Could Bills RFA C Ryan Groy follow Robert Woods to the Rams?
Could Bills RFA C Ryan Groy follow Robert Woods to the Rams?
The Buffalo Bills lost their former second-round draft pick and No. 2 wide receiver Robert Woods to the Los Angeles Rams when the 2017 NFL free agency period began on Thursday, but he might not be the only player to seek greener pastures on the west coast.
Buffalo gave the lowest qualifying offer to center Ryan Groy, a restricted free agent, that would pay him $1.797 million for the 2017 season and would have the right to match any offer he receives. However, they wouldn’t receive any compensation if they decided against it.
On Friday, ESPN’s Adam Caplan reported that Groy, who is 26-years old and started seven games for the Bills last season when center Eric Wood suffered a broken leg, has received interest from four teams.

#Bills RFA G Ryan Groy has drawn interest from at least 4 teams, sources said. A few of them said they think he could come in and start. On Saturday, the Rams were rumored to be one of the teams said to have serious interest in the 6-foot-5, 320-pound lineman.
Former Bills offensive line coach Aaron Kromer is now in the same position with Los Angeles, so the connection is there and his familiarity with Groy makes sense.
Groy was solid in relief duty for Buffalo, posting a 97.7 pass blocking efficiency according to Pro Football Focus while not allowing a single sack, surrendering just 10 total pressures.

Lots of chatter about RFA C, Ryan Groy. Had a 97.7 pass blocking efficiency in 2016, no sacks, and his former Oline coach is w/ the Rams. His 79.5 overall grade ranked third among free agent centers, and his appeal is obvious for a Rams franchise that had one of the NFL’s worst offensive lines after investing two high draft picks in running back Todd Gurley and quarterback Jared Goff.
Buffalo would obviously like to keep Groy who provides quality depth behind Wood, but they’re lack of salary cap space could prove to be problematic.
If Los Angeles offers him significant money, he could be the second restricted free agent that the Bills lose in as many years, after failing to match the New England Patriots offer sheet to wide receiver Chris Hogan last offseason.

the pass blocking should prove immensely should they sign him to go along with whitworth.
i hope it happens.

On November 25, 2015 Groy was signed from the Buccaneers practice squad by Buffalo Bills.March 11, 2017 at 6:12 pm #66180sanbaggerParticipantWhat would it take? Think 2.5 mil could get it done? He’s a back-up in Buffalo and maybe they don’t want to go the extra 700K.
If they could get him for around 2.5 for 3 years with 5 mil guaranteed, that would be a relatively cheap signing for a young guy with low mileage and they could still draft a Center….Hmm who could we (I) want.
I’m not opposed to this.

from If Bills want to keep Ryan Groy and Mike Gillislee, here’s what it will cost
If Bills want to keep Ryan Groy and Mike Gillislee, here’s what it will cost
By using the original-round tender on Gillislee, and doing the same on Groy, it would cost $3.594 million, leaving the Bills with just under $21 million in cap space to deal with their own 22 unrestricted free agents, as well as any players from outside the organization they would be interested in (plus their draft picks).
Because of that, the best course of action for both Gillislee and Groy, as well as possibly Schmidt, is to work out a long-term contract that lowers their cap hit, but gives them more guaranteed money in the form of a signing bonus. According to Rapoport, that remains the plan in regards to Gillislee.

The answer really lies with the Bills, if they want to match.

RYAN GROY
WISCONSIN
6’5″
33 1/4″ ARM LENGTH
316 LBS
10 3/8″ HANDS
OVERVIEW
Wisconsin native. Redshirted in 2009. Set a school record by playing all 54 games of his career. Played 13 games in 2010, starting two at fullback. Played 14 games in 2011, starting four (three at left guard, one at center). Started all 14 games in 2012 (12 at left guard, two at left tackle). Started all 13 games at left guard in 2013.STRENGTHS
Terrific size. Very football smart. Plays with awareness. Has enough strength to hold his ground. Can lean and seal when he has an angle. Surprisingly effective pulling and working to the second level. Competes and gives consistent effort. Three-year starter. Respected by teammates and coaches — solid work ethic and character.WEAKNESSES
Needs to develop better hip snap. Average initial quickness, athletic ability and pop on contact. Has heavy legs and tends to bend at the waist. Needs to improve punch and grip strength. Struggles adjusting to and fitting on moving targets.BOTTOM LINE
Big, durable, blue-collar guard who is generally effective despite lacking exceptional physical traits. As a starter, is the type you look to replace, but could be serviceable backup in a slide-protection scheme given his size, intelligence and functional anchor. -
