Could any leftover free agents interest the Los Angeles Rams?
The Rams are most likely done making moves….. or are they?

Now that free agency and the NFL Draft have both passed, most rosters are generally set and ready to go for the remainder of the offseason. Either way, there are plenty of quality free agents who remain unsigned, and a handful of them can still make an impact for various franchises.Let’s take a look at who could make sense for the Los Angeles Rams:
C/G Stefen Wisniewski
Wisniewski is a 30-year old veteran who could step in and backup three positions immediately, if not push for a starting spot at either left guard or center. I’d hedge the Rams want Joe Noteboom and Brian Allen to start, but Wiz — as they call him — could offer plenty of veteran experience behind both barring injuries. Wiz has played in 123 NFL games, starting 101 of those. He also has a Super Bowl ring from his time in Philadelphia, so that doesn’t hurt.C/G Ryan Groy
Groy is a guy who the Rams actually tried to sign in 2017 when the new regime under Head Coach Sean McVay began. Groy was a restricted free agent at the time with the Rams offering him a contract sheet (which he signed) that was ultimately matched by the Buffalo Bills. Long story short, he’s got plenty of experience under Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach Aaron Kromer, and could compete at guard and center.G Nico Siragusa
Siragusa is a 24-year old former fourth-round pick who hasn’t played due to a torn ACL as a rookie, and last season spent as depth for the Green Bay Packers. Siragusa fits a power blocking scheme better, though he could be brought in for cheap and to compete in training camp.DT Ndamukong Suh
I mean, this would be great, wouldn’t it? Suh wasn’t elite with the Rams, but he was still very effective. I think the key to keeping Suh near-elite level is to dial back his snaps because playing 850+ snaps year-in-year-out is wearing him out. With the addition of Greg Gaines on running downs, Suh could be kept fresh as a rotational pass rusher. Issue is the cap space, though let’s give it another shot. What say you, Ndamukong?LB Zach Brown
Brown is one of the best linebackers in football, so his continuous trips to free agency is quite a head-scratcher. Either way, Brown was released only one year after signing a three-year $24m deal by the Washington Redskins. His elite speed allows him to be a weapon on all three downs, and all the Rams have at inside linebacker at this time is Cory Littleton and Micah Kiser.LB Jamie Collins
Collins is not one that interests me personally, though his fit would make a lot of sense in Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips’ defense. Collins is an off-ball linebacker with blitz skills and even some coverage ability. He was at his best years ago with the New England Patriots and has yet to re-create that magic, though playing with the Cleveland Browns hasn’t exactly done him any favors. Either way, Collins was one to take plenty of plays off in Cleveland, and that doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence, especially when you consider the culture the Rams have built within their building.May 4, 2019 at 8:41 am #100929InvaderRamModeratori don’t know about fit, but i’d try to sign brown on a one year deal.
suh too. i don’t know how you fit that under the cap…
May 4, 2019 at 10:19 am #100934znModeratorInterestingly, the Rams have been linked in the past to 3 of those 5 players. They made a run at Groy in 2017. Buffalo matched on him (if memory serves). They flirted with Wisniewski at one point too, in the Fisher days. And of course Suh vacationed in LA as a Ram last year (though he did show up in the post-season).

Philly grabbed Zach Brown.

I’d love to see the Rams sign Danny Shelton. Gaines sounds like he’s gonna be pretty good. But you can’t have too many space-eatin’, run-stuffin hogmollies.
Shelton gave the Rams fits in the Super Bowl, and weighs in the 350 range. Crazy athletic for his size.

i like gaines too, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to sign a guy like shelton. gaines will still be a rookie. and a fourth rounder. far from a guarantee.

I think they would have already done this, if they weren’t so tight up against the cap. Saved a bit by cutting Countess. But it’s apparently still tight.
Are they due for the same constraints next year?

good question. i don’t know.

Next year, at this point, before the 2019 (and 2020) rookies are signed etc, the Rams have nearly 65 M in cap space. That’s assuming a 200 M cap. The 135+ in contracts already on the books includes huge cap hits from Donald, Goff, Gurley, and Cooks. That’s also with Weddle and Matthews counting against the cap, and it’s not clear that either one or both will play next year.
But, the 2020 free agents include Fowler, Whitworth, Brockers, Talib, Littleton, Peters, and Higbee. It’s not clear how many of those 7 will play in 2020, or which ones the Rams will sign. It absolutely won’t be all of them.

Thanks, ZN.
Looking ahead to after the next season, but judging from what we know now . . . perhaps not a really smart thing to do . . . I’d bet they try to keep Fowler, Littleton and Peters — if he plays like he did late in the season — and assume that Talib and Whitworth retire. I like Brockers’ game, so I hope they re-sign him. But he’s probably on the bubble and does have a bit of a cap hit. Higbee? I think he’s a solid TE, and hasn’t really been utilized all that much. I suspect, however, he’s on his way out too. He has really good size and is an above average athlete, said to be a really good blocker. They might not find his replacement so easily . . . but who knows?
Anyway, it sounds like they’re in decent shape and should be able to pick up some help in Free Agency next time. The cap seems too tight for that now.
May 4, 2019 at 6:43 pm #100965HramParticipantI wonder if Talib and the RAMS would entertain a move to FS after this year.
