Chargers expected to exercise option for L.A. move, sources say
by Eric D. Williams, ESPN Staff Writer
SAN DIEGO — Barring a miracle, the San Diego Chargers are expected to exercise the team’s option to move to Los Angeles in 2017, sources told ESPN’s Jim Trotter.
During the NFL owners meetings in January, in which the league approved the relocation of the Rams to Los Angeles, the Chargers were granted the option to relocate to L.A. with a deadline of Jan. 15, 2017.
Chargers chairman Dean Spanos has to alert the league that he intends to exercise that option by next month’s deadline.
The Chargers received only 43 percent approval on Measure C in November. The team’s $1.8 billion plan proposed raising hotel taxes from 12.5 percent to 16.5 percent to secure $1.15 billion in bonds to help pay for the stadium project.
The citizens’ ballot initiative required two-thirds of the voting public within city limits to approve the project, an extremely high bar for the team to reach.
“Dean has said that he wants everyone to be able to focus on the remainder of the Chargers’ season, and so [he] won’t be making any final decisions until after the season is over,” said Mark Fabiani, the point person on the stadium situation for the Chargers. “That hasn’t changed.”
The Chargers have a tenant-lease agreement with Rams owner Stan Kroenke that lowers the team’s risk because they do not have to borrow money for construction of the $2.6 billion project.
The Rams and Chargers would jointly share revenue such as naming rights, suites, sponsors and advertising. The teams would be on their own to sell season tickets and personal seat licenses.
Kroenke has motivation to complete a deal with the Chargers, because he cannot begin selling personal seat licenses until reaching a decision on whether the Chargers or Raiders will relocate to Los Angeles.
However, the risk for Spanos is that the franchise would be on the hook for a $650 million relocation fee paid over 10 years, determined during the January owners meeting in Houston.
The Chargers also would have to purchase land and construct a practice facility, which would cost tens of millions of dollars.
NFL owners discussed the Raiders moving to Las Vegas during a committee meeting in New York in November. Raiders owner Mark Davis has told the league he plans on filing for relocation to move his franchise to Las Vegas in January.
The Raiders’ and the Chargers’ stadium situations will be up for discussion at a December NFL owners meeting in Dallas.

December 2, 2016 at 8:33 am #59977sanbaggerParticipantI still wouldn’t rule out Spanos getting a deal done to refurbish Mission Valley. He still owes 50 mil from a previous upgrade and as the article stated would owe 650 mil for a relocation fee.
Everybody knew the downtown proposal was gonna get shot down and THIS IS MY SPECULATION…..he could have been leveraging to get a deal done to fix MV. I’ve been to that stadium and didn’t think it was anywhere near being considered a dump. They have a very loyal fanbase and the support of all the casinos in the area.
I’m just sayin it isn’t a done deal yet and with January comin fast Spanos had to make his intentions known.

That’s fine with me… The Lakers have been a mess and haven’t won more than 27 games per season since Dr. Buss passed away… The Clippers have been a consistent playoff team the past 5 seasons…..
But watch out……, the Lakers are currently better than Kronke’s Nuggets….

Well, I’m referring to the historical/overall respective relationships of LA with the Lakers and Clippers. I don’t want the Rams to end up being second chair in LA, regardless of their record. Of course, the only way to guarantee that won’t happen is if the Chargers stay in SD or move elsewhere which is completely out if the Rams’ control.

vIDK…to me Oakland is Raider land..if only they could get a stadium deal done because really they have a much worse situation than the Chargers stadium wise.
Cards back to STL…agree
LA remains Rams…agree

Oh believe me, wv knows that, sanbagger.
As a long time 49’ers fan, wv is well aware of Oakland’s love of the Raiders.
And with his beloved team 1-10 and now 45 miles away in Santa Clara and the Raiders a Super Bowl contender, he senses the Frisco area switching their allegiance to the Silver and Black (note that I said ‘Frisco’. wv, like most San Franciscans, hates that. I get my digs in where I can).
That’s why he wants the Raiders to move. He knows putting an expansion team in Oakland will take a long time to approve. It will take longer still to field a winner. In the meantime local support will undoubtedly swing back to the 9’ers. Unlike the Raiders, an expansion team won’t be a threat to the 9’ers’ sovereignty in the bay area.
So, believe me, he cares little about fair play or justice for other cities that lost their team. He cares only about one thing, the 9’ers maintaining their hold over the greater San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose/Santa Clara metroplex.

December 2, 2016 at 5:37 pm #60032JackPMillerParticipantIf I were Spanos, an I had to move, I would consider moving to Mexico City, in Mexico. It expands the market. The Chargers basically would own the Country, as they are the only sports franchise south of the border, from the 4 major sports leagues. Just a thought. Those fans are very knowledgeable as well.

I agree Invader. I’m sure it has to do with the dollars but it sure comes across as the big boy version of “I want a new bike too”.
Never made it to STL to catch a game. The wife and I almost took a trip 1 year but decided on a different adventure…I kinda wish I made the trip because now it’s not gonna happen.
I was in San Diego while the Rams played Miami in LA and really had no desire to make the trip…maybe when they get the new stadium I’ll be more interested.
