear that London is out of play.
by jthomas 3:46 PMHave your media brethren in LA caught on yet to the incompetence of this organization or are they still blinded by the bauble. At what point in time will all of the excitement be replaced by reality?
by jpotts 3:46 PMNormally, I would say it might take a couple of years. But it could be a longer process because of the Inglewood stadium on the horizon.
by jthomas 3:47 PMHi Jim, for what it’s worth, I’d say that whichever qb the Rams take doesn’t have to be great to make the team a lot better, he just has to be a lot better than the qbs the Rams have had recently, which is very reachable
by Jim Hart 3:47 PMTrue. But how many QBs shine as rookies?
by jthomas 3:48 PMIf the organization wants to sell tickets, PSL’s, etc., especially in their new stadium, they will bring back Mike Martz.
by Tom 3:49 PMNot gonna happen.
by jthomas 3:49 PMare my questions coming through?
by stdj1986 3:49 PMI see this one.
by jthomas 3:49 PMI looked up Steve Ortmayer after last week’s chat and found out that he was most recently an assistant coach at Kentucky. What a fall for a guy who used to run an NFL team. SEC school, sure, but not a good one. How did he get hired as a GM in the first place?
by David L 3:49 PMAnd it was a while back when Ortmayer followed Rich Brooks to Kentucky. They had a pretty good run down there, at least by Kentucky standards. As for how Ortmayer got hired in the first place, that’s a good question. I don’t think GMs and head coaches were at the top of John Shaw’s list when he was in the midst of the move to StL.
by jthomas 3:51 PMI thought that it was nice that Janoris Jenkins was in St. Louis last week and signed some autographs for the kids before heading to NY. Classy.
by Fan STL 3:51 PMYeah, I might have attended the event just to check in with Janoris, but was out of town over the weekend.
by jthomas 3:52 PMOdds on Orlando Pace getting a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame? Also, over/under on number of years STL gets another NFL team?
by David L 3:52 PMJust wondering are any of the other Hall of Famers from St. Louis pro teams on the Walk of Fame? And it should help that he’s settled down in St. Louis. Over/under on another NFL team here _ 25.years.
by jthomas 3:54 PMWill you be doing a mock draft for the post-dispatch? And if so, who do you see the Redskins taking at 21? Thanks.
by JT 3:54 PMWe’ve had two mock drafts already. Here’s the link to the first: http://www.stltoday.com And here’s the link to the second: http://www.stltoday.com We will have our third and final mock in this Sunday’s Post-Dispatch. My picks for Washington were Ole Miss DT Robert Nkemdiche in Mock 1.0 and Baylor WR Corey Coleman in Mock 2.0.
by jthomas 4:00 PMAny chance the Rams screw up this pick too and pick up a DT? Maybe an O-lineman?
by Trevor 4:00 PMWishful thinking.
by jthomas 4:00 PMWhich team will you be most interested in this year?
by Bigtuna 4:00 PMIf I had to guess, I’d say I’ll probably cover more KC Chiefs games than anyone. But given this is their first year in LA, I’m sure I’ll keep an eye on the Rams as well.
by jthomas 4:01 PMAny update as to whether SC will have to pay for balance on the Dome at the Americas center?
by stldj1986 4:01 PMI’m blanking out here. Who is SC.
by jthomas 4:01 PMGod, I’m glad they’re gone. Fisher and Sneed are absolutely the best pair for their inept owner. Not only do I save a couple of thousand every football season but now I get to sit back and laugh at the Rams organization along with the rest of the country. The NFL is no longer a passion, much less a concern, with me. Hope all those left behind by ESK and crew do well and get on their feet okay.
by TJH 4:02 PMAnd what if the Rams are good and figure it out. Even the Bidwill’s finally did that in Arizona. Then how will you feel?
by jthomas 4:03 PMJT, one of the things lost in the Rams move to LA versus Chargers & Raiders is that StanK didn’t want to be in STL. The other two owners actually wanted to stay in their home market.
by Jagman 4:03 PMYou are absolutely correct.
by jthomas 4:03 PMSuppose the Rams were playing the Titans this season. What would happen?
by Tom 4:03 PMMularkey sends out every Titans player selected with draft picks from St. Louis for the coin toss. I think it’s a very close game. And hopefully, if the Rams lose this time, William Hayes doesn’t smash a mirror with his forearm.
