Easley will have a MRI on his knee. He tore his ACL in 2013 and source said that history is “worrisome.”

#Rams DL Dom Easley suffered what is believed to be a serious knee injury, sources say. He has an MRI tonight. “Not looking good,” one said.

In college at #Florida, DL Dominique Easley tore ACLs in both knees. Doing it a third time would be rough for the #Rams DL.

Aaron Donald is holding out, and now Dominique Easley may be injured. Here’s Sean McVay, on whether he’s getting concerned about the depth on the Rams’ his defensive line.

With Aaron Donald already out, Rams lose starting defensive lineman Dominique Easley to injury

IRVINE — The Rams’ situation at defensive line, already tenuous because of the holdout of star Aaron Donald, took an ominous turn Tuesday when Dominique Easley had to be carted off the field.

Easley apparently hurt his knee during an 11-on-11 drill during training-camp practice at UC Irvine and never put weight on the leg. Easley needed help as he hobbled a couple steps to an electric cart, and both Coach Sean McVay and defensive coordinator Wade Phillips came over to check on him.

McVay said he didn’t have an update on Easley immediately after practice, but Easley was scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday evening. Easley suffered two ACL tears while in college, most recently in 2013. A team source on Tuesday called Easley’s previous knee issues “worrisome.”

The Rams already have been somewhat thin on the line, as Donald’s contract holdout reached its fourth day, and now the Rams could be without two of their three starting defensive linemen in coordinator Wade Phillips’ new 3-4 scheme.

Easley, signed as a free agent before the 2016 season, played all 16 games last season as a reserve and had 35 tackles, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Easley had been expected to move into a starting role this season after former end Robert Quinn moved to linebacker.

Louis Trinca-Pasat took Easley’s first-team reps for the second half of Tuesday’s practice. Trinca-Pasat’s 2016 season ended during OTA practices, when he tore his ACL and MCL and missed the entire season.

The Rams also lost receiver Tavon Austin during practice Tuesday, to a leg injury of unknown severity. McVay said he believed Austin’s problem might only have been a “minor tissue issue.”

The Rams are down to just one member of their starting defensive line: Michael Brockers. Aaron Donald is holding out, and now Dominique Easley has a knee injury that will require an MRI. The depth behind them doesn’t look great, either. You have to wonder if something like this will give the Rams even more incentive to get something done with Donald, though it’s usually best to handle negotiations like this in a vacuum.

Easley, who was carted off the practice field with a knee injury Tuesday, has suffered a torn ACL and is expected to miss the entire 2017 season, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports.
Easley was projected to compete for a starting spot on the Rams’ defensive line after a career season in 2016, when he racked up 35 tackles, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. It’ll be a daunting road to recovery for the 2014 first-round pick, having torn both of his ACLs during his collegiate years at the University of Florida. With Aaron Donald currently holding out for a new contract, the Rams’ defensive line unit may lack experience throughout the early stages of training camp.

So who will the Rams look to in order to fill the void? McVay sounded like there will be a lot of competition between the inside pass rushers.

“You see guys like Ethan Westbrooks. I think it’s going to make Michael Brockers that much more important not only in base, but in some of those sub packages that we’re running. You look at a guy like Tanzel Smart. I think it opens up the door for Louis Trinca-Pasat — a lot of guys that have done some good things,” McVay said. “But now they’ll get an opportunity to compete with some of our guys that we’re expecting to start, and we’ll see how they do.”

The way I read it, he mentions Westbrooks first.

    But Westbrooks is the DE.
This has to do with the 3-tech spot opposite Westbrooks.

See originally Easley was the starter at DE, and he was filling in for Donald at 3-tech and Westbrooks took DE while Easley did that.

So DE is set now with Westbrooks, so the issue is who plays 3-tech until Donald comes back. That looks to be T-P and Smart.

Both of whom btw can play different spots on the DL so they are both idea depth that way for when Donald returns.

Ok, that is the asymmetrical Dline stuff. I thinking the other way. (DE-DT-DE)/(LDE-NT-DT)

With Donald it will be the norm to have a DE on one side and a 3-tech on the other. That will be the base D.

    DE – NT – 3-T

So I assume that in his absence, Westbrooks takes the DE spot (which is now apparently his for the season) and whoever subs for Donald in the meanwhile (T-P, Smart) will line up as a 3-tech.

So if we’re asking, what does the Easley injury do, in the short run it means you line up T-P and Smart at 3-tech.

Ok, but the original plan was Easley, Brockers, Donald. Now it is Westbrooks, Brockers, (T-P, Smart). So when Donald comes back, what will it be?

    Right.

    Original:

DE Easley NT Brockers 3-T Donald

    Donald out:

DE Westbrooks NT Brockers 3-T Easley (until AD returns)

    Easley out:

DE Westbrooks NT Brockers 3-T T-P/Smart (until AD returns)

I think it remains that way with Donald back. Westbrooks is the DE.

I think the confusion comes from the fact that the reporters only really care about who replaces Easley at 3-tech, I don’t think they thought much beyond that. But it is true as I said that this new configuration now puts Westbrooks permanently at DE.
