Rams inform leading tackler Ernest Jones that they could trade him: Source
By Jourdan Rodrigue
The Los Angeles Rams informed starting inside linebacker and team captain Ernest Jones that they are open to trading him, a league source said.
Jones has started 33 of 47 career games since he was drafted in the third round in 2021. He has recorded 320 tackles and 5 1/2 sacks during that span.
This spring, the Rams halted extension talks with Jones’ camp. General manager Les Snead said the team opted to let Jones play out the final year of his rookie deal.
Jones has been a vocal leader for the team since his rookie season, during which he started for the Rams in their Super Bowl win.
Potentially motivating the Rams’ willingness to trade Jones is the emergence during training camp of undrafted free agent Omar Speights, who Snead said Saturday will make the team and even be on the game day roster. If the Rams have indeed decided they are not going to pay Jones, then trying to get Speights on the field quickly might be a priority.
This situation remains fluid, however, with more updates to come.

Michael Baca
Ernest Jones IV might soon be taking his tackling talents elsewhere by the start of the 2024 season.
The Los Angeles Rams have had conversations about trading the fourth-year linebacker and have given Jones’ agents permission to help find a landing spot, NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported Sunday, per a source.
Wolfe reports that stalled contract talks between the Rams and Jones, who’s entering the final year of his rookie contract, led to Sunday’s development.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler first reported the news.
Jones’ potential exit would shake things up for the Rams defense as the 2024 season approaches. The 24-year-old serves as the defensive signal-caller and is coming off his best statistical season in that role, producing a team-high 145 tackles while also notching a career-high 4.5 sacks in 2023.
Christian Rozeboom, Troy Reeder, Jake Hummel, Olakunle Fatukasi and undrafted rookies Omar Speights and Elias Neal currently round out the Rams’ inside linebacking depth chart. Teams are required to trim rosters down to 53 by Tuesday, Aug. 27.
Jones, a third-round pick in 2021, carved out a sizeable role in L.A. as early as his rookie season. He earned his starting role midway through the 2021 season and started in Super Bowl LVI, helping the Rams top the Bengals with seven tackles, one sack and three QB hits to win the franchise’s second Lombardi Trophy.
The Rams concluded the preseason with a 17-15 loss in Houston on Saturday night.

ESPN

The Los Angeles Rams have granted linebacker Ernest Jones IV and his agents permission to seek a trade, sources told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Sunday.
The permission comes after the Rams and Jones unsuccessfully discussed an extension as the linebacker enters the final year of his contract.
Jones acknowledged he was looking for a new deal last month.
“I know that the work that I’ve put in these past three years, I know I’m worthy of something regardless what the worth may be,” Jones said, according to The Orange County Register. “… I love to be in L.A. I really want to be here. This is truly where I want to keep my family at, grow my family here. But I also know that there’s a business side of it too that I can’t truly control. We’ll see.”
A trade would overhaul the Rams’ defensive setup, as Jones serves at the defensive playcaller. General manager Les Snead has referred to Jones as the “leader of the defense” and then-Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris called it Jones’ defense near the end of the 2023 season.
Jones had 145 tackles and 4.5 sacks last year, both career highs.
The 24-year-old has totaled 320 tackles, 5.5 sacks and three interceptions in his three-year career. A 2021 third-round pick, he was part of the Rams’ Super Bowl-winning team in his rookie season.
August 25, 2024 at 10:54 am #151835znModeratorApparently it stands this way: Jones wants an early extension, the Rams aren’t willing to do that. The logic being I suppose that you can only extend so many guys, and the Rams…to date…have tended not to extend ILBs and safeties.

That’s what it looks like.
But, of course, they used to have Aaron Donald in the middle which meant dominant ILBs was not a need. Even so, it seems sound strategy to me – given the rules favoring the passing game – that the defensive priorities would be LOS/Edge, and versatile coverage guys. I like Jones, but he may be a luxury after his rookie deal is over.

Yeah I don;t know how I feel about it. On the one hand, as you say it makes sense. On the other hand, if this Ram administration regularly screws anything up, it’s extensions. I like Jones. Is it a case where the stone cold hard line should prevail? Or is it worth it to keep Jones? Either way, Jones is good but at the same time he’s not London Fletcher.

There’s a difference though in how Reynolds and Speights got that name.
Reynolds sawed a jeep in half to express his frustration at a loss.
Speights cut a cell phone in half. Of the 2 it was seen as the greater, more symbolically distinguished sacrifice.
August 25, 2024 at 3:16 pm #151843wvParticipantSigh. To lose Donald and Ernest Jones. I dunno.
Could be a good year, barring injury. Maybe even challenge for the division. But this does not seem like a Super Bowl year, does it.

Well to me the simple answer is…we don’t know yet.
I don’t know how deep it goes or how real it is yet, but although I liked Morris, what I saw this preseason was an especially well-coached defense that played fast because it was very keyed in on what it was doing. And that was just the 2s.
I think the secret ingredient this year is Shula. Or, rather, what Shula can do coaching up a young front 7 plus a veteran secondary.
That’s a hunch of course. I have nothing to base it on. Or, just shadowy indications, nothing more.

Worst case scenario, they have him this year. And he will have to play his ass off.

If so, the Rams would be willing to deal him for the right compensation.

so which is it? are the rams actively trying to trade him or is jones’ camp seeking a trade. or we just don’t know at this point?

According to Rodrigue, letting him know he can seek a trade is their response to Jones wanting an extension. That is, Jones is able to do that if he wants to, which is not the same as the Rams deciding that they will trade him and so as a team are actively seeking trade partners.
BTW Jones deleted the post saying he didn’t ask to be traded.

i saw that it was deleted. redditverse is speculating the agent demanded a trade without jones’ knowledge. i would hate to see him go. i know his position isn’t as valuable but i like him. i think he contributes in a lot of different ways. i’m no expert so i leave it to the rams to figure out what’s best.

