Fisher says blame Rams receivers for interceptions, not QB Case Keenum
VINCENT BONSIGNORE
http://www.ocregister.com/articles/keenum-733075-fisher-happen.html
LONDON – As far as Case Keenum was concerned, the four interceptions he threw Sunday against the New York Giants were his fault.
From the pick-six that went for a back-breaking touchdown in the second quarter to the ball he lofted into no-man’s land that fell into the arms of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to end the Rams’ hopes of a comeback, Keenum took the blame.
“You know, for me, a lot of this, I take full responsibility,” Keenum said. “You can’t turn the ball over in this league. A lot of them led directly to points, if not all of them. I’ve got to be better, I’ve got to take care of the ball.”
Not so fast, said Rams coach Jeff Fisher, who pointed the finger at everyone but Keenum for the interceptions. From inevitable tipped balls to Kenny Britt and Brian Quick not being on the same page with Keenum, seems like Fisher blamed fate and his wide receivers more than his quarterback.
“Take a look at the tape,” Fisher said. “See who’s responsible for the interceptions. Ball is going to get tipped; it happens. Balls get tipped. Brian didn’t get the audible. Kenny Britt stopped on the post. Didn’t think he was primary.”
So if you’re thinking Fisher will make a quarterback change from Keenum to Goff, forget it.
“I’ll make changes at receiver before I make a change at the quarterback,” he said.
One play in particular got Fisher’s ire.
With the Rams moving into position to score the tying touchdown on their final possession, Keenum recognized a blitz coming from the Giants so he audibled to a end zone pass to Quick.
Problem is, Quick apparently didn’t see Keenum’s hand signal to change the play.
“Miscommunication,” Quick said. “It just happened. Between us and the quarterback.”
Quick didn’t elaborate.
“Things happen that (aren’t) supposed to happen,” he said. “That’s how you lose games. Things happen. We don’t want it to happen like that.”
At least as far as Fisher is concerned, that’s more on the wide receivers than Keenum.
But Keenum, at least, thinks otherwise.
“It’s on me,” he said. “I’ve got to communicate better, whatever it is. I’ve got to talk to the guys about signals beforehand and be ready to go. You know, maybe be more clear with certain things.”
That didn’t happen Sunday.
And that means a long plane ride home to Los Angeles from London with a three-game losing streak to ponder.
“Things happen in a football game,” Rams wide receiver Britt said. “You have adjust to the time clock and the defense, what they’re doing out there. It’s pretty hard to go out there and communicate with your receivers especially with the time clock.
Another day, another loss. Another game in which the Rams weren’t on the same page.
Even when it came to declaring who was most to blame.
October 23, 2016 at 6:34 pm #55906InvaderRamModeratori like keenum. he’s falling on the grenade as a leader should.
as far as the ints go, the receivers should be getting their asses chewed out. pay attention! especially on that last possession. good grief.

The thing i want to know is — Is this offensive communication stuff “correctable”. Or not.
I mean they changed some stuff on offense, so is this just ‘learning curve’ stuff that they will at some point improve on? Or is this just bad coaching or players with low-football-IQs ?The WRs looked really good last week. This week it was up and down.
And what will Goff bring to this offense?

vNear as we know, there was this one mammoth F-up on this play.
And that goes to Brian Quick.
Not sure why there’s this endlessly widening circle of blame with that.
October 23, 2016 at 7:38 pm #55917JackPMillerParticipantEventually, the team is going to get sick of Fisher, to the point, where it will not be a shock to see the players quit on him. He is throwing everyone else under the bus, but himself. If Stan Kronke does not see this as a problem, then he doesn’t care about winning.

vi suspect it’s a combination of things. some of it is correctable. some of it is the rams receivers need to pay attention. part of it is maybe coaches need to hold the players accountable.
as far as what goff brings? i think he’ll make more mistakes than keenum will this season. but i also think he’ll balance that out somewhat by making some pretty amazing throws. throws that will make us stand up and think to ourselves. damn. no way case makes that play.
and then hopefully by next year. he eliminates more of those mistakes. and makes more of those eye-popping lasers. that’s how i’ve imagined it anyway. and if this world is indeed nothing more than a simulation then the matrix will listen to my prayers and make this an actuality…
can you hear me, internet!!!

in the back of my mind. there is this worry that the players have tuned fisher out.
i must admit.

I don’t see that happening. At all. Unlike some of us, the players wouldn’t blame him for everything. But that’s just my version of guessing/mindreading to balance your version.

I’m saying that Fisher is deflecting blame off himself. Fisher is basically saying he didn’t do anything wrong.

me personally i don’t worry that the players would be angry with fisher or retaliate or blame him.
i’m more worried that they’re a little too comfortable with fisher. i wonder if there’s accountability.
but then where does that come from? does that come from the coaches from the players? i think at least it has to start with the head coach. i don’t know. but even then. belichick had his brady. john harbaugh had his ray lewis. dick vermeil had marshall faulk.
who does fisher have? it can’t just come from the head coach. who’s the leader on the team? who’s going to hold his teammates accountable?

