Bengals defensive coordinator likes the draft’s pass-rush group

    Zac Jackson

Like a lot of teams, the Bengals figure to be in the pass rush business in this year’s draft. Bengals Defensive Coordinator Paul Guenther likes what he’s seen of the group at this early point of the draft process.

“It’s as good a pass rusher draft that I can remember,” Guenther told the team’s official website. “As far as inside guys, outside guys, linebackers, where guys are well schooled with moves and hands.

“You’re just looking for guys that have the traits you’re looking for. You’re looking for guys with a long reach, but they also have to have the quickness and burst, too. [There aren’t] many 6-foot-5, 6-foot-6 defensive ends that can play at a high level. They wouldn’t get to us at [the No. 9 overall pick].”

The Bengals could go a number of different directions with that No. 9 pick, including somewhere on the offensive side of the ball. If they go defense — something for which Guenther will certainly campaign — he said he believes the Bengals could add a quality player at every level of their defense.

“There’s going to be a good player there at No. 9,” Guenther said. “At the top end of the draft there are a lot of very good defensive players. It’s not like one, two, three and then it falls off the shelf.”

rams have needs at secondary, but they also need to bolster the pass rush and run defense in my opinion. there are plenty of athletes here to choose from.

i’d almost rather they go all in on defense this draft.

bolster the offensive line through some cheap fa additions. and address wide receiver by making one big signing – say a pierre garcon. if they could somehow pull off a trade for brandin cooks – even better. and then develop what they have. they have some talent on offense – they’re just young. guys like cooper and higbee and hemingway and spruce. they’re young. can’t give up on them.

but make this defense even better than it was last year. this is the year to do it. they cannot fall into the trap of just drafting offense for the sake of drafting offense.

They could get an OLB/edge rusher, a CB, a FS, a DE, and a WR …all in rounds 2-5.

they totally could do that. that’s how deep this draft is i think.

tj watt. brother of jj watt. so yeah. he’s gonna get hype. but here’s the thing. wade phillips coached jj in houston. that’s one thing. he’s only played linebacker for 2 years. converted from tight end. so he’s raw. but if he’s anything like his brother, he’s going to be a relentless worker. wade’s gonna like that.

he also might drop considering the amount of talent in this year’s class of linebackers and edge rushers.

the only drawback i can think of is his injury history. he’s had problems staying healthy.

    6’4″ 252 pounds
    33.125″ arms
    11″ hands
    40 – 4.69s
    vert – 37″
    broad – 128″
    ss – ?
    3-cone – ?

i’d take him in round 3.

It’s a great draft. It’s definitely missing some components … but overall there are probably 300-350 players who have a legit shot and close to 60 high impact players with pro bowlers on the DE and DB front.

close to 60 high impact players with pro bowlers on the DE and DB front.

this is why you go all in on defense. i think wide receiver can and should get addressed in free agency.

as far as oline this is a weak class.

the only one i’d really consider is the tight end position. just because of the quality this class has.

ok now this is just ridiculous. looked up tj watt’s short shuttle and 3-cone times.

short shuttle was 4.13 seconds. 3-cone was 6.79.

ridiculous. both place him in the top 2 for his position. combine that with his relentless motor. this guy has only been playing his position for 2 years. imagine what he’d look like in 2 more years. and if he’s anything like his brother, he lives and breathes football.

yeah. this defensive class is loaded. one could easily get 4 starters on defense this year without a first round pick. that’s how strong this defensive class is.

tyus bowser is a freak of nature.

can’t post his exact numbers right now.

    but approximately

    6’3″ 247 pounds
    33″ arms
    10″ hands
    4.65 40
    6.75 3-cone
    37″ vertical
    10’7″ broad

this guy has huge upside too. made the houston basketball team as a guard his freshman and sophomore years so he must be athletic.
