I’m guessing this won’t happen. But I wish they could just find someone in house, willing to keep the same defense as Staley’s. It’s gotta be tough for players to learn a brand new system, and it tends to lead to slow starts.

Ego likely comes into play, of course. I doubt many new DCs want to just keep the previous regime in place. They want to make their own mark, and I understand that. They have their own ideas, and given the chance, want to implement them.

But Staley’s D worked so well — with rare exceptions, like the GB game — I’d love to see it in 2021 too.

Find a really good coach, in house, one who can motivate, get the players to buy in to his leadership, but keep the 2020 D in place.

    That’s my hope.

Rams targeting Raheem Morris as next defensive coordinator

The Los Angeles Rams have identified their target to replace Brandon Staley as the team’s defensive coordinator. According to Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Rams are focusing on former Falcons interim head coach and defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.

Morris was Atlanta’s interim coach for the final 11 games of the season after Dan Quinn was fired, going 4-7 during that stretch. The Falcons’ defense got off to a terrible start by allowing at least 30 points in four of their first five games, but they turned things around a bit once Morris transitioned to interim coach.

Morris, 44, was head coach of the Buccaneers from 2009-2011, his first and only stint as a full-time head coach. Tampa Bay went 17-31 in that span and after Morris was fired, he joined Washington as the secondary coach from 2012-2014 – which is where he crossed paths with Sean McVay for a second time; they also worked on the same staff in Tampa Bay.

He also has experience on the offensive side of the ball, coaching Atlanta’s wide receivers from 2016-2019.

The Rams ranked first in scoring defense and yards allowed, so Morris will have some big shoes to fill if he does get the job.

I am told that former Falcons DC/interim head coach Raheem Morris is the top external candidate for the Rams DC job, and things could move quickly toward him this week – but the Rams have also been working through interview process with internal candidates as well.

McVay and Morris have a ton of history and rapport together from a couple different staffs, FWIW. Falcons ran a 4-3 but everybody has to be multiple now or suffer, so don’t think we should see cement there. I’m more interested in what happens on back end and need LB answers too

Rams “base” (such an archaic term since everyone is in sub packages) anyway should always be: “Aaron Donald, then whatever gets Jalen Ramsey into the most action”…anybody got a good shorthand name for that?
