Another day another dollar, another year of Rams training camp. By the time i get home and do my thing, i’m sure everyone already knows plenty about how the day went.

Traffic was light, weather was nice, cold even at the top of the bleachers with the breeze, good crowd but not crazy packed. I hung with phoenixsrising and the professor. They may or may not have reports of their own.

I got a chance to chat with Jourdan for a minute before practice and that was cool. She’s great. Later i saw her talking with Kevin Demoff and though i’m no lip reader i believe he was asking if she’d be interested in restructuring her contract with The Athletic.

As you already know, no Stafford and a lot of running. Also no VJ, hope he’s not on some kind of load management but it’s starting to seem that way. Then again he was apparently lights out on Saturday.

The Oline on the first play was Noteboom, Avila, Allen, Anchrum, Havs. But of course they swapped out a lot. Bennett got the first reps, don’t think i saw Winn take any snaps.

Akers looked good, Zach Evans had some good runs, even Williams but as always it’s hard to tell with no tackling, not to mention i’m just some dude sitting in the bleachers.

AD absolutely blew up a couple plays. I’d say, more often than not, it seemed like the defense was winning, especially when the #1 defense was out there.

Demarcus Robinson is doing stuff. Brycen Hopkins was making plays. Is this gonna be his year? Byron Young is impressive, Ochuan Mathis flashed on a couple plays but he was carted off at the end of practice. Hope it’s not serious.

Just returned home from seeing Camp today.

This will not be a long report …… too many disctractions and blocked views from the stands that kept me from getting a good view of certain drills and scrimmaging.

    – Punt return drill: Austin trammel, Xavier Smith, Puca Nacua, and Kyren WIlliams taking Reps today. I think Tutu did take some Reps later in practice. WIlliams and Smith seem to be the 2 that lloked the most smooth, although Smith did muff 1.

-ILB drills: THey run this drill in ppairs, just like how they would play on the fiels. Rozebook was with Ernest Jones, and then you either Anyalebechi or Wooden running with Jake Hummel in the second group. The group in general looked pedestriam ; nothing stood out.

11 on 11: In general it was a good day for TE’s 1&2 ; Higbee & Hopkins. ON running plays, they would sometimes go in motion, and on the snap, dive into the “B” gap to block down on the DE/OLB or straight up on an ILB. The RB’s had a few 10-15 yard gains getting through this gap. In the passing game, both had a number of catches. HIgbee had a nice TD grab form 15 yards out, and Hopkins duplicated it with a leaping grab over the middle for a score. Hopkins then caught a couple short yardage TD’s to give him 3 on the day. There was a big drop off from these 2 to SIms & Kalinic, and with Allen out with a Hamstring and did not see Hunter Long on the field.

D-line groupings: 1st unit, including OLB’s was Hoecht, Copeland, Turner, Donald, B. Young ; noteworthy that Kobie Turner was playing NT. 2nd unit: Mathis, E Brown, B Brown, D JOhnson, Hampton

There were many plays were they dropped 1 of the LIneman and lined up with 4, including the 2 OLB’s… for example: Hoecht, E Brown, D Johnson, D Hardy …. and few plays later, B young, K Turner, D Murchison, O Mathis

O-line groupings: 1st unit: LT A Jackson, LG Avila, C Shelton. RG Anchrum, RT Havenstein
2nd unit: LT Noteboom, Z Thomas, Allen, G MIller, RT Acuri

Run blocking was consistently good. However, pass blocking had some breakdowns. If it was live play, Aleric Jackson would have given up 3 sacks today. Going to need to see some improvement there.

Stafford did not participate on the field today. Bennet and Rypien took most of the Reps in 11-on-11. There were a couple of design Runs for Bennet. There was a play that fakes a Jet sweep to the WR and then Bennet reverese pivots and goes the other way. This play will catch some defense napping one day……

Of the WR’s,Puca is getting a lot of reps along with Demarcus Robinson. It was only 1 day so far for me, but is he continues to play like this, Robinson may be WR3.

Last note… it is good to see some added size with the CB group. Having Witherspoon and Gray , both at 6’2″ , balances out that group.