Show me examples of coaches who do say they did something wrong.
See, fans have this weird idea that (1) what’s in their heads must be real, (2) therefore the coach must see it that way too, and (3) therefore if he doesn’t say it he’s deflecting blame.
I don’t know why you have this thing that says, basically, he must be accountable to me, which means, he must say what I personally think is true or he’s evading it.
The reality never works that way.

Man that is wrong always going to the fans are wrong schtick. Its not the fans fault this team is showing a 6-10 reality in week 7. Perhaps Snisher should accept the reality that the clusterfluck of a performance is really their fault. It might lead to real positive change. Like an 8-8 season!
The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.
Sprinkles are for winners.
October 24, 2016 at 12:56 pm #55986Eternal RamnationParticipantQuote from John Robinson “Well, as the Rams’ only spokesman these last nine years, it’s my job to announce to you that I have submitted my resignation, and it has been accepted,” Robinson said.
“It was a situation of mutual arrangement. Rams management and myself felt it was the right thing and the right time for this to happen. We’ve had a good nine years. Unfortunately, the last two years we have faltered. This year, particularly, was difficult for us. We tried to make a lot of changes in the football team, and we just didn’t get it done.”
Robinson, 56, leaves as the winningest coach in team history with a 79-73 record and six playoff appearances in his first seven seasons.

Even if it was on Quick, and I’m not so sure it was, what is he talking about bench a WR before he benches a QB?
Which WR is he gonna bench?
Quick has been having a great year and was lights out against the Giants, sans what he’s being accused of. You don’t bench a guy that is actually helping your team. Quick is a handful for the defenders and is actually catching the ball.
Britt is on pace to have over 1,000 yards are you gonna replace a legit #1 receiver and keep a back-up QB on the field?
Tavon just signed a 40 Million dollar contract then you bench him? I don’t think so.
Maybe he’s gonna bench Spruce and Higbee…that’ll show everybody.
October 24, 2016 at 8:21 pm #56017InvaderRamModeratorfor me. and part of this is probably insanity talking.
it’s not about benching players cuz i think we’ll magically improve this year.
it’s about the realization that the offense as it is now is not going to cut it.
i’d bench keenum not because i think goff will be better than case this year. but that in time he will eventually be better. and what better way to get a leg up on next season than starting him now so he can get some experience. WITH THE ASSUMPTION that he looks ready enough. if he isn’t then no. don’t throw him in with the risk that he get himself hurt physically or mentally.
and if i bench quick or britt it’s because i want a better look at how cooper and spruce look. and obviously there will be lumps. but i like their mental makeup. cooper is a former high school qb. spruce is technician. a guy who has maximized his ability. their mental makeup i’m gambling will be better for the rams in the long term than britt and quick – who haven’t impressed me beyond their physical skills. now obviously the coaches see these guys everyday so if they’re not ready then you don’t play them. but i want to see them get more playing time if they are ready.
and obviously you don’t just bench players and g8ve rookies a starting position but you ramp up their reps in practice and eventually in games.
i had my hopes up for britt and quick but i think they are what they were the last three years and not the last three games.

Well he wasn’t serious about the benching talk. If you heard it, it was delivered as a toss-off remark. He was basically saying, I put more blame on the WRs, that game was not the qb’s fault.
And in fact all 3 guys you name mammothly F’ed up in that game. Tavon led to the pick 6, Britt dogged it on a route where he could have had a long TD, and Quick did not register the signal for the audible, leading him to run the wrong route and give the defense an easy pop-up INT instead of a possible TD.
They played well against Detroit then those three all acted like they had been enjoying london more than getting ready to play.
I would imagine if either Spruce or Cooper were ready you could bench any single one of them.
But again Fisher was not saying that in any serious way. It was, bench the qb? Naw I would bench one of the WRs for screwing up before benching the qb.
Fisher RARELY directly calls out a player in a press conference and in that one he called out both Britt and Quick.
And I agree with him.

You mention 1 play in what 45-55 snaps for each of them? BTW, I only agree with TA Fed up. That miss really hurt the team and he has to haul those in.
I can’t speak on the Britt doggin it thing as I haven’t seen anything on it.
If Quick did miss the signal…well, it’s a new offense for the receivers and a new QB….sure he should catch the audible, but he isn’t the only guy in the world to miss one. Not enough to lose his job IMO and I don’t think he’s gonna.
I can mention a lot more than 1 play CK messed up on.

they more than deserved to get called out. and i will go even further and say they should not be part of any long term plan for this offense.
as soon as spruce and cooper are ready i’m slotting them in. enough of the knuckleheadedry.
