They apparently like the idea of Barron at ILB too. Also just as apparently no one likes the idea of him at safety–not Tampa, not the Fisher/Williams Rams, not the McVay/Phillips Rams.
Another team that runs a 1-gap 3/4 D with an ex-safety at ILB is Arizona, where 6’1″ 216 lb ex-safety Deone Bucannon has that role. Last year ARZ had the #2 ranked defense, 9th against the run, and 3rd on defensive yards per rush allowed (3.6). If you look at run-game responsibilities, the ARz defense was ranked 3rd against runs going up the middle (involving G-C-G), 7th against runs over the LOT, and 11th against run going over the ROT–which all taken together covers absolutely any run D responsibility Bucannon might have.
So having Bucannon at ILB did not hurt Arz any. It would seem that Phillips is thinking along the same lines with Barron.
They also apparently like the idea, as we know, of Joyner at FS and Alexander (ironically a converted LB) at SS. And….I look forward to seeing that.
My bet is they know what they are doing and it will work.
This is going to be a FAST defense. Its strengths (Donald, Ogletree, Joyner) are athletic guys who can really disrupt. Barron is part of that too I think. There are still some questions (…can Quinn come through at OLB? do they have their corners? Do they have a LOLB or a LDE?…) but I think they have a lot to work with.