Jourdan Rodrigue
LOS ANGELES — Starting inside linebacker Ernest Jones was not present at Monday’s practice, a day after the Los Angeles Rams alerted him to the possibility that he could be traded.
McVay did not say whether he believed Jones would return to the team, only that the Rams are “working through some different things.”
McVay, addressing an ESPN report from Sunday morning that the Rams had given Jones “permission to seek a trade” (thus implying it had been requested), said specifically that Jones did not ask the Rams to move him.
“We never said that he requested a trade,” McVay added, “we’ve had communication with his representation.”
As The Athletic reported Sunday, the Rams let Jones know that he could be traded as they had conversations on the matter with other teams. Jones, a team captain and starter, was expected to play on the final year of his rookie contract after general manager Les Snead said in the spring that the Rams did not intend to extend him. McVay said Jones has handled the situation like a “pro.”
“These are parts of the profession,” he said, “they are not fun parts but they are real parts that you have to acknowledge. Ernest is a pro in every sense of the word. We’re just kind of dealing with it a day at a time.”
Potentially motivating the Rams’ openness to move Jones is the emergence of rookie Omar Speights, who Snead said will make their game day roster — in tandem with the reality that Jones will not receive an extension in Los Angeles.

August 27, 2024 at 3:12 pm #151893ZooeyModeratorRams trading LB Ernest Jones to Titans: Sources
By The Athletic Staff
17m agoBy Dianna Russini, Jourdan Rodrigue and Joe Rexrode
The Los Angeles Rams are trading inside linebacker Ernest Jones to the Tennessee Titans in one of the most notable transactions leading up to the league’s training camp cutdown deadline Tuesday, according to team and league sources. The Titans will also receive a 2026 sixth-round pick from Los Angeles, while the Rams will receive a 2026 fifth-rounder, per a team source.
News of a possible trade of Jones, a Rams team captain, began Sunday when the Rams alerted the linebacker they were open to trading him, per a team source. Jones has started since his rookie year, but now enters his fourth season without a contract extension after the Rams halted talks in the spring.
Jones posted via X that he never requested a trade Sunday, but deleted the post. Rams coach Sean McVay confirmed Monday that Jones didn’t ask for a trade and added, “We’ve had communication with his representation.” McVay said Jones has handled the situation like a “pro.”
“These are parts of the profession,” McVay said, “they are not fun parts but they are real parts that you have to acknowledge. Ernest is a pro in every sense of the word. We’re just kind of dealing with it a day at a time.”
Jones is coming off a 2023 season where he picked up 145 total tackles and 4 1/2 sacks. Potentially motivating the Rams’ openness to move Jones is the emergence of rookie Omar Speights, who Snead said will make their game-day roster — in tandem with the reality that Jones will not receive an extension in Los Angeles.
Why Rams moved on from Jones
Let’s not sugarcoat the multiple truths here. One, the Rams had already made it clear in the spring that they would not be getting an early extension done for Jones. Sometimes they have waited until training camp for these, but when it became clear they were committed to letting Jones play out his fourth season teams began sniffing around to see if he would be available. GM Les Snead has a saying: “If it is inevitable, make it immediate.”.
Two, Jones missed some practice time in the spring due to a knee issue but was back in camp. Yet the time he did miss, plus the Rams’ four joint practices, allowed the coaches to get a long look at Speights, a rookie UDFA, who will make their game-day roster. The Rams do not invest financially in their ILB position so the emergence of a young player on a full-tenure rookie deal became an asset. Still, the Rams will miss Jones’ leadership (he was a team captain) and his ability as a blitzer. Both qualities, by the way, make him a good fit with Titans DC Dennard Wilson. — Jourdan Rodrigue, senior Rams writer
Injuries necessitated linebacker upgrade
Jones should be in position to start for the Titans — perhaps right away — though Jack Gibbens shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand. Gibbens and offseason signing Kenneth Murray have been running with the ones together, and Gibbens had a decent camp. But Jones and Murray would be an intriguing and potentially impactful combination. Two young contenders are out of the picture now. Fourth-round pick Cedric Gray is out indefinitely with a nerve-related shoulder injury, and Chance Campbell — whose play in camp pushed him up the depth chart and perhaps in a position to challenge Gibbens — tore his ACL on Sunday at New Orleans and is out for the season. At the very least, Jones gives the Titans a third reliable presence at the position. — Joe Rexrode, senior staff writer

Worst case scenario, they trade Jones and a 6th rounder to get the 145th pick in the draft.

it makes no sense to me. unless jones was just so unhappy he wanted the trade.
or. speights really impressed them that much. but it doesn’t look like he’s even a starter. i’d rather have kept him than swap fifth and sixth round picks.
August 27, 2024 at 7:40 pm #151905Billy_TParticipantAm I just colored by bias, or do the Rams give away valuable assets for pocket change?
It’s not bias, IMO. I think McSnead have a tendency to take too little for Rams in trade, and pay too much for other teams’ wares, including draft picks.
Jones is a solid starting linebacker, who played very well for the Rams. Chosen in the 3rd round, he at least played up to that slot and is still young. He’s easily worth more than a pick swap, late-rounder. I’d say at least a 3rd on its own. At least.
August 27, 2024 at 7:42 pm #151906Billy_TParticipantBizarre trade. I just don’t understand the Rams sometimes. Other teams must love it when they get McSnead on the phone, talking trade. They know they’re going to get a steal.
Oh, well.
August 27, 2024 at 7:54 pm #151907InvaderRamModeratorif jones played out the year and left as a free agent, how much would the compensatory pick be?