… After practive, some of the DB’s stayed behind to work… Witherspoon and Rochelle were working on technique together. I was happy to see to the veteran working with Rochelle.

I liked the Turner pick, but he’s an undersized NT.

QB take- I didn’t look at who was who.Matthew Stafford did not suit up.
I knew Bennett was 13. I know Rypien is like ??? Don’t know much about The Rams other QB.
    Don’t know why I didn’t bother,but it is a new QB group.

—Stenson Bennett was outstanding. He took ownership of The Rams offense.
    1. Seriously comfortable in the pocket. He keeps his eyes downfield, goes through his progression,& lives for another down, but keep’s pressure on the defense.
2.He brought back what a WINNER he is.That game against Ohio State was one of the most amazing games from a QB ever.He Carried Georgia on his back.
3.Don’t think there is much more, but he has a little Baker Mayfield in him.Meaning he can make all the throws.Wolford & Perkins couldn’t.
The other QB’s were ok ??(Run game).
—Matthew Stafford showed up basically after practice? Fans were going CRAZY!! The kids were going CRAZY.I don’t know if he was signing autographs?? There is a line & each day different groups come out to sign.

TE – have to bring up Tyler Higbee. Then his twin brother Brycen Hopkins. These guys are WEAPONS & nightmare matchups in The Red Zone.

The Rams finished off practice just dominating on OFFENSE!!
Hopkins & Higbee couldn’t be stopped & he’s Cooper Kupp always has to be brought up when talking unstoppable.

The first TD HOPKINS had Tomlinson was guarding him. I think he even hit him before the ball got there.NO ONE WAS going to STOP Hopkins. DUDE is DIALED IN IMPRESSIVE.I’m like JACKED UP!! Mcvay was as well.He came up to Hopkins & then Threw it right back to him for another TD!! PRACTICE ENDS!!

#83 is a big guy & looked good in warmup’s.He did a drill though with a Dummy & just ate it.He ran it over, but actually he probably went about it right & would have maybe drew a PI?
Niko K was interesting to watch.

The drills WR/TE Ben Sko on one side & then Kupp on the other side. Then Hopkins & Higbee.
I swear it was cool to see the similarities. PERFECT MENTORSHIP!!! Sko & Hopkins have really improved their game. It shows year (Sko )& 4 (Hopkins)

. BEN SKO- what a STUD!! I could have gotten band from here because I was so down on him.
I WAS WRONG!!! From first training camp to NOW Ben Sko just continues to WaoRak HARD & IMPROVE his GAME!! You can see that.

RB’s Cam Akers is finding holes inside. His hood vision & stays low.At the end of practice he ran for a 3 yard TD. His running ias consistent. He doesn’t do that run after the whistle thing.Didn’t see any really if those long plays from him either.
—I don’t know how else I can say it but POWER.The Rams whole concept is POWER & Protect. This Mike Lefluer has what he wants to do laid out. This OFFENSE is DESIGNED To RUN.
    — Rivers is a nice young RB.There was a play he got to the 5 yards line. I’m Saying POWER &!that’s what he was.He had at least a CB & LB trying to STOP him & his feet didn’t STOP & carried them in the Endzone. This kid 30 is going to make the team.I LIKE ME SOME RONNIE RIVERS.In blocking drills he is SOLID!!
    Tiyon Evans???? #27 ???
Zach Evans #21 is still raw,but the effort is there. He is such a straight up RB.I have to question if he makes the squad.Looks like a preseason RB,gets cut & on the practice squad.Wasn’t impressed.

—Kyren Williams is the real deal.He gets to the edge nice & hard to tackle.Never squares up.Runs at angles & has good vision. (Really like him as a PT guy as well ???)

