Dallas game reactions

The defense played good in the second half.

Just saw Wade Philips do the breakdown in the locker room post game. Gotta be the funniest post game locker room video I’ve seen.

Anyway, what an incredible win. Damn if this team isn’t getting me to start believing. That first half was just what I expected. That second half was nothing like I expected.

I will add this to emphasize the head-scratching fact the Rams have an offense:

Dallas scored 4 TDs and a FG today. That should be enough to win the game. I don’t know what the average score is in an NFL game, but 31 has to be above average. The Rams outscored them anyway.

The reached the end zone a disappointing two times, but the put together a lot of drives, obviously. They scored on nine drives.

We would all love to see them hit the end zone more frequently, but…damn…nine scoring drives.

I find the use of Tavon as a back up RB to spell Gurley interesting. I know he was used there occasionally under Fisher, but it appears that it will be a more regular feature this season. He had some good drive extending runs today.

rob havenstein should get some love too for having to deal with lawrence. gave up 1 sack, but otherwise goff had time.

They brought Short into play the NT and moved Brockers to DE/DT, whatever call it. Brockers, Short, Donald or Donald, Short, Brockers, instead of starting with Westbrooks, Brockers, Donald.

This suggests they have problems with Westbrooks.

Of course the DE opposite Donald was originally supposed to be Easley.

Could be or they just liked Brockers there better than Westbrooks to get a bit more pressure and/or that sort of line up also gave them a bit more in the run defense?

Not sure about Quinn. I haven’t seen the old Quinn yet.

this was probably obvious to everyone but me. but the whole time i kept thinking mcvay in washington centered his offense around reed. then they draft everett. and i was thinking he was going to try and run the same offense he did at washington.

but it should have been obvious to me that he was going to base his offense around the most talented player on his new team, todd gurley. and todd has taken that role and really flourished. he’s just a complete back now. all three downs. running, catching, blocking. whatever. and i’m sure mcvay will keep giving gurley more and more responsibility, and gurley seems ready to accept more responsibility. it’s fun to watch. mcvay must be licking his chops trying to find more ways to get gurley the ball.

Seems to me that McVay is smart enough to see what he has, and use it.

I think he drafted Everett to give him that weapon, but Everett is a rookie. Wait and see how he uses him later this season, or next season.

In the mean time, he has other weapons that are effective. He will get around to the TE when the TE is ready.

Yeah, if Gurley gets this many touches per game, he won’t have a long career.

is Dunbar going to play this year?

I watched the game on replay, tonight. I had wondered how McV’s offense would look against a team like Dallas that knew McV very well, and had three Ram games to study as well.

I was quite pleased with how the Rams offense looked. Dallas stopped Watkins and Woods for the most part, but Gurley just kept gashing them.

I thought sure Dallas would force at least one Goff INT — but no. The kid, on the road, did not give the game away. He ‘distributed’ the ball, to use McV’s term, and ‘managed’ the game like a good point-guard. Goff let Gurley and the Oline and Legatron win it. He didn’t try to do too much.

The coaching has been talked about endlessly and everyone already has McV in the Hall of Fame — and i concur 🙂

The OLine was a thing of beauty. Just gorgeous.

Each game Goff gets to play, is like…oh, i dunno what metaphor to use, but its like gold in the bank er somethin. Each game he is learning. Growing. You can see it. His pocket footwork and patience were a little better at Dallas than against the lesser-teams earlier this year. Seattle will be another good learning experience for the kid. But each game he is gonna get better. And that’s fun to think about.

Kupp is already a joy. What happens when HE gets all the nuances down. He’s still learning too.

I dunno what the ceiling is for this Defense this year. I’m kinda hoping they can at least be smart and opportunistic. Maybe get gashed a lot but still come up with a few key plays. Just enough. Like at Dallas. Seems like the Saints won a ring with a defense a little like that. I dunno.

Perhaps my favorite play, was something that was not even mentioned on the broadcast. And it only showed up peripherally on the camera. It happened on the big Gurley TD catch. Anybody see it? 🙂