by jthomas 4:05 PMWhen Lance Kendrick was drafted, was it thought he’d be a better receiving TE than he has turned out to be? I remember being disappointed at that time that we took a TE that high in the draft.
by MarkBlackGold 4:05 PMI thought the Rams over-drafted Lance Kendricks at the time. I think he still would’ve been available in Round 3. He’s turned out to be a good all-around tight end. Maybe without Jared Cook around, he’ll get the ball more this year.
by jthomas 4:06 PMReggie Nelson update? Did he sign with anyone yet? What did you hear about his visit?
by Jeff 4:08 PMNelson ended up signing with Oakland. Fairly modest terms per @benvolin of the Boston Globe: 2 years, $8.5 million with an additional $3.5 million possible in incentives. Never heard anything about visit.
by jthomas 4:10 PMNow that we know we are getting a rookie QB, what position is the most NEED for the Rams to address?
by Jeff 4:10 PMWide receiver.
by jthomas 4:10 PMIf this team selects the correct QB, who turns out to be an above average starter. ex: Joe Flacco, where are they in the next few years? Super Bowl? Championship game?
by Len 4:10 PMIn the playoffs.
by jthomas 4:10 PMHave you made your travel plans to LA for the Draft Day party?
by Jeff 4:10 PMI’ll be attending the draft in Chicago this year. Let us know how things go in LA.
by jthomas 4:11 PMI know you are leaning towards Wentz, but what do you think the Rams will do?
by Jeff 4:11 PMNo idea.
by jthomas 4:11 PMAre there any other teams inquiring to the Rams about the 1st pick now that they have it? If so, do you think that they would trade it?
by Jeff 4:11 PMI think all the action is at No. 2 with the Browns.
by jthomas 4:11 PMNow that you mention it – it is interesting that the Rams ere looking atcorners before the trade…..More and more it looks like Jeff may have been read the riot act and told that the Rams needed a splash in the draft for their first season back in LA.
by frd 4:12 PMI’m not big on the Oliver Stone theories. And I don’t know about any riot acts. But this doesn’t seem like a Fisher move.
by jthomas 4:13 PMI’m betting Jenkins makes the ProBowl this year, now that he’s in NY. What do you think?
by Tom 4:13 PMNo.
by jthomas 4:13 PMDoes SJ39 have a job with the Pats? He made some plays for them in the playoffs as I recall. Love to see him and CL have some success, even if it is with the Pats. Whenever the Rams play the Pats it is going to be strange to root for Belicheck. But gotta do what you gotta do.
by Fan of STL Rams 4:15 PMSJ39 is currently not under contract. But Danny Amendola is still with the Pats.
by jthomas 4:16 PMwell heck now i am really depressed under 25 years, reality just set in, it may not happen in my life time, that really stinks
by BH 4:16 PMHey, I’ve been wrong before.
by jthomas 4:17 PMWould you go over/under on that 25 years mentioned below. We all just want to hope…..
by Kyle 4:17 PMI’d have to say over. . . .
by jthomas 4:17 PMThis trade has demoff written all over it. As you mentioned a few weeks back, kevvy has never had more juice in the organization.
by Andy 4:18 PMAgreed.
by jthomas 4:18 PMPlease remind your readers, its never too late to get stan out of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Go to their site, send them an email. He is in there solely for bringing the Rams to St. Louis
by JK 4:18 PMJK, so glad you brought this up. I’m trying to get a sense of how many fans have contacted the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame on this matter. Please send me an e-mail to jthomas@post-dispatch.com with your thoughts if you’re one of them.
by jthomas 4:20 PMWhere do you fall in the LBGT bathroom issue?
by Nick 4:20 PMI grew up in a one-bathroom home.
by jthomas 4:20 PMI’m pretty sure everyone who followed this even remotely was aware kroenke wanted to leave and Davis/Spanos wanted to stay in their towns. But HE moved the rams to STL and was rewarded for failing … that’s what is lost!
by Kat 4:20 PMSo what you’re saying then, is that Stan Kroenke falls well short of being a “first-tier” owner?
by jthomas 4:21 PMCan you think of another organization where the COO is orchestrating trades over the wishes of the head coach and GM?
