Goff played OK for a first game, but the defense, which is Jeff Fisher’s bread and butter, plays undisciplined, the the last two series. This has been a staple of Jeff Fisher teams, either lead the league or near the league in penalties. Especially, personal foul calls as well. Frustrating.
November 20, 2016 at 8:16 pm #59071znModeratorThe defense has been a difference late in a couple of games too. Clutch plays sealed some Rams wins.
The penalties today were bad, but, the Miami defense is more penalized than the Rams, so…I don’t regard it as THE difference in a season. The 5 most penalized defensive units (before and not counting today) are
1 Miami Dolphins 44
2 Jacksonville Jaguars 39
3 Los Angeles Rams 36
4 Denver Broncos 36
5 Philadelphia Eagles 32Notice 3 teams there with winning records. So is it a be-all and end-all?
Having said that, I agree the defensive penalties were the difference in THIS game though.

I’m not talking about the teams penalties as a staple for his years here.

And everything I said about this year applies to the other years.
Jack, aggressive defenses get penalized more. That’s been true of both Denver and Seattle, for example.
There is no strict correlation between defensive penalties and losing. There just isn’t. You may be pissed at this one game and how the penalties worked this time. Okay. Me too. BUT it is simply not true, meaning (to emphasize) that there is absolutely NO truth to the idea, that you can line up numbers of defensive penalties with winning or losing.
And you don’t have to (plus can’t) win this particular fight. Doesn’t matter, because you can STILL say “I don’t care I don’t like Fisher anyway.”

November 20, 2016 at 9:25 pm #59086nittany ramModeratorWell, I didn’t see the game, but I find it difficult to blame a defense for a loss after giving up ZERO points through three and a half quarters when their offense can only muster 10 points through four.
This team has its weaknesses but defense isn’t one of them.

Well, if you did see the game, in fact the defense DID lose it. When the rain stopped and Miami could throw–that’s late in the game–the Rams committed a series of bad penalties that basically handed the Dolphins the win late.
They did play well before that.

Perhaps the defense collapsed at the end but it’s not their fault that 14 points was all that was needed to win this game.
We should expect a victory when up by 10 pts with only 6 minutes left but protecting a lead is the responsibility of the defense and the offense.

Well that’s true in general, from an on-paper POV. IMO.
In actual fact, the way the game worked, a cascade of late defensive penalties lost the game.
You can also expect a defense to hold a 10 point lead late. And not give up 14 points in 6 minutes with the game on the line.
And then think of the levels of difference here.
1. They would have won the game IF: the Rams offense were not struggling as it has been for most of the year (with a bounce up in games 3-6).
2. When the Rams defense needed to keep Miami in check to secure the win after not allowing a single 3rd down conversion all game, they chocked and gave them free drives with very stupid penalties.
#1 means, fix the offense. Which won’t happen in a week.
#2 means, come on we’ve seen you win those this year, do not lose your cool in that situation.
So in my own entry in the informal poll, I stick with the “defense lost the game” vote.

Busy watching the Seattle game, huh.
November 22, 2016 at 3:10 pm #59224HerzogParticipantPenalties are bad. I can kind of buy the notion that good defenses are penalized more. Still, I remember DV having good defenses without the high penalty count.
Stupid penalties are inexcusable.
I am angry

Yes, not because I have to but because I like to keep an eye on our enemies.
You, on the other hand, as founder and president of The Official Pete Carroll Fan Club are obligated to watch.
November 22, 2016 at 3:27 pm #59226joemadParticipantPenalty Breakdown:
URL = http://www.footballdb.com/stats/penalties.html?sort=numpen
RAMS:
1st in delay of game penalties (at least Goff didn’t get flagged for that on Sunday)
4th in false starts penalties (once again the Rams opened up the game with false start)No excuse for the above mention penalties. None, unless the refs spots the ball late for delay of game.. otherwise, no excuse.
I defense of the defense on the last drive, those very questionable calls on Aaron Donald, IMO should not have been called.
