Just thinking out loud. Is it absolutely a sure thing that the first 2 picks have to be offense? It’s possible that this draft really could present a situation where the better players available in rounds 2 and 3 are defensive players.

And of course they do have defensive needs. With Westbrooks possibly iffy because of off the field stuff, LDE is a need. So is edge rusher—Quinn has been hurt for 2 years and Barwin is on a one year. And it is possible to imagine a situation where the CBs available are better than any WRs or TEs at that point.

The situation IMO is like this. No offensive additions will raise the offense enough to carry the team.

But it is also possible that circumstances could work out to lower the effectiveness of the defense (eg. problems in the front 7 like ones I already suggested).

The worst case scenario, then, is an offense that doesn’t improve enough after just one draft plus a defense that slips some (again for reasons already stated).

The best case scenario is a defense that is so strong it can carry the team while the offense is improving.

With a few exceptions, the Rams really should pick the best available player all the way through the draft. I don’t know what we have in Higbee, so I don’t know if TE is a position of need to the same degree as WR. Besides center, the interior O Line with Havenstein and Donnal and Wichman plus Saffold and Robinson moving inside, we might be just fine there. Don’t be seduced by ‘athleticism’, draft productive players from division 1 programs (sorry JPMiller) with no off field issues.

I would be fine seeing the first three picks going WR, Center, Safety, CB or OLB.

When you pick at #37 things are chaotic. I think the first 2 picks will be CB and/or a pass catcher, because there seems to be value there at every point in the draft. After pick 100, I think things get pretty even. They can pick for need, one of each, in any order.