Noteboom was The Rams starting LT for the most part.
He was in & I told this guy they were in motion & watch Noteboom. He pulled from let to right & turned once he got to the edge & turned back to block & seal. BEAUTIFUL Play Call & Design.
Noteboom just DOMINATED Byron Young all day from what I saw.
Alaric Jackson would alternate with him & late in the practice screamed to put Noteboom in.First day in Pads, but he looks BETTER than ever !!!!
Anchrum was play RG & he fits as a guard. As much as I haven’t liked him he looks strong. It takes players from College to The NFL to get that body frame.
He is an example.Everyone on here last year liked him in the preseason. His injury sucked & A.Jackson played that RG position well in his absence.
    — Shelton might have been with the first team ?
—Brian Allen looked sore afte the first drill snapping to the QB’s.
    A. Jackson is BIG,he does well.LT is going to not be a concern IMO.
Steve Avila is just a pure Guard. He locks up well & holds that LG spot down well.He really helps The LT to relax. He can be trusted on stunts & supporting the inside pass rush

The Defense- I LOVED BOBBY BROWN.He made a Big Play & started pounding his chest. That got me Fired Up.Let him know my appreciation.

There is #50? Don’t know why he keeps standing out? Learning numbers isn’t easy. Ernest Jones didn’t standout to me,but wasn’t watching him much.
—Rozeboom looks like a core special teams player. That’s a way to make the roster.
-Hummel was alright. There are some big boys out there though.

Was on the sidelines & not watching ,but the Defense stop the offense a few times early in practice.I think the group in whole is solid.

Hoecht is basically taking over for Floyd at OLB LDE. Copland is on the inside as DE.

A few quick observations…I seemed to spend most my time looking up names/numbers on the roster! It’s always tough the first day out, but so many new players!

Kupp and Donald look awesome, shocker. Kupp in particular impresses me that he just seems to get better every year, even at this stage of his career.

Akers looks ready to rock. Added weight and his cuts look just as quick and he’s playing with aggression. Zach Evans impressed me, more than the film I saw. He’s a powerful back and also runs with agression. Looked like the second best RB to me.

OG Avila dominated Marquis Copeland the couple plays I focused on him.

Kupp, Higbie, and Bryce Hopkins stood out as receivers.

Stetson Bennett looks very fast, he easily beat Byron Young to the sideline. Maybe not Lamar fast, but faster than Mahomes or Russell in his prime. I’d compare him to Steve Young, showing my age. As it has been pointed out, he looks confused in the pocket but really excels throwing on the run.

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen (you too Merlin),

It was a good day of practice for the Rams yesterday, very heated at times. they were really getting after it in 11 on 11. My observations are gonna be vague, I didn’t have my voice recorder or a roster with player #’s.
Day started with warmups, Xavier Smith, Nacua, Kyren Williams, one of these will be K and P returner. A Jackson was first player out on the field, Mike McCallister in shells pulling a wieght around behind him, did not practice.

Watched QB’s take snaps and make short passed to WR’s covered by one DB, wow, these WR’s are making some hard sharp cuts, DB’s doing well to cover, some of these youngster DB’s look very good. (sorry, they have their shirts rolled up, can’t see #’s)

11 on 11. O looked pretty good. The defense, especially the DL and pass rush not so good. Bobby Brown was 2nd string and a big disappointment to me. Slow and gets gassed after a few plays. They just aren’;t very big up the middle. AD getting tripple teamed and the rest of DL can’t get push. No pressure from the edge. I know its just one day’s observation, but man, that’s got to improve.

The OL looked OK, they need time to gell though, Shakey at times. Avila will be fine with work, Noteboom and Jackson took turns at LT with the ones, Allen played exclusively with the ones and Shelton the twos. Anchrum and Havenstien are locked in with the ones. Brusst played with the second team at RT and got his ass handed to him on more than one occasion. He needs work, although he does look better to me than he did last TC. Maybe T is a better option for him than G.

Middle LB is another huge concern, Jones is on his own, the rest are bench warmers at best.

Team practiced hard today. WR group stood out as did some DB’s (wished I could give some names). DL and edge are a concern. Lets see how they scrimage vs Chargers and perform in pre-season games. Still remains to be seen if McVay will sit all his starters. some of these guys need all the practice they can get. Avila and most of edge and DB’s for sure.

