Rams sign Jeff Fisher to two-year extension
Around The NFL staff
NFL.comLos Angeles has given its coach an early Christmas gift.
The Rams have extended Jeff Fisher’s contract for two more years, through the 2018 season, a source informed of the situation told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Fisher agreed to the new deal in the preseason and signed it during the season, per Rapoport.
Around The NFL will have more on this shortly.
December 4, 2016 at 10:23 am #60158InvaderRamModeratorgotta say i’m mildly disappointed.
at the very least jeff has to replace boras. i’d go as far as replacing boudreau.
the only thing i’m happy about is that goff gets needed stability. not a requirement but it helps a lot.
December 4, 2016 at 10:35 am #60161ZooeyModeratorThat’s exactly what I expected to happen.
I will guess that it also contains a buy out clause for Kroenke.
December 4, 2016 at 10:38 am #60162wvParticipantSo he can still be fired though, right? I mean Kronky would just have to pay him two more years.
I would ‘guess’ the next five games still matter.
The ‘timing’ of this report is interesting. I mean, Why NOW?

December 4, 2016 at 10:40 am #60163InvaderRamModeratoralso this had been signed months ago as had been previously speculated.
i don’t think it’s the worst thing to happen.
i don’t think he’s a terrible coach. but i also thought it might be time for a change.

vif they tank the rest of the way and fans revolt?
i don’t know what would happen.

They won’t care.
They will assume they can rally in 2017 and that winning puts an end to the “revolt.”

Despite staring at another losing record this season, Jeff Fisher isn’t going anywhere.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday on GameDay Morning the Los Angeles Rams signed the head coach to a two-year extension through 2018.
Per Rapoport, the deal was agreed to in the preseason and was signed during the season.
Fisher entered the season in the final year of his deal.
While the Rams did not announce a deal was in place, questions about Fisher’s extension have swirled since the summer.
Speaking with NFL Network’s Steve Wyche recently, Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff was mum on an extension, but defended his coach’s performance this season.
“Everybody will want to judge Jeff through the prism of just the record, but that’s totally unfair when you look at the set of circumstances he was handed this year,” Demoff said. “It was different than any team in the NFL.
“We moved halfway across the country, then had OTAs in Oxnard. Training camp was in Irvine, now we’re in Thousand Oaks. We moved coaches and players and families. To provide leadership and consistency, he’s done a model job.”
In his first four seasons with the Rams, Fisher has guided the team to records of 7-8-1, 7-9, 6-10, and 7-9. The Rams currently sit at 4-7 with a difficult schedule down the stretch. Fisher hasn’t led a team to a winning season since 2008 and has just six seasons in his 22-year coaching career with more than eight victories.
Fisher was under heat locally this week, as Rams legend Eric Dickerson called for the coach to be fired.
Despite the uproar in Los Angeles regarding Fisher, the contract extension ensures that the coach will be around at least next season.
December 4, 2016 at 10:48 am #60168znModeratorand now it gets down to this
It’s a kind of standoff between those who
* claim Fisher is bad no matter what
* say that the team has been affected by circumstances no coach overcomes (eg. only one team in the history of the NFL had a winning record after moving…and very few win much if they don’t have a starting qb).
If the first group is right, even with the qb issue settled, they can’t win.
If the 2nd group is right, especially with the qb issue settled, sure they can win.
Let time tell.

As I’ve said many times I’m ambivalent about Fisher. According to some on the net this makes me somebody who is complicit with losing. At any rate, I think I’ll go watch some meltdowns elsewhere.
December 4, 2016 at 10:54 am #60174wvParticipantI think it sez a lot about Kronky. He’s very patient for one thing. I cant think of another owner who has extended a coach after four losing seasons (it was signed in preseason).
Maybe he’s also stubborn and unwilling to admit he made a mistake?
Or is he a genius and championships are just around the corner?
I would have never extended him. I’d have let this season play out
and THEN decided what to do. And given how the rams have played
I’d have signed another coach after this season. Kronky sees it differently, obviously.Or does he. What if the Rams finish with five wins…

Posted by Mike Florio on December 4, 2016, 10:58 AM EST
ST. LOUIS, MO – DECEMBER 21: Les Snead, general manager of the St. Louis Rams looks on during warm ups prior to playing against the New York Giants at the Edward Jones Dome on December 21, 2014 in St. Louis, Missouri. (Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images) Getty ImagesRams coach Jeff Fisher isn’t the only guy who has gotten a new contract in L.A. G.M. Les Snead has a new deal, too.
PFT has confirmed that the new contract for the coach coincides with a new contract for the General Manager.
Snead, who was hired in 2012 from the Falcons front office, has worked closely with Fisher over the past five years. The fact that Fisher was hired before Snead created the impression that Fisher runs the show, and that Snead sets the table for the draft and free agency.
Snead presumably has a two-year extension as well. It’s unclear whether the extension previously was in place, but given that Fisher’s was, it’s safe to assume Snead’s was, too.

