yeah. like i typed in the chat room. losing is not a prerequisite but experience is. mcvay and goff. both young.
even when brady won in his second year. belichick was playoff tested. he had been a head coach for awhile. even as a defensive coordinator, he’d been to and won superbowls.
when roethlisberger won the superbowl, cowher was a veteran head coach.
too much inexperience i think. that and two turnovers. that did the rams in. bad tackling. falcons were laser focused the entire game.
positives. goff flashed. he definitely flashed. some of the throws he made were phenomenal.
bobby woods showed up. what a great signing. donald played well.
but man. hopefully, this is just the start. hopefully, there’s many more playoffs to come in the mcvay era.
January 6, 2018 at 11:50 pm #80025PA RamParticipantLet me start off by saying with all sincerity: I blame Zooey and his crappy California weather.
Hey–it wasn’t ALL his fault.
Pharoh Cooper may want to find a cave and crawl in and cry for a few weeks. What a nightmare for him.
They were always trying to catch up and the Falcons just kept grinding them down.
Yes–I hoped they would win–but I thought it could go either way. Unfortunately they had home field advantage which is no advantage for this team at all.
Very impressed with Gurley and Goff and Woods. That is the core of this team–along with Kupp.
Watkins—-see ya.
The Falcons secondary was very impressive. They deserve some credit. They played a hell of a game. I expect them to spank the Eagles.
Actually–I kind of expect they have a great chance to get back to the Superbowl. They didn’t have the best record but it’s a very talented and well-coached football team. And they had something the Rams did not have–experience.
I feel miserable for Whitworth. Hopefully they get that elusive playoff win for him next year.
I think the Rams will get back to the playoffs next year. And they’ll be better.

January 6, 2018 at 11:55 pm #80026Eternal RamnationParticipantGurley with 2 drops . Watkins with 2 drops Cooper with 2 turnovers not a good effort McVay didn’t call a very good game. Look what Goff did this year , he fixed what he said he would. They’re young and now they’re experienced and know what to expect in the playoffs. I’m disappointed but still happy , the Rams have a good foundation for many years of success . I’d rather be disappointed after a wildcard loss than be out of it in week 11. Oh and Ed Hockaloogy is terrible not one holding call on Alt. and they held for the whole damn game just disgraceful.

I didn’t look up all the exact numbers but.
only 3 2nd year QB’s have won a super bowl (warner, big ben, brady). No rookie QB has ever won a super bowl.
Only 2 first year coaches in the history of the super bowl era have ever won one. (2 in 50 years)
We had a great young team.. but if you really look at it reasonably it almost never happens.
It also makes me realize what a miracle team the 1999 team was.
January 7, 2018 at 6:34 am #80039nittany ramModeratorThe Falcons defense deserves a ton of credit. There were very few instances of Rams receivers running free through the secondary like we’re used to seeing. Watkins had a defender glued to his hip every play.
The Rams’ inability to stop the run when they had to did them in defensively. Not being able to stop it with their base defense forced them to commit extra defenders and the Falcons countered that brilliantly. This opened things up for their offense and allowed them to dictate the game in the second half.
January 7, 2018 at 7:50 am #80041wvParticipantGreat season.
Atlanta is a good team. I wouldnt mind seeing them get a rematch with the Pats.

vJanuary 7, 2018 at 8:28 am #80043canadaramParticipantThe Falcons run game seemed to come to life after Brockers went down. That was a big loss for the Rams D. On other subjects, a reliable TE would be a nice find before the 2018 season and it’s unfortunate that Cooper waited until his first playoff game to have his worst performance of the season. Perhaps the injury he was dealing with played a factor. Only fourteen carries for Gurley? That disappointed me. I know that the Falcons had the ball a lot and Cooper’s errors kept the ball out of Gurley’s hands early, but there were opportunities for Gurley to run more.
Anyway, my expectations were exceeded this year. Hopefully this young team keeps developing and they can adequately deal with the buzz saw that is Jimmy Garappolo.

This is in another thread but worth copying to this one:

In their last 6 games Atlanta’s defense has given up only 16.3 PPG, against Rams, Panthers, Vikings, Saints twice and Tampa Bay. 5 of those games vs playoff teamsJanuary 7, 2018 at 9:56 am #80045nittany ramModeratorQuoting something Wade’s daddy once said after a second consecutive loss in the playoffs… “One year ago, we knocked on the door. This year, we beat on the door. Next year, we’re going to kick the son of a bitch in.”
The Rams knocked on the door this year. Next year they are gonna skip the ‘beating on it’ part and go right to ‘kicking it in’.

I only saw hi-lites. Didnt see the game. Looked like Atlanta just played better.

vPartly. The game-killer was the 2 fumbles on special teams. Put them behind from the start. They struggled to come within distance, and the offense was going against a very tough defense, and the defense was getting dragged down into TOP hell. In a lot of ways it was the Minnesota game again.
January 7, 2018 at 12:21 pm #80050Eternal RamnationParticipantIt looked to me like the offense was playing tight until the end of the 1st half. Goff was off Gurley dropped Kupp dropped Cooper was fumbling . I know McVay said the game wasn’t too big for them but to me it sure looked like it was exactly that. By the time they calmed down Brockers was out and the D couldn’t get off the field the refs were horrible not calling blatant holding down after down on the Falcons .

