I agree about how good CJA looked, I don’t think he had one single carry for a loss
But just a caution. ARZ ranks 31st in run defense.
After Sunday’s game, it may have dropped to 33rd.
To give you a sense how bad that is, Rams run D ranks 21st.

but. he also ran for over 8 yards per carry. after only one week with the team.

nittany ramModeratorOne thing I noticed and I think the commentator pointed it out as well…the Rams didn’t stay in 11 personnel almost exclusively like they did prior to this game. They mixed in a lot of other personnel packages.
For example, they seemed to use 2 TEs a lot, which probably helped the running game.
Yeah, I know, since Kupp’s been gone Everette and Higbee have been on the field together a lot, but not as TEs.
Usually when Everette was in the game with Higbee he was the slot receiver (Kupp’s role).
In this game they were both on the field together as TEs. I bet the Cards didn’t expect to see that.
Heading into the playoffs I think McVay will have to continue to mix things up like that to keep defenses honest.

I think you’re exactly right. I’ve been pushing for mixing things up, too, but I’d like to see more than just two tight end sets. They should bring in extra linemen at times. Noteboom, or Allen, or both of them. Go jumbo. Maybe even Suh in the backfield, either as blocker or runner.
Speaking of Suh, I think he had his best game of the season, and looked almost like his old self. Seemed to be having some fun out there too. He’s been a big disappointment, but if he can play like that in the playoffs, take some pressure off of Donald, the Rams D is gonna be a ton better. Johnson, who should have been an All-Pro (Woods was robbed as well), is coming on and really making the secondary viable.
A fun game to watch, and obviously, Anderson was a great pickup. I honestly thought that before Sunday. Was happy they brought him in, though had no idea he’d be that good.
They can safely rest Gurley until the playoffs, and they should. Keep him working out on the sidelines, etc. But don’t play him. Goff shouldn’t play more than the first half next week . . .

As you guys know, I always look for the silver lining, the bright side of life, the sunshine between the rain, etc. etc. . . . so, um . . .

The Rams would be even worse in run defense standings if not for the O being so good this year. Teams mostly had to pass against them to catch up, so they abandoned the ground game. At least some teams did.
That said, it does appear they’ve made a serious effort to fix this in recent games. The D is playing better overall, and better against the run. Just in time for the playoffs.
I like their chances.

I think the Rams need to do what it takes to win next week so they get the first round bye. I don’t want to see Goff come out until/unless the game is well in hand.
Unfortunately, the Bears/Vikings game is also a late game, so the Rams won’t know where they stand regarding the bye prior to their game.

Also, the Rams ran a bunch of jet sweeps again for the first time in forever.
Anderson was unbelievable…although he blew his blocking assignment a couple of times, notably the sack/fumble on the opening possession.
It’s too bad the 9ers couldn’t finish the Bears.
And I saw the last drive. Their QB just threw the game away (literally) on 4th down on their last possession. He could have tucked and run easily for a 1st down, and he threw the ball out of bounds. Like…what?

On Rams unveiling 12 personnel in the Cardinals game
This was an adjustment I hoped to see. I think we should stick with it. Today felt right. Reynolds got some snaps, but the majority of our snaps came with Everett and Higbee. I think Everett is a bigger mismatch than Reynolds.
It’s true that Goff and Everett aren’t synced up and that Everett still makes some mistakes. But the trial by fire he’s getting should push him to get better. There’s no doubting his physical gifts.
TEs were flying off the board in that draft. It was an absurdly good TE draft. I doubt Everett would have lasted much longer. And the rumors were that we badly wanted Evan Engram. It felt to me like McVay wanted to get a gifted TE to run his 12 personnel. After drafting Everett, he realized he had further to go than expected and opted to go with an 11 personnel approach. I was a Kittle guy, but I couldn’t criticize the Everett pick. He was an extraordinarily gifted TE with sure hands. I still think that pick will pan out for us. Although, Kittle would have given us a quicker impact.

More jet sweeps was good to see. So was the downhill running. New RB was unbelievable. Just about a perfect game with the exception of the one blitz pickup early.
Mixing in two tight ends was great to see.

playing in chicago again would not be a good time.
also. watching the game everett looked pretty decent. he’s come on the second half of the season.
my only worry is his ypc is very unimpressive. averaging less than 10 ypc. if he’s to become a bigger part of this offense that number has to go up.

altho it was interesting (great?) to see the rams offense mix it up by going with a lot of 12 personnel groupings @ arizona, the 22 tape has me wondering if the move was more a reynolds demotion than a commitment to a standard 12 personnel scheme… i say this because technically speaking the rams did play a lot of 12 (1 rb, 2 te) last week, but in a lot of cases they simply trotted out their usual 11 sets (groupings) with the only difference being everett filling in as a wr instead of reynolds.
after what appeared to be a break out game vs the chiefs (8 targets, 6 catches, 80 yards, 1 td), reynolds’ numbers looked horrible in the next 3 games (26 targets, 12 catches, 46% catch rate, 0 tds, 2 picks) – add to this everett is much a much better blocker than reynolds, especially in pass pro and downfield, and is also very capable route runner and pass catcher… as a result, seemingly, everett not only played in typical 12 schemes last week, but he also took a lot of josh’s snaps in what appeared to be 11 personnel groupings… hell, everett even had 2 jet sweeps @ arizona.

I would speculate that its kinda both. A bit of a demotion for Reynolds, and a bit of a move toward protecting Goff with a different set, and running better with a better blocker.
Plus maybe its an easier set for CJ to learn, who knows.
