Now official: 49ers have informed Adam Gase they’re going in a different direction. Jim Tomsula will be 49ers new HC.

Tomsula was hired as the defensive line coach of the San Francisco 49ers on January 16, 2007. He was named the 49ers’ interim head coach on December 27, 2010, following the firing of former head coach Mike Singletary. He won his first and only game as 49ers coach, 38–7 over the Arizona Cardinals. Jim Harbaugh retained Tomsula in his previous position as defensive line coach following Harbaugh’s hire as the 49ers head coach.

On January 14, 2015, it was reported by NFL Insider Adam Shefter that the 49ers were set to promote Tomsula to Head Coach following Jim Harbaugh’s departure on December 28, 2014. This was after many reports of then-Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase being the frontrunner for the job, who was the only coaching candidate for the 49ers to get a second interview (Tomsula, by comparison, wasn’t interviewed).

D’Marco Farr said on 101.1 that he was an assistant coach with Tomsula in NFL Europe. Says he really knows how to talk to players, and believes he will get the most out of San Fran’s talent.

Shrug. I don’t know. Just thought I’d pass along those comments.

Pretty uninspiring hire by the 49ers.

Looks like upper management got a coach they can keep in line.

Looks to me like owner Boy Jed is in waaaay over his head.

Jim Tomsula Needs to Work on His Interview Game

Jim Tomsula, the San Francisco 49ers new coach, went on Comcast in the Bay Area and … well, this happened. He sounds like pretty much what you’d expect a line coach to sound like. For the first :20 he doesn’t really say a word, he just sort of grunts and makes noises as if he were a farm animal, and shakes his head a lot.

A few of the questions are bizarre, especially the one at the :55 mark, to which Tomsula is so puzzled he just goes silent for a few seconds. His expression screams: “What language is this guy speaking?”

After that, Tomsula doesn’t give one straight answer. It’s as if GM Trent Baalke programmed him to be a robot and to come in and say nothing, since he won’t be making decisions, anyway. I don’t see how this doesn’t end in disaster for Tomsula, Baalke and the 49ers. Give it three years.

3 years of slow, soul-degrading decline sounds good to me.

Especially if the cupboards are completely bare, and the 9ers are in salary cap hell at the end of 2017.

    Works for me.

Screw the Farty-Whiners who gives a shit about them? I hope they turn into a joke and lose for the next 20 years just the Rams did under Frontiere.

    He’s their Ray Malavasi.

We don’t know yet if he will be a good head coach. There’s all kinds. Not all are media savvy.

    Just a quote from Tomsula,
    i thot was interesting:

    http://www.ninersnation.com/2015/1/17/7525283/jim-tomsula-coaching-philosophy-49ers/in/7313196
“How do I know where you’re at and where you’re going unless I talk to you, and you let me know where you’re at, what you feel, and your thoughts. So now, if we can open that up, now you’ll tell me, you’re the player, I’m the coach. You’ll tell me where I need to go in coaching you. You’ll tell me how I can help you. And a big thing for me, I firmly believe a coach works for the player. Demand your coaching. Now, there’s structure, there’s a chain of command, we’ve all gotta stay with that, or you have chaos. OK, so, it’s built in a structure environment, but coaches essentially, what do I do? My job is to help my players perform better on Sunday. That’s game day. So, everything we do is to maximize a player’s ability, and his value on Sunday, within a team concept.”
