Kayvon Webster To Visit Rams
March 10th, 2017 at 9:52pm CST by Connor Byrne

Newly minted Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips might reunite in Los Angeles with one of his former Denver cornerbacks. Phillips’ Rams have interest in free agent Kayvon Webster and will visit with him, according to Troy Renck of Denver7 (Twitter links). The Eagles and Dolphins have also eyed the 26-year-old this week.
Webster entered the NFL as Denver’s third-round pick in 2013 and produced 59 tackles during his first two seasons. Phillips then came aboard in 2015, and Webster’s playing time dwindled during the coordinator’s two seasons at the helm of an excellent Broncos defense. Stuck behind Aqib Talib, Chris Harris Jr. and Bradley Roby, among others, Webster played a meager 58 defensive snaps in 13 games last year. He saw far more action on special teams, where he participated in 253 snaps.
Despite Webster’s limited track record as a defender, teammates in Denver believe he’s capable of starting, notes Renck. At the very least, he’d find more playing time in Los Angeles. The Rams have a couple quality corners in the franchise-tagged Trumaine Johnson and slot man Lamarcus Joyner, though the former is a prime trade candidate. Even with those two in the fold, LA finished 2016 just 20th in the league in DVOA against the pass.

LOS ANGELES — Free-agent cornerback Kayvon Webster is visiting the Los Angeles Rams, and given his ties to new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, he might be a fit.
Webster was a third-round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2013, but spent the last three years playing behind two of the game’s best corners in Aqib Talib and Chris Harris. Webster, 26, has played in only 247 defensive snaps since 2014, tied for 10th among Broncos defensive backs during that time. But the Rams have roughly $15 million to spend on unrestricted free agents after cutting ties with four key veterans on Thursday night and could use more depth at corner.
Webster tweeted Sunday about his forthcoming flight to L.A., which the Rams acknowledged.
The Rams have been shopping their primary cornerback, Trumaine Johnson, who is set to play a second straight season under the franchise tag. But even if they keep him, their depth at the position is questionable. Their No. 2 corner, E.J. Gaines, has been limited to 10 starts over the last two years. Behind him are Lamarcus Joyner, who’s better as a slot corner, a former sixth-round pick who was plucked off waivers, Blake Countess, and two undrafted free agents, Troy Hill and Mike Jordan.
Webster, 5-foot-11, has recorded 64 solo tackles in his career, but 59 of them came in his first two seasons. He barely played in 2015-16, while Phillips ran a Broncos defense that was the game’s best each season. The Eagles and Dolphins have reportedly been interested in Webster, as well.
The Rams also are in need of a starting center and could use more help at receiver, tight end, defensive line, linebacker and safety. But the free-agent market is still in play for them.
“You’ve put a dent in your budget, so you also have to work within the constraints of your budget,” Rams general manager Les Snead said Friday. “But usually after the first couple of days [of free agency], like we’ve had, you take a step back and go, ‘Let’s regroup.’ We had a Plan B, but you also take a step back and say, ‘Was somebody else out there that is still standing that we weren’t expecting and can help us?’ That’s kind of what we’re doing now.”

Cameron Wolfe spoke with free agent CB Kayvon Webster, who mentioned that his visit with the Rams is “going well.”
According to Wolfe, there’s a “decent chance” Webster ends up reuniting with his former DC Wade Phillips and takes on a larger role with the Rams.
All indications have been that the Rams are a serious suitor for Webster and he is likely to end up in Los Angeles, so it won’t come as a big surprise if they’re able to get a deal worked out in the near future.
Troy Renck previously mentioned that some of Webster’s teammates believe he could be a starter for some team and it’s possible that the Rams are willing to give him that shot.
Webster, 26, is a former third-round pick of the Broncos back in 2013. He has played out his four- year, $2,745,800 contract and is currently testing the open market as an unrestricted free agent.
In 2016, Webster appeared in 13 games for the Broncos and recorded eight tackles, a pass defense and no interceptions while being a large contributor on special teams.

