Rams have had some good ballcarriers
over the years. Anybody think Gurley
is similar to any former Rams?
Can he be in the pantheon
with Faulk and Dickerson ?Marshall Faulk,
Eric Dickerson,
Jerome Bettis,
Lawrence McCutcheon,
Wendell Tyler,
Willie Ellison,
Les Josephson

May 3, 2015 at 4:06 pm #23881PA RamParticipantI’ve only seen highlights but he runs a bit upright like Dickerson, but seems a bit more shifty. Dickerson was more straight ahead, find the opening—gone. Gurley is moving forward but he seems a bit more athletic in a way.
But ED is not a bad comparison.

Well, I’m still watchin utubes, trying to figure out
who he compares to. Who he looks like.I dunno…Ive watched four of his utubes and
I am not sure what they have in Gurley.
He is fast — but he gets caught from behind. Its not like he’s ‘blazing’ fast.
He dont seem all that ‘shifty’ like say, a Faulk or Barry Sanders.
A lot of his big runs were just good blocking — he just
burst through gaping holes. He does seem hard to bring down. He bounces off of
people — though he aint as big as a Steven Jackson. He’s got good balance.

i read somewhere that he beat chris conley in a 40 yard dash. conley ran a 4.35 at this combine. no idea what it is post surgery.
as far as style he reminds me of edgerrin james. similar body type. edgerrin was a little smaller. but yeah. watching the both of them run. very similar. that comparison came from a charlie casserly interview on nfl network.
in the post-draft interview i think he said that he admires cj spiller. don’t know if he tries to emulate him.
May 3, 2015 at 8:00 pm #23921MackeyserModeratorHe was caught from behind as a Sophomore, but he was battling an ankle.
As a Freshman? No.
Now? Not likely.
Actually, AP is a very good description for when he’s right. Strong enough to truck people and fast enough to run right by people…IN TRAFFIC.
It’s just amazing to me to watch a DB or LB set up the angle and think they’ve got him and because of his speed, the defender just ends up chasing him.
Just. Like. AP.
Plus, he’s very good at catching the ball and I LOVE that he understands that the FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS is learning Pass Pro.
This guy is going to be a super star in this league…
I know I’m banging the table hard for this guy, but I can’t help it…
He’s almost like Suh in this regard. The more tape I watch… the more I like about this kid…which if anyone knows me is unusual. It’s normally the other way around.
And don’t get me started about this kid’s stiff arm…

May 3, 2015 at 8:04 pm #23922PA RamParticipantBucky Brooks compares him to Marshawn Lynch.

Walter Football says: Marshawn Lynch
http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2015tgurley.php
Player Comparison: Marshawn Lynch. In terms of Gurley’s running style, the closest comparison is Lynch. Both have power and speed, and are difference-makers who can carry an offense. I think Gurley is faster while Lynch may have a bit more power to him. Lynch was the 12th-overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, and Gurley could go in the same general area this year.

NFL COMPARISON Marshawn Lynch
CBS Sports says: Marshawn Lynch
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/2000877/todd-gurley
COMPARES TO: Marshawn Lynch, Seahawks — Like Lynch, Gurley is best known for simply bowling over defenders, but each back’s success is also a testament to good vision, surprisingly light feet and balance to bounce off would-be tacklers.
Bleacher Report says: Adrian Peterson

SI says: Adrian Peterson

That seems to be the sentiment. Lynch and Peterson.
That’s not too shabby.

go on, mack. go on. i love reading this stuff.
i agree about the receiving skills. i think that will be a significant part of the rams offense. a nice outlet for foles to go to.
May 3, 2015 at 8:38 pm #23929InvaderRamModeratorreally. everyone watch the waldman piece on gurley. great stuff.
it’s soothing.
May 7, 2015 at 7:45 pm #24276InvaderRamModeratori think a healthy gurley could potentially be the most complete back under a fisher coached team.
eddie george had the power. but he didn’t have the explosion.
chris johnson had the explosion. but he didn’t have the strength that george possessed.
steven jackson had power and explosion, but by the time fisher came, he was a shell of his former self.
i believe gurley will eventually have both those traits. maybe less power than eddie or steven. and less explosion than johnson. but he’ll have a good mix of the too. plus he can catch the ball, and he seems to have the requisite attitude to become a good blocker. eventually.
of course if his knee never heals, this will all be moot.
i also read about how some people feel he should be the workhorse. i don’t agree. i think he will be most effective with 250 carries. add in 40-50 receptions. and i think you get maximum effectiveness out of him. meaning you’ll get the most amount of explosive plays off him without subjecting him to unnecessary wear and tear. any more carries and i believe you get diminishing returns. mason should get the other 150 carries. and he should be effective. also giving the rams explosive plays. those two combined will be more effective than gurley handling the workload by himself.

