I was just talking to someone about this. Too early in the week for a prediction. But I think it has the potential to be a close game. Eagles o-line is beat up although Lane Johnson returns this week. Nick Foles is banged up. Philly giving up a lot of rushing yards _ a lot of yards period _ on defense.

Yeah, it was some crazy story. I was glad to finally be able to get to the bottom of it. He seems healthy and strong. After some bumps in the first two games, he played pretty well _ as did the entire offensive line _ vs. Dallas. (With the notable exception of the botched snap.)

Hi Jim, Thanks as always for these chats. I’m a Rams fan in L.A. and these chats and your insights are the best way to stay on top of the team. My questions is concerning the underachieving of our draft picks. It seems that we hear a lot of “He is have trouble picking up the playbook” or “The speed of the game is more than he expected” Whenever I hear that I know it will be a long time (if ever) before that player becomes effective. Do you think we miss on more of these players than other teams in the league? How much responsibility does the coaching staff have on this? Is this one of the reasons you preferred the Rams take J. Matthews over G. Robinson?

It certainly takes some players longer than others. But it certainly like the light has come on for Brian Quick, for example. I really can’t tell you if the Rams have missed on more of these players than others. I think by the end of this season, it’ll be fair to pass at least some judgment on the draft class of 2012. But factoring in how quickly a player can fit into your scheme certainly should be part of the evaluation process pre-draft. It is surprising that Robinson as the No. 2 overall isn’t ready to play. And yes, that is one of the reasons why I liked Jake Matthews.

Stan Kroenke is not a seller. He’s not selling the team. I don’t know where you heard this rumor. But I wouldn’t hold your breath on that one.

He doesn’t. What Joseph does have, however, is eight years of NFL experience, and right now Fisher is going with a more experienced line.

Davis is feisty, and has put up some good numbers. But both in preseason and in the regular season he has come up short on deep passes. I also am unsure if he can throw the deep out. Does he have the arm strength to be an NFL starter?

He has enough arm to get it done deep. And he’s been pretty effective throwing the deep ball so far this season.

In the category of “super early speculation,” does Austin Davis have a profile that, if he performs well this year, could make the Rams confident in not going for a guy like Mariota, or is he just a short-term fill-in and they’re likely to get a new starting QB next year through FA/draft regardless of Davis’ performance?

Hi Jim, any concerns that Bradford’s physical makeup, specifically the ligaments, are not strong enough to hold up to the rigors of the NFL play. Seems like both ACL injuries did not result from a high amount of physical contact.

The Carolina injury was more a case of getting foot caught in the turf while being shoved to turf on a scramble. A shove that didn’t have to be made. I agree that the Cleveland injury was funny looking. Some players are just injury prone. It doesn’t mean they’re not physically or mentally tough, sometimes it just happens that way.

Davis has played very very well in his 2 starts. Does that say anything about his caliber or is it just that teams still have to come up with game plans for him which would mean we are in for more embarrassments?

I’m sure teams are trying to get a book on Davis, and it usually takes several games to do so. Dallas for example had some success blitzing him. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see Philly blitz him Sunday, or try to disguise their looks in the secondary.

Jim, to follow up on the Davin Joseph as a guard, I have heard that on the offensive unit that Davin Joseph consistently grades out as the worst performer. In addition, we seem to have strayed from the heavy on the run concept that we changed to last year. Last, the #2 pick in the draft is not on the OL. Seems like this organization/coaching staff has missed something here.

Like the rest of the line, Joseph played better vs. Dallas. I think what you might be referring to on grades is from Pro Football Focus, which does some good things but I really don’t put much stock in their grades. Saying that, if I had to rank the OL starters the first two games, I would’ve ranked Joseph fifth among the starters.

Odds that davis starts? Philly has a terrible defense, and their corners are very suspect, i could see davis/hill have a pretty good game along with the recievers, now if our d can hold and pressure their week line this game may just be winnable. Maybe…possibly…..well probably not……

Is it normal for coaches to spend so much time complaining/contesting penalties. The Rams seem like very undisciplined and more interested in running their mouths than playing football, yet Fisher comes out every Monday for 3 years and says “It’s not us, it’s them.” I guess you arrive at this nadir by not taking responsibility for anything though. If the Rams aren’t getting a fair shake, it might be because they have drawn the target on their backs themselves.

I don’t think Fisher spends that much time complaining about penalties. He was just responding to a series of questions after the Dallas game. And Fisher has said on numerous occasions that he has agreed with a call or calls that went against the Rams. I do agree with your last point however, that maybe the reputation that Fisher’s teams have had w/regards to penalties hurts them.

Not that it is an excuse, but wasn’t the officiating crew at the Rams game with Dallas (McAulay) the same one that made that horrible call in the Green Bay/Chicago game on the hands to the face call on Peppers? How can this crew still be in the league with 2 weeks like that? The Rams/Dallas game was one of the worst officiated games I have ever seen and the GB/Bears game was just as bad.

No, the crew that worked the Dallas game was headed by Clete Blakeman. I did watch a lot of the Packers-Bears game over the weekend and there were some very bad calls _ I thought _ in that game.

Ed, it is painful to watch you officiate any game, no matter which teams are playing. Too many calls. Too many long conferences. Too many windy explanations. The fans aren’t investing time (and if they’re at the stadium _ dollars) to watch you. In a game where you have a pick six, a botched snap, and give up big plays on defense you can’t really say the refs were the reason the team lost. But if a couple of calls go the other way, the Rams may have very well won.

