Camp Report 8/19/14
Did not practice: Saffold, Person, K. Jones, B. Jones, Hayes, Laurinaitis, Dunbar, Woodard, McGee, Conrath, S. Brown, EJ Gaines
* Laurinaitis and Woodard did some side work with Reggie Scott
* Saffold was dressed and participated in walk trough unit drills, no contact, or team drills
* Mike Person “earned” a day off after 71 snap performance on Saturday
*Dunbar “vets” day off
* Michael Brockers, Brandon Washington, Matt Daniels and Janoris Jenkins return and participate in FULL practiceToday’s Attire: Shoulder pads and shorts Tavon wearing #1
Special Teams: Punt Coverage Units (no gunners)
No changes in personnel
Theme of the Day: Secondary Steps Up!
* In both 7 on 7 & 11 on 11 Secondary had multiple pass break ups, and more than a couple of INTs
* With Gaines, McGee and Woodard all unavailable, Roberson, Reid and Jarrod Bryant saw plenty of reps with 2nd & 3rd units.
* J. Bryant was the star of the practice, with 2 INTs and a PBU* G. Williams introduced his “dime” package with Joyner and McLeod in the slots, with McDonald and C. Davis in the 2 deep safety positions (again, no Gaines)
* 2nd Unit included Joyner and C. Bryant in the slot, with Daniels and A. Cunningham as Safeties
Offense worked on running game, with line split is half, against d-line and LB.
Spent quite a bit of time on screen game:
RB & WR screens
One on one OL/DL: lots of individual battles
* Barksdale vs. Long
* Brockers vs. Robinson
* Langford vs. Joseph
* Westbrooks vs. Hooey (Hooey held his own)7 on 7, 2 minute drill:
Finished with Bradford throwing a dart, in tight window to Bailey in back of End Zone from 15 yards out.
Gilbert to Franklin deep ball to beat Roberson
Observations:
* Christian Bryant seems to be getting his legs under him and is flying around.
* Mo Alexander seems to be thinking less, and just playing
* Cody Davis just makes plays
* Darren Bates took 1 unit reps with both Laurinaitis and Dunbar out
* Langford and Brockers looked good finally lining up next to one another
* starting to wonder what the story is with Wm. Hayes==
Hayes …is mysteriously absent from most of the practices. I know he had 3 different procedures in the off season, but he has only participated in a handful of practices, and even those have been limited. He got in on a few reps a week or so ago, then they backed him off completely again. He was in pads and helmet, went thru stretching, but really didn’t do much beyond that yet again. Unless they are just giving him the benefit of the doubt as a veteran who only needs a couple of weeks to be ready, I just wonder if there’s more to it than that.
[Reid]…looks better than he did the first 3 weeks of camp. But I still think he faces long odds to stick on the 53 man roster. He really needs to show something in the return game, because thus far, he isn’t in the top 6 as a CB.
Laurinaitis did some work on the side with Reggie,, first time that has happened. He was in shoulder pads and helmet, which tells me he is close.
Gaines twisted a knee LAST week, so I think they are just being cautious.

[The OL:]…IMO, based on what I have watched for the past 4 weeks, is they will more than likely keep 10:
Long, Robinson, Wells, Saffold, Barksdale, Barnes, Joseph, Person, Bond, and depending what they decide to do with Jones, either him, or Hooey.
Van Dyk could be cut outright, or put on the Pracitice Squad. Rhaney will either be put on IR, or PS.
Washington’s days are numbered IMO.
Saffold looks fine, and I would guess he will be back at full participation if not later this week, then definitely first part of next week.

[CBs]…Jenkins, Johnson, Joyner, Gaines, McGee and Woodard…not that I necessarily agree, but in terms of reps when they are all healthy, that is how they stack up
I don’t see the UDFA CBs for example, as being anything more than Practice Squad candidates.
Roberson has shown to have good cover skills, but lacks the overall game to be considered anyone who is going to help out THIS YEAR. Reid has come on of late, and has shown a physical side, has made a few plays, but overall lacks consistent cover skills. His best chance to contribute THIS YEAR is to take advantage of the opening in the KR role, and thus far he hasn’t shown to be even close to his former production in that area.
Woodard needs to be on the field to show he has developed. The problem with that is, when he was on the field early on in camp, he didn’t show much of anything.
*
[Daniels]…needs to stay on the field the rest of the Preseason, and show he still belongs. If he can, I think they would prefer to keep him as a 5th Safety, than reach to keep a 6th CB. He is included on too many ST, when compared to Reid or Roberson.
*
[The Nickel]…Keep in mind, Gaines will most likely be in that mix rather than having McLeod step up into one of the slot positions. Leaving McLeod as one of the two deep safeties.