Well this one is a judgement call and open to different views. I mean Peterson missed time with a knee, and Gore missed time with fractured hip. They came back and my bet is Gurley does too. Given that, who do I think he will be like? All the comparisons above work for me, except he also has a couple of things that are unique to him I think.

Banged up RB relying upon a questionable at best O-line. I’m not much excited about it. Some posts said he is getting caught from behind? What were his great attributes as a RB that gets the one in a decade spiel I’ve heard? Not as good as Bo Jackson, AP, Barry Sanders. Not as strong as Steven Jackson or Lynch. Not as elusive as Faulk. Sorry but I’m not seeing the case for the pick other than the low expectations for this team makes the gamble somewhat more palatable. Don’t forget he was playing on a great college team that steamrolled opponents. That isn’t this Rams team in the NFL. Then there’s the lets limit his play since he isn’t seen as durable enough to carry the load at RB so platoon him substantially with Mason and perhaps Cunningham too? I guess I need the Rolaids more than everyone else here although I don’t know why.

Oh I see the case, absolutely. We just differ on that.

Do you mean Fisher building the Rams into defensive oriented team with a sustained ball control offense? Seahawks-ish? I don’t see it. No Lynch. No Wilson. Crappy O-line, check!

May 8, 2015 at 12:35 am #24298InvaderRamModeratori don’t think he is as strong as lynch, but i would guess he has better short area quickness. i also believe he has better explosion than him. and while he is not as elusive as faulk. my guess is he has better power than him.
the one thing we don’t know is how that knee is going to heal. the doctors inspected it closely and came away encouraged. but. who knows? maybe it snaps next season, and he’s back on the table and under the knife again…
look. i don’t think he’ll ever be as good as faulk. that man’s talent was transcendent. as is peterson’s. those are special special athletes.
but do i think he can be as good as lynch or gore or jackson? yeah. i think those are realistic expectations. is that worth the number 10 pick? in this draft, i think it was. in other drafts. maybe not.

Well no what I meant was I see Gurley’s qualities as a back.
But I personally don’t think Fisher is making this a Seattle style offense anyway. I think it will be the same balanced offense it has always been.
And Seattle has a crappy OL, but one without excuses because it is not young, and IMO the Rams in Gurley have IMO Lynch’s equal as a quality back.
The difference is, the Rams have been, are and will be more of a passing team than Seattle has been. IMO they will be a balanced team along the lines of Baltimore.
And of course…they ain’t done any of that yet, so….

May 8, 2015 at 1:49 am #24302Eternal RamnationParticipantPlease pardon my blasphemy but Gurley has Faulk’s micro gears he is definitely a freakish athlete and incredibly strong and he is very smart smarter than A.P. or Eddie George or E.D. for that matter. He is special and though you can see bits and pieces of all kinds of rbs in his game he is a unique talent
May 9, 2015 at 12:48 pm #24343InvaderRamModeratorwell that’s the one thing we don’t know about. is gurley’s intelligence. that was one thing that stood out about faulk outside of his athletic talent. and while gurley may not possess the elite speed of peterson it may be what’s inside his head that could give him an edge.
how fast can gurley process information. his field vision. as well as his dedication to film study and learning the playbook.
wow. i’m really excited guys. it’s gonna be fun watching this young man grow each game.

I saw the same thing. Good combination of vision, anticipation, ability to react to the 2nd guy coming, not just the guy in front of him.

It happens.
It’s not this rare, Adrian Peterson or Frank Gore only kind of thing.
