Do you have workout routines? Weights, ab-rollers, bikes, yoga, tap-dancing,
ballet, synchronized-water-boarding….changing channels without the remote…anything?

I do a little hiking, a little light-weight work. I play with my ab-roller sometimes.

Every single year of my life, i have looked in the mirror and said these words:
“This year I’m going to get into the best shape of my life”
And i mean it. When i say it. And then….sigh

I get to the gym on a regular basis.

    It’s about 4 times a year.

Oh–and I walk the dog once in a while if I’m really feeling energetic.

My diet is something I take very seriously as well—I like to balance my chocolate frosted donuts with a bag of potato chips. Balance is VERY important.

But I’m 54 and don’t feel a day over 75. Clearly it’s working for me.

MWF and sometimes Sat for me with free weights. Much more dumbbells these days for this dumbbell. I try to walk an hour a day every day when I’m not sick. Can hike an 8 mile day but only with a very light pack due to very unforgiving knees. Just trying to maintain a level of strength to do what I want. I’m 55 and know exactly what you both mean, definitely been there. I’ve messed with free weights most of my life but have to admit the T injections make a big difference in getting the gumption to work out.

The upside to being a Rams fan is heartbreak.

Yeah, i can relate to all that.

My knees are starting to do strange things. They have a mind of their own now.

Damn. This is an old-man thread isnt it. Now we are all gonna complain about our aches and pains 🙂

Once i was in a living-room full of old people. Relatives. Aunts, uncles that sort of thing. And they were all droning on endlessly about their ailments. None of them were listening — just droning on and on about their ailments.

And i swore I would never ever do that.

…and now let me tell you all about my knees… 🙂

I’ve started cycling over the past 5 years. I used to run regularly, but my calves no longer handle it well at all. I still run occasionally, but during the summer I usually ride 5-6 days per week. I lift light weights a couple times per week as well. In the winter I x-country ski. I have a fat (tire) bike now, so I plan to ride that this winter as well as ski.

    105 ? Wny 105 ?

Thats a lot, btw. How many can you do in a row?

I used to be a big ‘pull up’ guy. I liked pull ups. But now, at my age, its tough to get my elbow joints to go along with pullups. But I’m still gonna try and see if i can get my body to go along with them.

I rewatched a dvd of ‘Pumping Iron’ with Arnold and Ferrigno a while back. On the special features they kinda hinted that a lot of the drama was kinda ‘created’ just to add some pizzazz to the film.

someday i’ll add a pull up bar…I’m not sure I can actually do one right now…..my elbows used to get sore and make noises but the push ups actually helped over time….

I do 3 sets of 35 push ups…… I’ll throw in squats, lunges, plank, chair dips for the triceps etc as time permits ….. but as a minimum I do my best to fit in the push ups daily…. push ups can be done almost anywhere……….BTW, I used to do 150 per day (3 sets of 50) but that stopped when I “stroked out” in 2007, ……… when I started playing softball again a few years I re-started the push up routine…….

I also make a priority to walk 30 min in the AM that includes 5 sets of stairs on the walk……….

I exercise regularly. Didn’t always. But, I had to lose weight. I’ve lost more than a quarter of my body weight (60 pounds). I did it because of my cholesterol. And, I just kept at it. I’ve done lots of different stuff, but mostly I’m doing yoga and resistance training … a lot of pushups, mostly. Strength training is great. I don’t do a lot of squats, tough, because my knees are creaky, too. I’m 46 years old, btw. But, I’m in way better shape than I’ve been since my 20s.

I had to build my way up, but I do lots of pushups. I can do 54 at one time. But, mostly I do different kinds of pushups, and several series of them. This morning, I figure that I did between 300 and 400 pushups plus other exercises with a resistance band. Then, I put on some ankle weights, laid down and did some leg exercises. That was over an hour’s worth of work.

But, I can only do that type of workout about twice a week. I do a lot of yoga because it’s great for flexibility and adds strength. Check out this one lady, Yoga with Adrienne, on Youtube. I follow her yoga workouts, and some of them can be really challenging. A 21-minute core workout will tear you up. Or, you can go with a lighter workout that helps mostly with flexibility. Or, anywhere in between.

The great thing about these workouts is that I don’t have to go anywhere to do them, so there’s no excuse not to do them.

A lot of good that will do. That clueless old coot is releasing it in Betamax.

The only exercise I get is when I walk the dogs or go birding…neither of which would qualify as aerobic exercise. I just can’t stand doing those repetitive movements on an elliptical or other exercise machines. I like getting out in the woods and hiking but I’m not motivated enough to do it regularly enough to make a difference.

The only exercised I like is playing something. Raquetball is fantastic, but I don’t have a club membership, and nobody to play with. But I can’t stand Exercising. My brain has to be doing something, or I get bored. Hiking is good, but…yeah. Ya gotta carve out a day for that. I went hiking in Yosemite over the weekend, and it was a joy…but I could only wish I was in better shape.

Get your testosterone checked. If told you are low normal don’t accept it. There is a wide range of what is “normal” or in a better word necessary for each individual. Good luck.

Start with walking. I get my best thinking and planning accomplished while walking. Dedicate a set time then over time see if you can pick up the pace to increase the distance walked in the time allotted. Get good walking shoes too.

That’s good advice, thanks. I used to walk briskly when walking the dog, but the female is over 12 years old now and has a degenerative spinal condition so I don’t want to push her. She gets tired when we just do our typical 20 minute stroll around the neighborhood.

We also have a 10 month old pup. Of course he could handle it if we picked up the pace but that would only work if I walked him without the female. I could do that but the dogs are like children. If one can’t do what the other one is doing at that moment there is all kinds of drama.

See there what I’m doing? Already erecting roadblocks. Being lazy is a lot of work. 🙂

Hmm, I hadn’t thought about adding cussing to my workouts. Maybe i can throw some F bombs in there between sets. Better save that for home, though.

Walking is how I started my weight loss. Because, I couldn’t do anything else. After a while, I was power walking so quickly that my young son didn’t want to try to keep up with me. Then, I threw in running for short periods as I walked. After a while, I was running a mile, then a 5K. I finished 2nd in my age category in a recent 5K.

But, I hate running. If I had to rely on walking/running, I’d never stay in shape. That’s why simple resistance training, even if for just a half-hour, makes a big difference.

I track my calories. That’s what really helped me lose weight. MyFitnessPal is a great app for that. You really have to work at this at first, and then it becomes second nature. You have to weigh your food in grams, so you need to take a little extra time for that. After a while, you know what you’r supposed to eat for your weight and activity level.

After the move to our new house, I got away from tracking food. I was so busy with getting the old house ready to sell and fixing up the new house, that I also got away from regular exercise. I gained back about 10 pounds. I’ve lost some of that recently. It just takes focus. You have to budget time for exercise and be mindful of what you eat.

And, I still indulge at times, so it’s not like I’m losing out on good food. I just eat better, make better choices (most days).

Joe, my man cave is not coming along so quickly. I’ve decided that I’m not killing myself for the house anymore, and we’re saving extra money for vacation trips in the future, something we’ve never done as a family. I figure that I’ll get to the man cave in the next couple years, but it’s fine to use right now the way it is. Besides, I’ve got a pool that I have to maintain all the freakin’ time.
