These close games are nerve racking.
September 10, 2017 at 7:15 pm #74055znModeratorGoff: 21 of 29 for 306, 72.4%, 10.55 YPA, 1 TD, 0 INTs, qb rating of 117.9

September 10, 2017 at 7:33 pm #74059nittany ramModeratorThe lack of a running game is the only disappointment.
Gurley had that same frustrated look on his face he had last year.
Goff was outstanding and the new receivers are as good as we could have hoped.
All alone in first place!

McV is a bust.

September 10, 2017 at 8:11 pm #74068InvaderRamModeratorit’s the colts, so we should take a step back and realize that.
but still. this offense can get better. goff is going to. hopefully now. make strides. hopefully. you’d expect. and he’s not always going to look like he did today. but you expect him to make strides. and he’ll continue to gain chemistry with his receivers. so i’m satisfied. for now.
sonofbum! went against a scrub for a qb. but you can only play who’s in front of you. and they got 2 turnovers for touchdowns. and they’re still waiting for the best defensive player in the world to come back. so. i’m satisfied.

You have to be odd, to be number one.
-- Dr SeussSeptember 10, 2017 at 9:36 pm #74091InvaderRamModeratorto be fair. his team got cold-cocked so hard he probably had no idea where he was.

September 10, 2017 at 10:10 pm #74095TSRFParticipantUnbelievably, every game is going my way, except for this Giants game.
Not sure if my satanic lord has abandoned me, or is just testing me. We’ll see how the second half goes…
September 10, 2017 at 10:15 pm #74096InvaderRamModeratorgotta stop the penalties. gotta get better at running the ball. also. washington has a legit qb playing and some legit receivers to throw to. i just read that reed might have a broken toe though. still. maybe donald should be available next week.
September 10, 2017 at 10:51 pm #74104wvParticipantWell i hate to state the obvious, but you guys need to keep in mind, once the Colts get Unitas back, they are still gonna be favorites to win the Coastal Division.
Ok, so next is the Washington team at LA and the 49ers Away.
The Rams could be 3-0 and still suck. Right?

vSeptember 10, 2017 at 10:54 pm #74105InvaderRamModeratori just want to add that i’m really excited about sammy watkins. he’s been here for for only a month while the other receivers have been here for 4 months or longer. still he caught all five targets for 58 yards. a 11.6 average.
and you figure he’s going to get better as he learns the offense and develops a little more chemistry with goff.
the rams need him and kupp here for a long time. if this offense can be consistent and just get better every game. there’s no reason watkins shouldn’t want to stay here. especially being a young guy in the second biggest media market in the nation.
September 11, 2017 at 12:37 am #74114ZooeyModeratorThe arrow is pointing up.
To overstate the obvious, the Colts are not the same without Luck, the running game looked as bad as last year, their third down conversion percentage was ungood, there was a lot of sloppy tackling, and there were too many penalties bunched up early in the game.
On the bright side, they settled down re: penalties, Gurley was effective catching the ball, the play action worked, the Rams now have several receiving targets, the defense appears to be more focused on takeaways than last year (based not only on the numbers and the 16 points, but also on some attempted strips I saw), and the mid-range passing was connecting. Oh…and Goff had time. Those are all good things, and I think significant improvements.
To state one more obvious observation: it’s only one game.
But…arrow point up.
September 11, 2017 at 12:40 am #74115PA RamParticipantThis game was so much fun I’ll probably watch it again. And maybe again after that.
I’m going to try very hard not to be Mr. Pessimism. I’ll leave that to Nittany. This was a fun win. It was a team with an offense. I liked it.
Having said that–I will say two things: 1.) the Colts truly suck. Still–that’s how you have to win against a team that truly sucks. And they did.
2.) Like Nittany–I’m not pleased with the running game yet. I believe that zn noted in the chat room that the Rams linemen may be better pass blockers than run blockers and there may be something to that. Pass protection was great. Still–even when Gurley isn’t hit in the backfield he seems somewhat tentative approaching the line–a bit uncertain. He may need a gaping first hole to really make things happen(kind of like the Dallas linemen give Zeke)but that is just not going to happen on every play. Instead of diving into the pile and trying to churn his legs for a few yards I’d love to see him cut outside on some of those runs. I don’t know. We’ll see, It’s only one game. The other backs didn’t fare much better so it may not be on Gurley. But we’ll see. They need improvement in the running game.
Okay–enough negative stuff.
This was a great win–a fun win, and will give me a smile and a kick in my step the whole week.
Game balls:
Trumaine Johnson. He set the tone for the game.
Cooper Kupp. He sure doesn’t act like a 1st year receiver. What a STEAL he was in the draft.
Jared Goff. Nice game Jared.
The Rams offensive line. Great pass protection.
Oh hell–give them all a ball.
Great, great win.
#1 on top of the division. I’m enjoying it.

