All of this, naturally, and but of course, is IMO.
But.
We have seen him play poorly for a half or so, and then have games where he settles down and stays within the “script” (which is basically, drop and throw and stay within the gameplan. Meanwhile the Schott gameplan always–always always–programs in “game specific” big plays. The qb is just supposed to set those up and then execute.)
So, is this a rebound game? Or is he just not the same player without Quick?
You don’t have to be everything he isn’t to win in the NFL if (a) you as a qb have other things too, and (b) if the whole game is not on your shoulders.
But he has to be under control and non-self-destructive.
Now another question is, can he become consistent? Instead of this confident and in control one game, a mess another game.
But one game at a time.

I try to be as objective as I can in my first post in this thread.
BUt this is a complicated issue and I have mixed feelings.
Personally, I don’t like the idea of this season becoming the “see if Davis can play project.”
I am very “win now.” They have the future in which to figure out the future. Or to put that more narrowly, they have the off-season to figure out the next season.
If it were me and he falters again, I would just start Hill. I wouldn;t even hesitate.
From what I saw of Hill in this offense, he can play, and his strengths as a qb are pretty much the opposite of Davis’s weaknesses.
It is fair and realistic, I think, to ask if AD can rebound.
But. My “win now” attitude also has me wary of that. So he doesn’t have too long to prove he can, in my book.
November 5, 2014 at 6:17 pm #11271sdramParticipantI hope so. But, like others stated, I think the OL play and run game is a huge part of that being a possibility.

November 5, 2014 at 6:29 pm #11273TackleDummyParticipantWithout playing in any regular season NFL game before this season, Austin Davis this year in 8 games is 163 completions out of 254 passing attempts (64.2%) for 1785 yards (7.0 average). He has 11 TDs and 7 INTs. His passer rating is 87.8.
Doubling everything he would end the season with 326 completions out of 508 attempts (64.2%) for 3570 yards (7.0 average). He would have 22 TDs and 14 INTs. His passer rating would still be 87.8.For comparisons, Sam Bradford in his rookie year, 2010 was 354 completions out of 590 passing attempts (60.0%) for 3512 yards (6.0 average). He had 18 TDs and 15 INTs. with a 70.5 passer rating.
So it would seem to me that Austin Davis is on track for a slightly better year than Bradford had as a rookie.
And yet there are people who think Austin Davis has reached his ceiling. That he cannot improve. That he might not be able to “come back” after what they consider a sub-par game. This is the same Austin Davis who went from being cut a year ago to becoming the starting QB this year and producing numbers like our former NFL offensive rookie of the year. Really? He has shown he has the ability to improve his game greatly. He has shown a great work ethic in doing so. And people are already ready to write him off after only a half of season.
SORRY, I JUST DON’T GET THE LOGIC (OR LACK THEREOF).
I don ‘t know where Davis’s ceiling is. But I am pretty sure he has not reached it. Nor will he reach it this year and probably not next year. He will keep improving for a while yet.
November 5, 2014 at 6:37 pm #11274InvaderRamModeratorthat’s the thing with me. we know what hill’s ceiling is. and it’s not a long-term starting qb. with davis we still don’t know. the league has made adjustments. rams need to figure out if davis can adjust. to me it’s worth it to see if he can. fisher is thinking the same thing which is probably why he named him the starter for the rest of the season. what i personally want to see is davis games 12 to 16. that will say a lot about what kind of qb he can eventually become.

Yeah, i agree with that.
I dont think Fisher is playing Davis just to
“see if he can play.” Fisher is always in
win-now mode it seems to me.If AustinD sucks again next week,
i think Fisher will switch.
Though, i’m not sure its a good thing
to be the QB that gets to start against Denver.w

Well, when Fisher made that statement AustinD was
looking purty good, i think. He aint looked
good in a while, and it dont look like he’s
improving to me. Looks like he’s got limitations.I no longer think he can be “the guy.”
He’s certainly not a ‘bum’ though. He’s
fiesty, and hangs in there, and can
spin around and extend plays and make some
throws. But when he has to stay in the pocket
he’s startin to remind me of Pat Haden,
who was also fiesty and a gamer, but not
“the guy” cause he had limitations.w

Yes, he’s played tough defenses,
without Quick. And no-one can tell the future, so, sure,
maybe he will end up improving and being a
good starter. But my eyeballs have made me skeptical.
Sure looks to me like teams have figured out
what he does best and they’ve taken it away.
I no longer think he will turn out to be
a quality starter.
But who knows.
I hope he turns out to be the next
Kenny Anderson. At any rate, if the rams can
rush the passer and run the ball
they can win with a decent
“game manager-QB”w

