On losing the starting quarterback job in St. Louis, Nick Foles reacted much differently than Ryan Mallett. First, Foles showed up for work on Tuesday. Second, he didn’t throw a fit.
“You don’t expect [to be benched],” Foles told reporters regarding the news. “It’s just one of those things that — I respect Coach Fisher to start off. Of course, I want to be out there, but it’s his decision to make, and I respect it. I love Case [Keenum] to death. He’s one of my favorite people in the world, so I’m going to be right there to support him every step of the way and help him in any way possible.”
That doesn’t mean Foles is happy about it.
“There’s definitely emotions that come with it because you’re used to being out there and working,” Foles said. “It’s a different role, but at the same time, I’m a team-first guy. I care a lot about my teammates, so I’m going to do everything I can to prepare this week to help Case and help my teammates get a win this week.”
Foles doesn’t view the move as a breather or a “break.”
“I just look at it as what it is,” Foles said. “The decision was made and I respect Coach Fisher. I’m going to do the best that I can to be the best player on this team that I can and keep working to be better and support Case in any way possible.”
So what does he think he has to do to win back the job?
“It’s not like I’m going to do anything [different],” Foles said. “I’m going to keep working. I’ve gone through adversity before. I’ve gone through injuries. I’ve gone through setbacks. They’ve all made me stronger, they’ve all made me a better person. . . . In the grand scheme of things, we’re very fortunate to do the things that we do. There’s a lot worse things that could have happened. I’m going to use this and I’m going to go work and I’m going to keep working. I’m going to keep leading these guys in any way possible. Case is going to do a great job leading them as well, but I’m going to be right there to help him in every way possible.”
Friction and consternation would have been a lot more entertaining, but Foles doesn’t seem to be all that upset. After all, he’s still getting $6 million this year — and he’s guaranteed to make at least $6 million next year, whether he’s on the team or not.
