Rams try not to panic as third starting offensive lineman is injured at camp
By Gary Klein

Sean McVay is going to have to wait awhile.
The offensive line that cost the Rams tens of millions of dollars to reconfigure is mired in injuries as McVay prepares his team for Sunday’s joint practice with the Chargers.
On Thursday, McVay said left guard Jonah Jackson would be “week to week” after suffering a shoulder injury Tuesday. Left tackle Alaric Jackson remained sidelined because of an ankle injury, and Thursday right tackle Rob Havenstein left practice because of an unspecified foot injury.
The Rams do not play their opener until Sept. 8 at Detroit, so the linemen have plenty of time to recover.
McVay, however, does not play starters in preseason games, making joint practices with other teams the best opportunity to measure the progress of the offense, defense and special teams.
When the Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford visit El Segundo to practice with the Chargers — who feature pass rushers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack — they possibly could be without the three injured starting linemen.
Joe Noteboom has been playing left tackle, Zach Thomas left guard.
“We’ll be better when those guys are back, whenever that timetable is,” McVay said of the starters, “but in the meantime we owe it to ourselves and the other guys to be able to pour into them.”
After making the playoffs last season, the Rams poured millions into re-signing right guard Kevin Dotson (three years, $32 million guaranteed per Overthecap.com), and then signed free-agent left guard Jonah Jackson (three years, $34 million guaranteed), which enabled them to move second-year pro Steve Avila from left guard to center.
Alaric Jackson, a restricted free-agent, received a second-round tender that cost the Rams $4.9 million.
Jonah Jackson’s injury appears to be the most serious.
Last season with the Detroit Lions, Jackson was sidelined for four games because of wrist and ankle injuries. He did not play in the NFC championship game because of a knee injury suffered in the divisional round.
During offseason workouts, Jonah Jackson did not participate in most on-field drills while working back from knee surgery.
McVay said Jonah Jackson had his “best practice” before he suffered the shoulder injury.
“I know he wants to be out here more than anybody, and he played great the other day,” McVay said. “He’s got a body of work — there’s a reason why we felt so strongly about being able to add him here, and this is another little temporary setback.”
Etc.
Defensive tackle Kobie Turner, who has been limited since the start of training camp because of a groin issue, participated in team drills. “You felt his presence, his communication, his ability to disrupt,” McVay said. … The Rams are off Friday. They will practice Saturday and then practice with the Chargers on Sunday in El Segundo.August 4, 2024 at 11:00 am #151600znModeratorJourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigueRob Havenstein has an ankle injury per Sean McVay and is week to week; he says it is not season-ending..McVay also downgraded Alaric Jackson (ankle) from “day to day” to “week to week” Rams starting LT, LG and RT all “week to week” right now.August 4, 2024 at 6:57 pm #151605InvaderRamModeratorPuka Nacua left practice a little over an an hour into it after a team drills period, and did not return to play but stayed in uniform and helmet on sideline. He had a bag of ice wrapped around his right knee.
Sean McVay says he is “not sure” what happened.

Puka Nacua injured. Looks like it could be a right PCL sprain or patella bone bruise if it’s strictly impact related with the ground. Seems minor. He jogged off after.Rams Bros.@RamsBrothers
PCL sprain is a 10-day recovery time, bone bruise would probably put him in the “week to week” category. It’s encouraging to hear a) he jogged off after the play and b) stayed in uniform for the remainder of the practice.August 6, 2024 at 8:25 pm #151626znModeratorJourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
Sean McVay says Puka Nacua (knee) is week to week but anticipated him being ready for prep for the opener and for that opener.Landed on a bursa sac, per McVay.
Stu Jackson@StuJRamsMcVay on Nacua: “Really just had a little bit of a bursa sac, kind of burst it. And it’s just going to be week-to-week with him. Nothing serious, nothing structurally.” Expects him to be ready to prep for season opener.August 8, 2024 at 2:45 pm #151634znModeratorJourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigueWarren McClendon is dealing with a bit of an ankle injury but still participating in today’s walkthrough. Stu Jackson
The Rams haven’t decided yet if quarterback Matthew Stafford (hamstring tightness) will practice Monday, but head coach Sean McVay on Sunday said the “arrow is pointing up” with Stafford and he “isn’t concerned” about the injury.
“I’m not concerned based on what I understand the tightness is, and erring on the safe side of caution for this week if that’s what we end up having to do,” McVay said.
Los Angeles has withheld Stafford from practicing since the second half of last Wednesday’s joint practice against the Dallas Cowboys as a precautionary measure. McVay said Stafford “can throw and do some of those things,” but indicated the decision on Stafford practicing had to with “just some of the movement, if he’s feeling good.”
McVay also isn’t concerned because of Stafford’s experience accumulated over the course of his career.
“He’s going to be ready to be ready to go and to prepare against Detroit,” McVay said. “And if we miss a couple days this week, if that’s the approach that we take on the safer side, he’ll still have two and a half weeks of preparation for Detroit.”
Meanwhile, rookie defensive back Kamren Kinchens, who did not participate in last week’s joint practice the the Cowboys or play in Sunday’s preseason game, will return to practice this week and be a full participant, according to McVay. McVay did not specify what the injury was that kept Kinchens out, but said withholding him from practice was just a precautionary measure.
“He’s done a great job,” McVay said. “It was really one of those deals that we didn’t feel like it was necessary to expose him to possible injury. He’s going to be a guy that’s going to be a factor for us. And so, until he was feeling all the way back to health, that was why we erred on the side of caution, and we expect him to get a full workload with the two practices here, and then the one on Thursday against the Texans.”
As for the group of players currently week-to-week with their respective injuries – wide receiver Puka Nacua (knee) and offensive linemen Alaric Jackson (ankle), Jonah Jackson (shoulder) and Rob Havenstein (ankle) – McVay said there’s “nothing finite as it relates to those guys,” but “they are looking more and more positive especially as it relates to starting to gear our focus toward Detroit in the near future.”

Sean McVay expects LG Jonah Jackson to “work back in” next week.Darious Williams as well
August 26, 2024 at 8:22 pm #151876znModeratorfrom https://www.turfshowtimes.com/2024/8/26/24229016/rams-cuts-injury-update-rob-havenstein-roster
.In Sean McVay’s latest update on injured players on Monday, the Rams head coach expressed optimism that guard Jonah Jackson and cornerback Darious Williams are both expected to be ready for Week 1, as is receiver Puka Nacua. However, on the topic of Rob Havenstein, McVay was less sure of his Week 1 availability after suffering an ankle injury at the beginning of August, calling it a “possibility” that the Rams would be without their right tackle.
That news is doubly-bad based on left tackle A.J. Jackson’s two-game suspension to start the season. However, if Havenstein is expected to miss multiple games, it could be in L.A.’s best interest to put him on IR before final cuts are made on Tuesday.
In the past, teams had to keep players on the 53-man roster before putting them on injured reserve, but a new rule allows teams to put up to two players on IR before the 53-man roster cutdown. This means that if the Rams have two players who need to go on IR, they will be able to keep additional two players during final cuts.
It’s a rule change that should be expected to have a significant impact on decisions made on Tuesday and Havenstein would seem to be the Rams player who could be closest to having it apply to his status.</p>
