THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — From Jamon Brown to Cody Wichmann to, now, Andrew Donnal. The Los Angeles Rams have used three of their 2015 draft picks at right guard this year, desperate for a spark for an offensive line that has been an unmitigated disaster all season.
Donnal, a fourth-round pick out of Iowa, had spent the year as a backup at every offensive-line position. But he took 93 percent of the snaps at right guard against the Atlanta Falcons two Sundays ago and every single one of them against the Seattle Seahawks the following Thursday, a game that saw Brown take a very rare snap at fullback.
Donnal, 6-foot-6 and 316 pounds, has more comfort at right guard than any other position and said he has improved on “a lot of things” since the start of training camp. But the Rams’ offensive line has struggled all year to open up holes for Todd Gurley, who ranks 39th among 42 qualified running backs in yards per carry. And over these last three weeks, No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff has been sacked 11 times.
“There’s a ton of things we just need to get better at as an offensive line, as a core,” Donnal said. “We need to just be better as a unit. It’s not individuals. We need to be one unit. And that’s really what we need to work on.”