LA Rams Sign DB Kayvon Webster
The Rams have added a new member to their secondary.
Joe McAtee
The Los Angeles Rams have signed DB Kayvon Webster to a contract details here.
Webster spent four years with the Denver Broncos after being drafted in the 3rd round (90th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft out of South Florida. The last of those two years, Webster was a reserve for former Broncos and new Rams Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips. Webster’s experience under Phillips should serve him well in the Rams’ secondary rotation.
There is a bit of question as to where Webster will play. He played safety in high school and then moved up to cornerback at USF before staying there with the Broncos. He did offer safety backup skills and was reported to take over for Rahim Moore when he left, but the Broncos ultimately signed former Rams S Darian Stewart to fill the role.
So while he has cornerback experience under Phillips, he also offers stop-gap safety skills. Having lost S Rodney McLeod to free agency last season and looking at S T.J. McDonald likely heading out, there’s room at safety on the roster. At cornerback, the Rams lost CB Janoris Jenkins to the market a year ago, and CB Trumaine Johnson might be traded away as he sits on his second consecutive franchise tag.
With the 2017 NFL Draft in front of us and the full free agent window still open, we may have to see where Webster gets slotted in during OTAs.
For now, there’s a new Ram in the secondary.
March 14, 2017 at 12:55 am #66250znModeratorMarch 14, 2017 at 8:59 am #66260InvaderRamModeratorinteresting. he’s got some ability as a safety. they have some flexibility in the secondary as far as the draft goes now.
just have to sign groy now. get him signed and it’s best te/pass rusher/defensive back.
this draft is so deep on defense. their defense could be even better than last year.
March 14, 2017 at 9:08 am #66261sanbaggerParticipantIt really looks like the Rams are addressing all the needs prior to the draft so they aren’t drafting for need.
They signed Groy to an offer and reports are they are talking with Jarvis Jones to fill that OLBer position that is currently a big question mark.
Safety is still a hole but KWebb can possibly step in, although I am sure they are gonna draft a DB or 2 or 3…maybe they use all picks on DB’s.
March 14, 2017 at 1:52 pm #66276InvaderRamModeratorok i would not be a fan of the jarvis jones pick. i was with the rams up until that point.

he’s a guy who’s been injured and couldn’t produce on a team that seemingly churns out pass rushers.
it doesn’t matter cuz it looks like the cardinals are gonna sign him.

i’m ok with it. signing him and ignoring that position in a draft that’s so strong at that position seems foolish to me. this defense has a chance to be truly great. don’t ignore that just to add another receiver.

I covered him in college…He’s an angry physical dude. If he’s worked on his craft behind those great CBs, he could have real upside.
As far as questions about why he didn’t beat Roby out at nickel… Roby is agile and has quicker feet. That’s Webster’s biggest limitation. He’s not a nickel.