Isn;t it just like your type to not even mention Bert Jones.
…
September 11, 2017 at 1:22 am #74121znModeratorAs people have mentioned, there are still issues with penalties and the running game.
BUT the big difference in this game was the 11-30 yarders they kept hitting seemingly whenever they wanted to. That was their strength. It took Goff getting better, McVay being hired, and acquiring Kupp, Watkins, Woods, and Everett. But being able to hit those turned all those other problems, in this game anyway, into inconveniences.
That’s interesting. Because throwing in that range was a strength of Goff’s at Cal. And it was the strength of the 2016 Washington offense too.
…
September 11, 2017 at 1:43 pm #74163HerzogParticipantFirst, Pagano will be fired soon I’ll bet. You can’t put out a sound bite like that and keep your job.
Second, I think it’s time we think about extending Wade Phillips contract. Give that man a raise.
Third, The pass to Kupp in the endzone was a flash of brilliance. It was a thing of beauty. What I’m liking about Goff is that he throws the ball with adequate force. The ball is placed well, hard enough so that it doesn’t get intercepted, but still not more force than necessary, so that it’s catchable.
Fourth, Kupp is for real.
I really wonder what Jeff Fisher is thinking right now. Snead didn’t bring in a receiver worth a crap his entire time with the team. Soon as he leaves, we get three good ones. LOL
September 11, 2017 at 3:40 pm #74166OzonerangerParticipantGreetings Comrades!
Thought I’d drop in. It was nice to sit down, quaff a few and just enjoy a football game for the first time in years…Maybe the Raiders wipeout. It was even more fun experiencing what opposing fans have done to us…laugh at the ineptitude of the other team.
What I liked…
The offensive scheme. I guess we can forever strip away Jeff Fisher’s Offensive Genius label. See what motion and play action can do? Cooper and Watkins do make a difference, but still.
Goff. Handling the scheme. Dude looked like nothing last year. Decisive, touch balls and he threw some absolute lasers yesterday.
Holy, shit…discipline on defense…I don’t recall any really stupid penalties on the defensive side, which we could count on at least two or three per game in the Fisher era.
Hekker…HEKKER! Dude is the leagues ST Donald.
What I didn’t like…
Even with the new scheme, they’re still struggling with how to utilized Tavon…perhaps it IS him as a route runner.
Gurley…I read an “experts” critique on the line and the run strategy…this guy points out Gurley is way better when hitting the line outside the guards and tackles, not inside which just never seemed to work. I think there’s something to this.
That sequence after the fumble recovery when the line rattled off a string of false-start and holding penalties. We gotta fix that.
That’s about all I have. I cannot wait for Washington, a much sterner test. But that was fun to watch.
September 11, 2017 at 6:12 pm #74185InvaderRamModeratorSecond, I think it’s time we think about extending Wade Phillips contract. Give that man a raise.
yes. whatever it takes. and then he can groom his replacement for whenever he decides to retire.

I almost can’t take the game seriously because the Colts were rudderless and incompetent on offense.
But … there is no denying the presence of an offensive identity and sense of urgency. There is also no denying some of the aggression and opportunism on defense.
The Great
1) Feeling like it might be worth it to be a fan again, rather than it just being a sign of stubbornness and loyalty.
2) Goff. Confidence, quick decision making, trusting his reads, running a hurry up, throwing catchable balls.
3) Quinn getting around the corner fast … was not expecting him to get his “band” back (and it looks about 75% as far as what he got back to)
4) Brockers moving around and eating up blockers.
5) Trumaine and Joyner.
6) Offensive playcalling.
The Good
7) Gurley’s acceleration and footwork. Oh, and his finish at the goal line.
8) Cooper Kupp. Yep. He dropped one and had a penalty so he’s not in the Great section.
9) Sammy. It’s just a pleasure to have a #1 draw coverage and still get open.
10) The Oline providing some time on longer developing routes.
11) Pass plays to Gurley seemed really well designed. From what I saw they were not enough like screens to signal the defense to stop their rush but there was always one extra blocker freed up … was I seeing that correctly?
12) Hekker is a rock star.
13) Oh, Tyrunn Walker plays big. I like him at the 5 tech … not on the nose.
The Bad
14) Run blocking is still not up to par …
15) Run defense was a little scary at times, too.
16) Kayvon Webster plays one series and gets injured?
17) Austin fumbled a punt? Ugh … okay only one more mandatory year, maybe he provides some fireworks on gadget plays.
September 11, 2017 at 9:30 pm #74211InvaderRamModeratorand to think. their best player hasn’t even suited up yet.

September 12, 2017 at 9:45 pm #74265InvaderRamModeratorone thing. quinn looked slimmer and i noticed he’s listed at 250 pounds now.
if true i think it could do wonders for his health as far as his back is concerned.
