Nick Wagoner
EARTH CITY, Mo. — The St. Louis Rams traded wide receiver Chris Givens to the Baltimore Ravens for a seventh-round draft pick in 2017, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported Saturday morning.
It was far from an earth-shattering move considering Givens was the Rams’ fourth receiver and had only played 42 snaps in the first three weeks. The Rams have an open roster spot that will likely be filled Monday when running back Trey Watts is eligible to return from a four-game suspension. It’s expected that he will land back on the 53-man roster at that time.
But it was a logical move for the Rams, Givens and the Ravens. Here’s why:
Why it makes sense for the Rams: Coach Jeff Fisher made it clear Friday that receiver Brian Quick would be active Sunday in Arizona for the first time this season. With Quick up, it was unlikely the Rams would keep six wideouts on the game-day roster. And the assumption is that Quick’s role will only increase moving forward. Since Stedman Bailey and Bradley Marquez are core special teams players, that made Givens the odd man out. The Rams simply don’t use a lot of three-plus receiver sets and Givens was viewed as more of a deep threat and occasional gadget player. Since Givens is in his contract year, it made sense now to get something for him while they still could.
Why it makes sense for Givens: Put simply, this is an important year for Givens, who is still seeking the consistency to prove he’s worthy of his next contract. It’s also been a difficult year for him as he has grieved the loss of a close friend and again found himself mostly out of the week-to-week game plan save for the occasional touch here and there. In the Rams’ offense, Givens was mostly lost in the shuffle despite flashing big-play ability. But now he gets a fresh start in a place that could utilize his greatest skill: deep speed. With Joe Flacco at quarterback for the Ravens, Givens should get his share of deep shots and get plenty of playing time to prove he belongs.
Why it makes sense for the Ravens: Baltimore is banged up at wide receiver with rookie Breshad Perriman (knee), Steve Smith (back) and Michael Campanaro (back) all dealing with varying degrees of injury. Campanaro has already landed on injured reserve and Perriman and Smith are essentially week-to-week propositions. Givens offers an immediate influx of speed and fits in well with Flacco’s ability to throw it deep. The Ravens let Torrey Smith go in free agency, and though Givens is by no means at Torrey Smith’s level in terms of production, he offers a similar skill set when it comes to going deep. With 12 games to go in the season, Givens should get plenty of chances to show the Ravens what he can do.

Ravens got a good deal 7th rounder.
Couldn’t the Rams get at least a 7th for Pead?
October 3, 2015 at 12:47 pm #31609Eternal RamnationParticipantFisher is an idiot when it comes to wr’s. Maybe wait until Quick actually plays a game or two. A two years into the future 7th on the youngest team in the league stacked with 1s and 2s doesn’t bode well for future Rams teams though it does strengthen his legacy of failure.

Givens is in his last year. He hasn’t done anything to earn a second contract here. So Givens is gone after this season anyway.
So far this season: 1 Rec 7 yds.
Quick is better.

Unfortunately, neither Pead nor Givens had numbers that would suggest they were worth more than that. Very little production out of either, although at least Givens flashed his deep threat ability on occasion.
October 3, 2015 at 1:30 pm #31614AgamemnonParticipantLets go back to before football started this year. Givins was on the books for 1.5M, Pead for almost 1M. They both were scheduled to be URFAs next year. They both are the 5th player on the depth chart at their position. In a way I am slightly surprised that they lasted this long. We get a future 7th rounder. That isn’t much, but it is something.
That is enough to work on signing a future FA.
Givins is probably the roster space for Watts after the Arizona game.
October 3, 2015 at 1:36 pm #31616PA RamParticipantYeah–it’s funny. I thought the Toon signing had more to do with Quick but apparently it was all about Givens.
Our offensive players are appreciated elsewhere, apparently.
Bradford: Eagles
Givens: Ravens
Davis: Browns
Stacy: Jets
I hope Quick is truly healthy and ready to be the #1 guy. This offense needs him.

