I think it would be a loss. He’s the best Rams DC since Shurmur, IMO…and the personnel are taylored to his ways and means.
But I am not going to pre-judge any new guy.

January 7, 2017 at 2:43 pm #62565JackPMillerParticipantLet the new Head Coach decide. I think it is best. You don’t want to throw GWill on the new HC, especially with his past.
January 7, 2017 at 3:03 pm #62567ZooeyModeratorI’m not shedding tears if he goes, but I prefer to keep him for the reasons you mentioned.
I think Barron in particular is a very good player that only Williams uses to maximum effect, and a new DC is likely to miscast Barron, or dispose of him. Doing that would create two linebacker jobs to fill, along with a couple of DEs, and secondary help, to say nothing of an OL or two, and a WR.
Williams is better for continuity. Let’s not forget that the defense is pretty good. The problem is the offense. And revamping the whole thing is too big of an assignment for one offseason.
January 7, 2017 at 3:13 pm #62572TSRFParticipantI think he gets too cute at times.
Literally, what the hell is going on with his hair?
I wouldn’t miss him.
January 7, 2017 at 4:53 pm #62587sanbaggerParticipantI prefer a clean sweep at this time.If the incoming coach decides he wants to retain him, then so be it….I’m just ready for some new concepts around Ram land.

Yes!
The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.
Sprinkles are for winners.

Agreed. The only generators of excellence on this team for years.

I would say, getting the most out of a DL that had no ends.
Wauffle is just not to be dismissed. He’s the real deal and respected in the league for a reason.
January 8, 2017 at 8:35 am #62687TSRFParticipantMy bad.
I mistook Waufle for Bourreau.
Simple mistake, only one letter difference (OL coach vs. DL coach)…
January 8, 2017 at 2:39 pm #62775znModeratorI get that there are different opinions on GW.
But personally, I do regret losing him.
I will give the new guy leeway of course.

He was a good coach. But his units made too many mistakes of both classes, big mistakes and repeated mistakes, and those mistakes could not be explained away. There were too many, for me anyway.

True but that can be seen 2 ways.
First way is, they underachieved. The mistakes held them back.
Second way is, he had them overachieving. The mistakes come from a unit playing over its head and pressing.
I actually see it the second way.

I cant decide.

vJanuary 9, 2017 at 1:43 pm #62937snowmanParticipantI would prefer that he leave.
For as good as the defense has been overall, looking at the stats, Williams was give n a wealth of high draft picks and still we give up too many big plays and collapse in the 4th quarter. For what he had to work with, I expect a Steel Curtain type defense even with the injuries to Quinn, et al.
I could not help but notice Coty Sensabaugh playing fairly well for the Giants yesterday. He was completely unseless for the Rams, how could Spags make him an effective corner when Williams could not and gave up on him so quickly?
January 9, 2017 at 7:38 pm #62968canadaramParticipantThe defense wasn’t great, but considering that half the time it must have felt like Hekker was on his way out to punt before they reached the sideline after a 3rd down stop they played ok in my book. Also, with the losses in the secondary and the lack of production from the DEs it could have been much worse. It’s possible that they improve under a new DC, but it’s also a strong possibility that the D regresses. Imagine another bottom 3 offence and a bottom ten defense next season? 😳

A lot has happened so I haven’t had a chance to get back to this. But. Like a lot of people, for me, hiring Phillips just wipes out any concerns I may have had.
Not only is Phillips a GREAT defensive coach, BUT, on top of it, his defense is really not that big of an adjustment for this personnel. For example as we know Donald stays at 3 tech. It’s a one-gap 3/4 so in essence it’s not that different from their previous 4/3. Plus, their thing is to adapt the scheme to the personnel…which means whatever has been cultivated with this group already can just be developed. It’s not quite the same as players having to learn an entirely new scheme.
So…this aspect of it anyway could not have turned out better.
