C John Sullivan Visits LA Rams

Could Sully be the fill-in for the Rams’ hole at center?
by Sosa Kremenjas@SosaNFLDraft Mar 20, 2017, 9:04pm CDTFormer long-time Minnesota Vikings and Washington center John Sullivan visited the Los Angeles Rams on Monday, per Alden Gonzalez of ESPN:
Alden Gonzalez @Alden_Gonzalez
The Rams, still in need of a starting center, brought John Sullivan in for a visit on Monday. More on him here … http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=21-0635655304842845987-4 …Sullivan spent the 2016 season with the Washington Redskins, which means he is a familiar face for Sean McVay. Sullivan was extremely healthy and reliable in Minnesota as he spent 7 seasons there and almost every year started 16 games. His 2015 season was injury riddled, and ultimately the Vikings decided to move on. Sullivan then latched on in Washington last season and made an appearance in 13 games.
The addition of John Sullivan would likely only spell as a short term fix as he’s 31 years old, but for a guy with experience in McVay’s scheme, and more help for the Rams line, it can only be a good thing.

The Rams, still in need of a starting center, brought John Sullivan in for a visit on Monday. Sullivan was one of the more under-appreciated centers while starting 93 of 96 games for the Vikings from 2009-14. Missed all of 2015 with an injury, got released and was a backup with Washington last year, where Sean McVay was offensive coordinator.

The Rams’ effort to pry a center away from the Bills via RFA offer sheet did not work after Buffalo matched Los Angeles’ Ryan Groy offer. But the team continues to look for available snappers. The Rams brought in John Sullivan on a visit today, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports.
Sullivan played under new Rams HC Sean McVay last season in Washington after signing in late September. The former longtime Vikings starter, though, served as a Redskins backup to Spencer Long. Now 31, Sullivan started just one game with the Redskins after being the Vikes’ starter from 2009-15.
However, Sullivan saw a back injury alter his career. Signed to a Vikings extension in April of 2015, Sullivan underwent a lumbar microdiscectomy procedure that September and then suffered a setback in his recovery, missing the entire ’15 season. The Vikings placed Sullivan on the trade block last year before cutting him and going with the older Joe Berger at center. Sullivan started 93 of 96 Vikings games from 2009-14, with the 2012 season obviously serving as one of the best rushing slates in NFL history once Adrian Peterson finished with 2,097 yards.
Sullivan has not been connected to any teams as a UFA in 2017 prior to this Rams visit. The Rams have only Demetrius Rhaney as a pure center on their roster presently. The Rams cut 2015-16 starter Tim Barnes earlier this month.

But he did play some last year.
He had 165 total snaps in 2016, including 98 on offense and 67 on special teams.

if he’s healthy, could be a decent signing.

But can you that is his back? The Center position has to snap the ball, and block. I believe Sullivan would be a bad signing. I would rather draft Center early. Say out first pick, which is the 2nd round. My pick, Pat Elflein of Ohio State.

As I said Sullivan played 165 snaps last year including one start subbing for an injury.
I assume that the Rams know about backs and centers and injuries…they already touched that base and accounted for it.
March 21, 2017 at 2:28 pm #66537snowmanParticipantI posted about Sullivan in another thread. He has essentially had two years off, recovering from surgery and being used sparingly in Washington. He started 93 consecutive games for the Vikings from 2008-2014, succeeding All-Pro Matt Birk. Sullivan would be a quality short-term center for us. I hope he signs; he played for a paltry $885,000 last year.
March 21, 2017 at 5:57 pm #66543sanbaggerParticipantI liked the idea of Groy, I’m not sold on this one. If they are gonna go older and very short term, why not kick the tires on Mangold?
Then of course they are gonna have to draft the center of the future…Elfein and Pocic top the lists and one could MTL be had in the 3rd.
March 21, 2017 at 7:49 pm #66547wvParticipantWell obviously this was not their first choice 🙂
Maybe take a center in the third round. Or trade up into the second round
or somethin like that. They gotta be stronger up the middle. Goff has to feel safe.w

they also must not think much of rhaney at all.
March 26, 2017 at 7:22 pm #66713Eternal RamnationParticipantSully is pretty darn good the Vikes line fell apart without him he was missed. A year off and a year of light duty he could be a significant upgrade and it won’t take long to find out.