by Jeramy 4:22 PMProbably happens more than you think.
by jthomas 4:22 PMJT – So whether the Rams take Wentz or Goff (I’m hoping Fisher isn’t targeting a DE or DT with the #1 pick) do you think their best chance for success is to make a splash trade for a big name (or at least solid) vet WR (what they would trade I have no clue but let’s pretend it was possible), look for a vet FA or do you think there are some 4th-7th round gems at WR or TE that will give the new QB a legit target?
by Ram_Malavasi 4:22 PMI think it might be easier to find a TE on Day 3 than a wide receiver, although it’s been done before. Yeah, I don’t know what they would trade to get a vet WR.
by jthomas 4:25 PMJim, why do we assume the Rams will draft Goff or Wentz #1? These guys drafted Brian Quick to open up round 2 a few years back. They had to prove they’re the smartest in the room. I think they do it again, trading up to number 1 to draft…Vernon Adams?
by bh 4:25 PMNot even the Rams would do something that crazy.
by jthomas 4:26 PMHello Jim,
I was thinking the Rams draft Wentz, start Keenum this year and prepare him for next year. Just like Gurley, the Rams drafted a franchise QB to groom. Your thoughts?
by Ram Star Pat 4:26 PMIt would be a first _ in the history of the draft _ for a No. 1 overall pick to sit out an entire year. Can’t see it.
by jthomas 4:27 PMCould Lynch be ready to start in his second year?
by Tom 4:27 PMPossibly. Judging from his combine workout, it just looked like he had a lot of work to do on his footwork.
by jthomas 4:28 PMThe FAA restrictions around Inglewood are still not resolved. What happened to all the certainty that Goodell said was so important just a short time ago?
by DrMizzou 4:28 PMThat’s interesting. But we all know the league REALLY wanted to be in LA. With three years looming in the Coliseum, I guess they have a few years left to figure it out.
by jthomas 4:30 PMI’ve always been curious about the players with the GREAT TALENT who never quite lived up to their abilities. What was it that prevented them from truly succeeding? Jeff George is a name that comes to mind. Any insights into what prevented players like him from becoming the superstar everyone expected them to be?
by Andy 4:30 PMI can’t speak specifically for George. Some times it’s temperament. Some times it’s work ethic. Some times, there are off-field problems involved. And some times the scouting department/front office goofed in its evaluation.
by jthomas 4:32 PMAny update on the task force trying to get their $16 million back?
by David L 4:32 PMHaven’t heard that that’s happening.
by jthomas 4:32 PMTo Andy, I would say what keeps great talent falling shorts of great results are immaturity
by Jagman 4:33 PMThat’s part of it as wll.
by jthomas 4:33 PMJT, the trade of 2 #2 picks and 2 #3 picks isn’t all that much considering that the Rams track record, especially for #2s, is so bad (Quick, Pead, etc.) With all of the moving details, ithink the front office got distracted in putting a roster together. Hpe it works out for them. here in DC, they are still recovering from RG III trade.
by Jagman 4:34 PMI do think there was a distraction factor at work in all this.
by jthomas 4:35 PMApril 20, 2016 at 4:06 pm #42309Isiah58ParticipantMy Prediction? Those pundits, including JT, who are calling the Rams’ trade “desperate” will be saying the move was a “no brainer” three years from now.

Not me. Take the Austin trade, I still don’t like those kinds of moves. I like Austin, but I will condemn the move forever. If it works out, the Rams got lucky. They drew and against the odds, they got lucky. imo
April 20, 2016 at 8:04 pm #42326HramParticipantI hated it when they did it and I still don’t like the Austin trade.
This trade I’m coming around to thinking may work out. They are young and talented, but need average or better QB play to actually be good. They should be able to get that at #1, if not this year by two or three years when the QB is experienced.
Add in the salary cap savings to maintain our best and get another piece or two over the next two years and, well, provided the QB doesn’t flop, we will be in a better place.
I’m almost always a stay where you are or trade down guy, but the team (although I would like them to add one really good receiver) is ready including a young oline.
In this one instance, I think the trade up was the right play.
April 20, 2016 at 8:34 pm #42328InvaderRamModeratoralso, they’ll have potentially one of the best young backfields in the game. gurley and goff/wentz. that’s huge.