I don’t know Zack.People are becoming increasingly frustrated with our offense.I am reading more and more that people want Fisher fired. What’s your take this?
I’m not Zack, obviously, but here are my thoughts:
1. Fisher isn’t going anywhere this year or next year, so there’s no point stressing out over it. I think Fisher could be on the hot seat next season (zn disagrees with me, or at least did). By that I mean I think he is safe through the length of his contract for certain, but a failure NEXT season might mean Stan will evaluate him. I don’t think it’s likely he is gone after next season, either, though. First of all, I am pretty confident the Rams will be in the playoffs next year, and this issue will recede to the standard issue 10% or so of fans who complain about the coach regardless unless he has wins the Super Bowl. Secondly, Stan has a track record of sticking with a course of action both in his sports teams, and in his business developments. He makes a plan, and he keeps pounding away until he wins.
2. This team was terrible when he took over in 2012. Awful. Scrubs. I think there are 7 guys left on the roster from when he took over. Meaning he had to go get 50 guys. That takes time. Furthermore, there have been a lot of substantial injuries, and turnovers in his coordinators. So his “failure” is excusable so far, though I agree it’s time to start winning. But the Rams are STILL the youngest team in the NFL, especially the OL which is about as green as a line can be. New QB, new OC, new OL = takes some time to gel. So that’s the “excuse” side of it.
3. I think there is a lot of talent on this team now, and signs they are ripening even though there are still setbacks. I think this team IS ripening, and I think after the bye, this team is going to start fulfilling its promise. It may not be enough to make the playoffs this year, but I AM optimistic about next year.
Just look at the Martz, Linehan, Spags drafts below from 2000 – 2011, and see what Fisher/Snead have done from 2012 on.

Posted 3 hours ago
Myles Simmons Rams Insider @MylesASimmons
The Rams have made another roster move this week, trading wide receiver Chris Givens to the Ravens for a conditional draft pick.
A former fourth-round pick in the 2012 draft, Givens was one of the Rams’ leading receivers through his first two years in the league. But production tailed off last year, with the wideout making only 11 receptions for 159 yards and a touchdown. Through three contests this year, Givens had only one receptions for seven yards and a 24-yard end around against the Steelers last week.
St. Louis now has a roster spot open, which may or may not be filled for this week’s contest as the Rams must get down to their 46-man gameday roster.

In my mind? That kind of fan reaction mood? I have never had much interest in it. I like talking to individuals. I think group movements are just as often wrong as right. I was a critic of Martz very early on, when it wasn’t popular. I agreed with the general view that Linehan was a bust. For years, criticism of JZ was met with hostile responses…until the tide turned. Then being critical of JZ was not as dangerous to your posting health. I defended Vermeil after 98. Looking back I think Spags had all the flaws of a first-time coach, but then I never thought 2011 was on him…and I was in the minority on that.
I think Fisher will start winning, at least that’s how it looks to me right now, and I mean for consecutive seasons. IMO when that happens, the consensus will shift back his direction.

Quick is certainly better in this offense , a great blocker, should really help the struggling outside zone run scheme but they have an open roster spot and going up against the “no fly zone” Givens could’ve been a benefit running 9’s Givens lack of production wasn’t his fault. They just didn’t target him much , his career stats are close to double those of Quick’s if you are basing earning a contract on production. I can be happy for Givens knowing he’ll have Flacco’s cannon getting him the ball in the deep game he has been so effective in.

Yeah, it’s true to say he wasn’t targeted much, but after four years, you kind of have to think he wasn’t targeted much because he wasn’t open much. QBs will gladly throw to WRs who are open.
I think he will be better with Flacco – and because there isn’t much anyone else to throw to there – and I wish him well. But I don’t think he got screwed with the Rams. He’s basically a deep threat, and when defenses took the deep routes away from him, he didn’t get the ball much.