Jeff Fisher extension was signed “weeks ago”
Posted by Mike Florio on December 4, 2016, 10:17 AM EST
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – SEPTEMBER 1: Head coach Jeff Fisher of the Los Angeles Rams looks on during the fourth quarter of the game against the Minnesota Vikings on September 1, 2016 at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Vikings defeated the Rams 27-25. (Photo by Hannah Foslien/Getty Images) Getty ImagesFor most of the season, league insiders have insisted that the Rams and coach Jeff Fisher already have a new deal in place. In the aftermath of the news that Fisher has a two-year extension, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the deal indeed has been in place for “weeks.”
Which raises an interesting question about the contract: Why was the news of it leaked today?
It could be that the Rams and Fisher became increasingly antsy about the fan base’s willingness to accept a continuation of Fisher’s tenure with the team, given an all-out assault from Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson that has culminated in Dickerson recently playing the “where are the naked pictures?” card.
Then there’s the fact that the news was leaked only a few hours before the Rams face the Patriots, a franchise that has beaten Jeff Fisher-coached teams by the combined score of 104-7 in their past two encounters. Squatting on the secretly-signed contract until after the Patriots hang another 40 or 50 on the Rams would have made it a lot harder to justify the move.
And so while the Rams apparently were waiting for the right moment to announce the deal with Fisher, it could be that they decided there would be no right moment, and that the contract needed to be unveiled before the wrong moment became a worst-case scenario.

Two-year extension suggests 2017 will be up-or-out for Jeff Fisher

GLENDALE, AZ – OCTOBER 02: Head coach Jeff Fisher of the Los Angeles Rams walks the sidelines during the second quarter of the NFL game against the Arizona Cardinals at the University of Phoenix Stadium on October 2, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images) Getty ImagesWhen it comes to contracts given to NFL players and coaches, the devil takes up permanent residence in the details. As to players, those details always become known. As to coaches, the nuances rarely make their way to the surface.
As to Rams coach Jeff Fisher, who officially has received a two-year extension, the biggest detail relates to the actual security Fisher has received. If, as some league insiders believe, the contract includes a one-year out for the team, Fisher has security only for 2017.
The winds had been blowing in the direction of Fisher staying put. Comments from COO Kevin Demoff strongly suggested that the team’s 4-7 record wouldn’t be held against Fisher, given the changes the team has endured in 2016.
Even without a one-year out clause in the new contract, 2017 now feels like an up-or-out year for Fisher. In 2012, Fisher received a five-year deal, and the exclamation point of commitment that went along with it. With only a two-year Band-Aid currently in place beyond 2016, the not-so-subtle message is that, while Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson isn’t getting what he wants for now, the change he craves could be coming in 2017

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – AUGUST 13: Head coach Jeff Fisher of the Los Angeles Rams works during warmups for the game against the Dallas Cowboys at the Los Angeles Coliseum during preseason on August 13, 2016 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images) Getty ImagesWith the Rams five games away from concluding the five-year contract signed in 2012 by coach Jeff Fisher, league insiders continue to suggest that Fisher already has a new deal in place, along with G.M. Les Snead.
As one league source explained it to PFT, the theory/hypothesis/rumor currently making the rounds is that the contracts will cover multiple years, but will give the Rams the ability to void the contracts after one year.
If true, this means that the deals will actually be one-year Band-Aids masquerading as multi-year deals, giving the Rams the flexibility to cancel the arrangements without financial penalty after 2017.
The Rams consistently have said that there is no update regarding the contracts of Fisher and Snead, both of whom will become free agents absent new contracts. Recent comments from COO Kevin Demoff have been interpreted as a strong hint that Fisher will indeed be back.
December 4, 2016 at 11:20 am #60182AgamemnonParticipantDecember 4, 2016 at 11:21 am #60183wvParticipantI dont see the ‘one year buy out’ theory as all ‘that’ important given the fact that Kronky is a multi-billionaire and can fire Fisher any time he wants, and just eat the contract-money.
I assume Kronky gave his word that fisher would get a pass on any ‘move’ year and so I assume Kronky feels he has to give Fisher one more year.

i don’t think it gets down to that. i don’t think he’s a terrible coach. i just think at some point you make a change. not necessarily JUST for the sake of making a change. but just going in a different direction.
but who knows maybe they hire a new oc. i’m not a believer that it boils down to just needing a starting qb. to me the issues go beyond that.
did you hear that jeff? now go prove me wrong.
…
seriously. i hope he proves me wrong cuz then that means it was just jared all along.
i’ll be happy as long as the rams can start winning.

No. It means he’s got guaranteed money coming to him. But no guarantee he’ll be the coach in 2017December 4, 2016 at 11:39 am #60189znModeratori just think at some point you make a change.
Unless, of course, you don’t.
I don;t believe the “at some point you make a change” thing IR.
I don’t see the reason for it or the logic behind it.
Let;s put it this way. It;s at least cancelled out by “at some point you commit to continuity.”
And if he starts winning all of this discussion is beside the point.

make eric eat his shorts. i mean, damn. i never really followed him. wasn’t a rams fan until much later.
but he needs to go bugger off.
December 4, 2016 at 11:42 am #60192JackPMillerParticipantThis is a slap in the face to Ram fans. Stan extends Fisher, instead of going out and hire a real Head Coach. I guess Kronke does not care about winning, and seeing empty seats next year. I can see a lot of empty seats in the home opener. I will be watching First Take tomorrow to see what Stephen A. will say.

He doesn’t win. Fisher is overrated. The last winning season Fisher had, was back in 2008. Fisher better start winning, because it will be like the Rams are playing 16 road games next year.

i do think that is a very valid point.
but also change could come in the form of making some coaching changes.
these next 5 games will be important. if not for fisher’s job then the jobs of his assistants.

Depending on how much you think you can put on a rookie qb.
See…it’s never just one thing and it’s never that simple.
There are scenarios where they could win and still think they need changes.
There are scenarios where they could lose and see themselves going the right direction with what they have.

Exactly. One playoff berth in the next two years, and all the pissing and moaning among fans evaporates and disappears.