Hey Jim. Not a huge Mike Tomlin guy but noticed his post game comments about the Steelers being heavily penalized last week and for the season. He called his team “sloppy” and used the term “unacceptable” when describing his team and coaching. Now I know Fisher states he’s not happy with the penalties and mistakes but I’ve also noticed over the past few years he rarely calls anyone out or makes blunt remarks like his team is just plan sloppy or bad at this or that. Maybe I’m missing something but do you think Fisher is too laid back with his players or does he actually call guys out or his whole team or coaching staff and I haven’t seen it?

Fisher’s usually pretty direct. He mentioned several players that didn’t carry out assignments properly in the Dallas game, including Rodger Saffold, Janoris Jenkins, Lamarcus Joyner, Rodney McLeod, and E.J. Gaines. But he doesn’t do it in a way that’s demeaning.

How had Joyner been so far? I was expecting a little more even though it’s only been 3 games. He was such a fiery vocal player at florida state and hasn’t really flashed much yet. Is he looking worthy of a 2nd round pick or did the Rams reach for a undersized college type guy….like Tavon Austin.

I don’t know if I can give you an answer any “straight-er” than I have been giving for weeks. Robinson is struggling with the techniques and with his grasp of pass protection schemes. Fisher has said he prefers to go with experience on the line at this point. Obviously a lot of rookies are starting right now across the league. But it is puzzling to have a No. 2 overall pick not playing, and with each passing week it becomes more puzzling.

For one, I think the receivers are playing much better this season. Very few drops. For another, we’re talking 2 starts. Not a huge body of work. But make no mistake, Davis looks very accurate.

When comparing Davis to Bradford you have to remember that Davis seems he really enjoys playing football. I think that rubs off. The Davis-Cook thing would have never happened with Bradford b/c Bradford would have just went back to the bench and stared into space.

Blown coverage. Jenkins got turned around on a double move. McLeod did bite on the underneath route (run by Terrance Williams), leaving no safety help after Jenkins got beaten. And it was Gaines who let Williams run free.

I recall listening to Robinson after the draft and he appeared, (how is the best way to put it???) extremely unintelligent. Have you seen any of B. Jones practicing (at any point after being drafted)? How does he look? Any realistic reason to think he’s got the talent to be a quality starter, or is he just so injured and rusty at this point that you see him being more likely to fizzle out?

He has yet to practice since the back surgery. I think the Rams still feel he has starters potential. As for this season, he’ll have a fair amount of rust to knock off before he’s game ready.

Why stop there. They play the 49ers, Cardinals, Broncos, Chargers the first 4 Sundays in November. Can the Rams win even 3 of those 8 games? Even if they do, that puts them at 4-7 with five games to play. To be the best, you have to beat the best. When do the Rams start doing that with any kind of consistency?

Don’t understand why naming a starter is such a big deal. Is a coronation, is pomp and circumstance needed every time a QB gets a starting assignment? Maybe it’s simply a matter that Fisher isn’t totally sure yet on Davis. As good as Davis has played, he really hasn’t played a top-flight defense. Hypothetically, what if Davis plays well enough against Philly’s 26th-rated defense, is named the starter, then stumbles badly against San Fran and Seattle. Does Fisher then name HIll the starter? Do we then start a yo-yo effect of naming someone new the starter after each bad performance.

This question may sound ridiculous but compare Austin Davis first to starts this year to Warner’s first to in 99.

Interesting question. Warner completed 45 of 69 passes for 591 yards, 6 TDs and 2 INTs in his first two starts in ’99. Davis has completed 52 of 71 passes for 562 yards, 3 TDs and 2 INTs in his first two starts. Pretty similar stats except for the TD pass total (and the fact that the Rams won both of Warner’s starts.)

The LB play is horrible.. they have talent, they seem to take themselves out of plays.. can we expect any better from these guys?? Barr from Minn made a game changing sack.. lined up 4 yards deep, held his ground and waited .. he had running back … running back blocked de .. he came charging in for sack once his man gave himself up.. 1.) Be more effective containing the edge; 2.) Cut down on penalties; 3.) Minimize overall mistakes in alignment, coverage _ in other words _ no “free” big plays. 4.) Come up with some turnovers; 5.) cut down on 3-man fronts. 5.) Fewer missed tackles.

And you could throw in. . .”and Tampa Bay won in Pittsburgh.” But the NFL is truly a week-to-week deal. Often what happens one week has no relation to what happens the next. The Rams should’ve beaten Dallas by 10 points. And they should’ve played much better against Minnesota.. That’s all there is to it.

OK, a little joke there Lane. Yes, the drop was huge. But cook has played pretty well so far. If not for that offensive P.I. against Quick I think, Cook has 8 catches for 105 yards against Dallas.

We were original PSL holders in 1995 _ my wife, my brother, and my two oldest boys, that is. (I’m in the press box, of course.) But we dropped the PSLs maybe 10 years ago after boys got busy with hs games, now they’re both out of college and don’t live in STL any more. But they still follow the team. US Army Capt. Thomas (my oldest) still wears his Isaac Bruce jersey from time to time. My wife still watches the games on TV.