yeah i really just underestimated how valuable experience would be. in a thread before the game, i commented that only losers say you need to lose before you learn how to win.
i think it’s at least partially true. you don’t necessarily need the experience of losing, but you do need the experience of playing games. it’s ok if the quarterback is inexperienced, but he needs to at least be surrounded by experience. instead you have a 31 year old rookie head coach. a young running back. young receivers.
i think the defense played well enough, but then you had two horrendous errors on special teams, and it was too much to overcome.
the crazy thing is if the rams are able to get to the playoffs next year and win, mcvay will still set a record for youngest head coach to win a playoff game. that’s what the rams were up against.
but hopefully they go into this offseason more determined than ever.
January 7, 2018 at 12:33 pm #80053lyserParticipantRams did not play their best game.
Falcons had a good plan and executed it cleanly. They are going to be a tough draw for anyone in this tournament.

they were focused the entire game. the tackling was crisp. they didn’t make errors. falcons can’t count on teams making those same errors the rams did though.
but yeah. they were definitely prepared.
January 7, 2018 at 4:21 pm #80055HramParticipantIt appeared that the rams inexperience showed pretty strongly on offense until partly through the second quarter. Defense came to play the whole game.
The Falcons were slightly better today imo, but not by a lot. The two turnovers sealed it for them.
Donald was a beast. The new kicker came through.
The rams will be better next year even if they came back with the exact same team. McVay will also be better.
I think they need another Dlineman, linebacker and an OT who can move to the left side in a year or two. If we can’t sign trumaine, we’ll also need a CB.
Might want to draft a QB to groom as future #2.
I sign Watkins, see what happens when he participates in the offseason. I think it will make a positive difference in his game.
Time to say goodbye to Tavon. Not with what we are paying him.

Good season … better than I had hoped for.
Long story short … we weren’t ready and we got beat by a team with experience that played mistake free football. But we have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming years, no matter who we lose to contract craziness.
The Great
1) Robert Woods. I don’t care if we keep Sammy.
2) Three of Goff’s throws made me gasp. we have a lot to look forward to.
3) Hekker. Really … he has made a new part pf the game visible for me.
The Good
4) Kupp’s TD … stable, reliable, TD in the postseason as a rookie. He has that going forward.
5) Wade Phillips D … I hope he stays for a bit.
6) Troy Hill. We’re going to have a lot of turnover in the secondary … he may actually get a decent offer elsewhere …
7) Donald of course …
8) Westbrooks played a really stout game on the nose. I think we need a powerful space eater in the draft … but he’s a nice change of pace. He’s up for a new deal?
9) Saffold is playing lights out football this year … this was his best year.
10) Morgan Fox played pretty stout.
The Bad
11) Offensive playcalling. I knew what we were doing almost every play.
12) The fact that I will never again feel comfortable resting starters in week 17.
13) The overall demeanor of the team.
The Ugly
14) Barron’s missed tackles.
15) Ogletree’s missed tackles.
16) 7 targets to 1 reception for Gurley … what on Earth?
17) Seriously … I feel kinda stupid … How many times did I say “Don’t worry, he’ll get Sammy involved next week.” Why did they have to make me eat my words? How can you have a player on your team with that skill set and consistently not get him involved?
18) Both turnovers on special teams were unacceptable and avoidable. How does the best special teams I’ve ever seen not prepare for this game better?
19) The field conditions.
Overall
Now, let’s see how the staff and players recover. Who stays and who leaves … we have a lot of free agents and a lot of players we could cut to save money. We also have a defensive MVP to sign.
January 7, 2018 at 7:15 pm #80059InvaderRamModeratorwatkins i think is gone. need to spend those dollars on defense. add a couple more pieces on that side, and i think there’s a chance they could be a top 5 defense.
it’s unfortunate cuz i really would have liked to see what sammy could do given a full offseason. but there’s plenty of receivers already on board they can develop. need to bring joyner and trujo back. and they’ve earned a new contract. can’t say that for sammy. i actually think mcvay and snead lose credibility if they keep sammy at the expense of either of those two.
in the draft, go cornerback in the first round. make the secondary great. sign a nose tackle in free agency.
yeah. and on offense goff and gurley along with woods and kupp have to show leadership and work hard in the offseason. get better.
January 8, 2018 at 11:27 am #80077joemadParticipantI think the opening drive of the 2nd half determined the game moreso than the special teams turnovers.
The Rams seized momentum at the end of the 1st half but Atlanta opened the 2nd half with an 8 min drive to take control of the game….
Specially, a missed tackle by Ogltree on 3rd and 9 from ATL’s own 41 yard line on Tevin Coleman. Ogletree read the play beautifully and had Coleman for a brief second behind the LOS but just missed the tackle where Coleman broke free for 14 to keep that time consuming drive alive.
Had Ogletree made that play, momentum stays with LA……. to me that play defined the momentum of the 2nd half.
January 8, 2018 at 1:02 pm #80079OzonerangerParticipantProps to the Falcons. They had a good game plan, got a couple of breaks and didn’t turn the ball over. Did I mention they had a ridiculous time of possession advantage heading into the 4th?
Still, the future looks bright for a team that hasn’t had a number 1 pick in two years. They’ll be back with another title next year. And, no I don’t see SF as a threat until 2019 at least. They opened losing 9 straight for a reason.
January 8, 2018 at 4:30 pm #80083HerzogParticipantThe turnovers were HUGE obviously. I think they are the complete difference. Hekker had them pinned back. Without those turnovers, they might not score. It changes the complexion of the game. The defense got worn down FAST. They ran so many plays. You just can’t do that to a defense.
Yet I digress.
Once the complete and total pain goes away, I’m sure I’ll be happy with this surprise season.