What Broncos fans are saying about losing Kayvon Webster:
http://www.orangemane.com/BB/showthread.php?t=126387
Good for him Wade Phillips knows.
———–
Good for him. Good luck, Kayvon.
———-
Good luck to him but I wonder if he gets any bigger opportunity in LA.Besides losing that is.
———-
Good for him, stinks for us. Good player, valuable on SP, nice depth. We have too many good corners. I would have said Talib would be gone at the end of the year but then he turned in the kind of season he did.
———–
Sucks, I really liked him, thought he showed some talent. Enough to be a 4th CB and ST stud, while challenging for 3rd DB on the depth chart at times.Dude was amazing in the playoffs on ST’s during the SB50 run.
———-
Good for him. The draft is extremely deep at DB. I suspect we will add a CB and a S. The safety class in particular is too good to pass up.
———–
You have to appreciate a guy who sacrifices his body on special teams. Of course, guys just have to do it, if they want to make the roster. But there are some guys who just go all in. He was one of those guys.
———–
Good for him. Kid deserves a chance to be a 3rd or 4th CB in the league.Good draft to find a CB in the 4th or 5th round.
———–
Good spot for Kayvon, the Rams need CB’s and Wade knows him well.
———–
Good for him! He brought it on special teams. Love to see a grinder get rewarded.
———-
He was a great ST player. Wish him the best.
———-
Nothing but love for Kayvon and wish him the best. He put it on the line here and hopefully he gets a chance to start under a DC who knows him.
———–
Man sucks to see him go. Many other people would have let go long before him but I trust in Elway so GOOD luck thanks for SP teams play in the SB
———–
If you’ve read his twitter, he’s RT’d a ton of tweets about wanting to play more.Good for him, i was impressed with Doss in his spot duty.
Kayvon was a monster on ST’s, and pretty good in limited time at CB. We’ll miss him.
———-
I hope Kayvon got paid and I wish him the best!
———–
He deserves a chance to start. The Broncos are just too loaded at DB. Great ST’s player and I feel he’s going to be a great corner for the Rams.
———–
Yep, good ol’ Kayvon. Bet he can find a plethora of cheap nail shops for his pregame pedicures in L.A.March 22, 2017 at 9:28 am #66562znModeratorSuper Bowl experience a ringing endorsement for new Rams cornerback Kayvon Webster
By RICH HAMMOND
http://www.ocregister.com/articles/webster-747130-rams-cornerback.html
Kayvon Webster is a potential starter at cornerback and a special-teams contributor for the Rams, but when Webster signed with the team this month, he also brought something important.
A Super Bowl ring.
A Rams team that hasn’t made the playoffs in more than a decade, and finished 4-12 last season, needs an infusion of winning attitude, and Webster should bring it. Webster, who signed a two-year contract, spent the previous four seasons with Denver and won Super Bowl 50 as a part-time player.
Webster also has deep familiarity with new Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who filled the same role in Denver for part of Webster’s stay.
“When I was on the Broncos, I had the chance to be around a bunch of great guys,” Webster said Tuesday on a conference call with local reporters. “It’s not going to be hard to transition to somewhere like the Rams, because of the professionalism that was on the Broncos. It kind of rubbed off on me.”
The Rams expect Webster, who played in two Super Bowls with the Broncos, to bring leadership and experience. The question is whether he’s ready to become a full-time starter at cornerback.
Webster, 26 and listed at 5-foot-11, 198 pounds, primarily was a special-teams player during his four seasons with the Broncos. He appeared in 54 of a possible 64 games but started only two on defense, both in his rookie season, which also is when he recorded his only NFL interception.
That doesn’t mean Webster isn’t ready for more. The Broncos had, during that time, an impressive group of cornerbacks that included, at different times, Aqib Talib, Chris Harris, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Champ Bailey.
Webster played when and where he could, which also helped him develop as a cornerback who could cover receivers on the outside and also play in the slot.
“I just had to kind of take a back seat and learn,” Webster said, “and just kind of take my opportunity as it came, whether it was on special teams or whatever. I had to make sure I was on top of my game. It’s kind of hard when you’re in that role, because you’ve got to know all these spots, and you’ve got to be ready if somebody goes down. So I think I’m ready for that role and I’m just ready to play football.”
It’s clear the Rams, and new Coach Sean McVay, wouldn’t have signed Webster without Phillips’ approval, so the defensive coordinator must believe Webster can contribute immediately.
Phillips’ aggressive 3-4 defensive system puts an emphasis on solid play from the secondary, and while Webster said he is open to continuing to play on special teams for the Rams, he wants to be a starter at cornerback.
That’s possible. The Rams have a clear No. 1 cornerback in Trumaine Johnson, but then the position opens up. E.J. Gaines is talented but prone to injuries. Lamarcus Joyner is effective, must mostly as a nickelback. Troy Hill and Mike Jordan had good moments in 2016 but largely are unproven.
So, Webster has a chance. He has experience, familiarity with Phillips’ system and, perhaps most importantly, a background of winning.
“I bring leadership and hard-working ability,” Webster said. “In order for us to win, we’ve all got to be a family. Put away the selfishness and put the team goals first, before the personal goals, because once you put the team goals first, you will reach all your personal goals.”