November 5, 2014 at 9:00 pm #11296znModeratorAnd yet there are people who think Austin Davis has reached his ceiling. That he cannot improve.
That’s because, TD, different people look at this differently, and therefore compare their different views.
Why is it possible to imagine that he will not improve? Because the VAST majority of qbs drafted after round 3 don’t…no matter how well they started out. That’s just the nature of the league. I can’t do the numbers on UDFAs, but I just did the numbers on qbs drafted after round 3 from 2003-2012, and of all the qbs taken, only 4% ever even ended up becoming consistent journeymen types (it’s Orton, Cassel, and Fitzpatrick). Does the occassional Warner or Bulger or Trent Green come along? Sure, but it’s rare. Like..VERY rare.
And it’s not just that realistic odds are against him. I see him as declining in how he plays, so that any statistical averages mashing the earlier games in with the recent games strike me as hiding more than they reveal. I think AVERAGE season numbers on him disguise the fact that RECENT numbers on him are very bad.
And most importantly, my skepticism is based on what I see in his play. He has me very much doubting him. There are a set of “either he has it or he doesn’t” characteristics I look for in qbs, and he is starting to look like he has a list of “doesn’t”s.
And. You approach the whole thing differently. You see and count different things. Cool.
So we create neutral zones like this where different opinions are welcome and the fact that people see it entirely differently is just part of good discussion.

Apples and oranges. There is a huge difference in the quality of players (and coaches) that Bradford had around him his rookie year compared to what Davis has now.

I thought the Seattle game was pretty revealing,
and interesting. I mean, AustinD completed, like
18 of 21 or somethin like that, but they were
almost all dinks and dunks. Fisher reigned him
in. Didnt trust him to throw it downfield. Now maybe they can win with that formula,
sometimes, or even often, but i dont think
thats how the gameplan would have looked
if Bradford had been in there.I’m concerned that the Rams cant count
on Bradford or AustinD to be ‘the guy’
in the coming years.I guess we’ll see.

vNovember 6, 2014 at 5:37 am #11316Eternal RamnationParticipantMy take is a little different.(shocking aint it) I saw the 9er game as a rebound from the KC game.Davis took a beating in that game and the 9ers got him to a lot in the first game. He came out and panicked he did, that is clear. But you know what Britt didn’t quit on his route his OL battered and bruised as it was didn’t quit on him either. The D that had disintegrated several times in the second half didn’t falter. They, the whole team had his back, they want him at QB. On Hill he has way way way more experience and I think he reads Defenses better but arm strength is at most a wash ,mobility isn’t even close and durability,Hill’s carted off the field in KC. Hill is old and nowhere near the athlete Davis is.
November 6, 2014 at 7:42 am #11318canadaramParticipantMaybe he’ll rebound, I don’t know, but I doubt he shines against Arizona’s defense. I think he’s going to have a lot of pressure coming right up the middle. If it’s a Seattle type game plan with a lot of “long handoffs,” maybe he has a solid outing.
On another note, I wonder if we’ll ever see Tavon Austin run a wheel route from the backfield. I keep thinking that one must be coming, but it never happens. I’m not criticizing Schottenheimer, just wondering.

Totally agree.
I was surprised Hill didn’t play after the 2nd pick last week vs SF.
I wonder if there is some type of rift between Hill and Fisher? The RAMS went out and signed Hill for this exact scenario. IMO Davis = Clemmens.
November 6, 2014 at 11:48 am #11327laramParticipantShotty is doing the game planning wv, Fisher has said himself that he will occasionally make in game suggestions, but its on the OC.
So the OC reigned Davis in.
Davis is making awful decisions, and even though he has played better defenses lately, there were many. many plays that he left on the field. The OC has down a tremendous job of drawing up plays and Davis is pissing them away. I’m talking routine plays he’s missing, not anything extraordinary that you would expect from an elite qb.
It makes me ill because I’m ready to win games, past ready.
IF Fisher was in “win now” mode he would go back to Hill.
Unfortunately he painted himself into a corner and probably won’t!

That will allow Hayes to be fresher and will increase his productivity as well.
The thing about Sunday is Williams calmed the heck down. He only blitzed 40% of the snaps vs the high numbers prior.
The Rams had 7 of their 8 sacks from the front four.
That’s encouraging.
Unfortunately they have to get more from the offense or they won’t repeat Sunday.

I don’t know. For an undrafted, 3rd string, rookie, he’s doing pretty well.
Heck, he’s helped the team win 3 games. I wonder how many games Seattle or SF would have won with their 3rd string QB playing every game this season?
Davis is doing most of the stupid stuff every rookie QB does. I think the question is the one several people have already commented on – can Davis improve, or is this his ceiling?
I think it’s way too soon to make any kind of final decision about Davis. He is so raw. I just have no idea what he’s going to be.
It’s interesting.
