I get nostalgic every now and then for my high school years, and college, and the early post-college days. This can send me off to read a coming of age novel, or watch a coming of age movie. Last night I did the latter. Booksmart is streaming on Hulu, and I thought it was really good.
Lotsa twists off the usual formula, and instead of having male writers, director, leads and focus, it’s women who step forward to tell their stories. Funny, warm-hearted, surprising at times, it struck me as far more open about topics important to young people than those old John Hughes movies which I also like. More direct, linguistically explicit. The writers and director didn’t pull their punches.