Have to give Brycen Hopkins total Props!! He has been so GOOD!! In training camp over his 4 years he has improved so much. He looks just as good as Tyler Higbee. They line them up wide(both) & they will both be NIGHTMARES for DB’s.
He scores at will. I have watched him as a RAM & he in NFL games is NASTY.He makes a play & comes up with power & wants to beat the DB up.I mean I’ve said last season a couple times like settle down wtf? I like his fire but never understood him.He has seemed like a trouble child. He has grown & matured.
-NOW he gets it. He is STRONG. RUNS solid Routes. He stays under control & goes over the middle with a purpose. EVERY BALL is his.
I look back at the Superbowl year & Hoplins was lost & Blanton really stood out. NOW HOPKINS looks as good as Higbee. They run the same routes & look the same. IN FACT imo Brycen actually looks stronger attacking the ball in the air.He will be TOUGH IN THE REDZONE.

—IMO that was one of the things The Rams were going to concentrate on is 12 personnel. There is going to be a lot of power plays The Rams will have.

Hoecht has probably lost 10 Lbs & playing at 275?? Hoecht is lining up as OLB Left side (Floyd) & Copeland is inside of him on the Leftside as DT/DE. Bobby Brown looked alright, but Jonha Williams is really GRINDING!! He has a nice motor. Going to find his way onto the Grass.

Alaric is probably close to 320? He is tall & thick. For some reason I might go out on a LIMB & say Jackson starts at Guard(LG ?).

it was a beautiful day with temps very mild low humidity and a nice breeze, unlike other years where it was hot and muggy….
The Rams have two fields and mix it up on which one they will have the live scrimmage, so you have to guess correctly to get a good spot….but knowing this, I did some recon and good some good info from a nice young lady who was setting up the video opps. She told me what field it would be on and I was on my way to snag a good spot.

Had a great upclose view in the corner of the endzone that they usually use and had some great looks at the action…

All in all, it was a pretty good energized practice, sometimes a little bit too much, as McVay stopped it 3/4 into the live scrimmage and pulled whole team to middle of the field and I’m guessing it was a “calm the eff down!” speech before they continued with the scrimmage.

    OL was
    Noteboom LT
    Avila LG
    1 Allen 2 Shelton at C
    Anchrum RG
    Havs RT

Allen and Shelton were rotation but the others were set as the 1’s

DB’s look very good, tons of energy and some very sticky coverage

Stafford looks very healthy and just whipping that ball

Kupp was out there coaching up

Akers looks like a new man, he was ripped and just much bigger looking

Evans looks like a carbon copy of Akers

Puka was getting a ton of targets

Atwell looked like a new man also, put on some muscle and was catching everything thrown to him….could be breakout year for him

Donald still just a game wrecker…the rookie is getting some good reps going against that monster

    Young looks the part

Hopkins looks like he wants some playing time this year

Bennett is small, but has a gun.

Cobie is a flat out playmaker

Tre is bigger that his stats and looked good

Sko had a great catch for a first down

VJ is going to be pushed by some really good looking prospects in DeMarcus, Puka, Johnson etc…

Lake looks like our starting S along with Fuller

Not a whole lot as there is too much to take in in such a short period of time, but it was a great time!!!

Love the energy this young team has this year

First, I was at camp today to introduce my soon-to-be 4yr old daughter to the Rams up close and in person. Got her a Kupp Jersey, hat, foam finger, football , etc. the Wife even got a Kupp Jersey and I went with AD – ya, dropped some cash on our beloved Rams. Lol. My daughter was born in SF so I need to make certain she’s a Rams fan and not a whiner fan.

Due to my focus being more on my family enjoying themselves, my normal detailed report from hand written and voice notes from the stands will not be what this is.

However, I got a good feel for some things.

First, Puka and Tutu will be the 3 and 4 WR (in no particular pecking order), maybe even #2 – more on VJ later. They are basically interchangeable. They lined up all over the formation. Tutu is what we know – quick, very fast, really good hands. He is a sharp route runner and despite his size, fights for the contested catch. Staff hit him on a 9-route for a TD and the coverage was pretty good, until it wasn’t – as Tutu accelerated the last few steps, separated and whammy – TD! Can he do that against elite coverage?? Not saying the Rams’ DBs aren’t elite. But, they too have to prove it.

Puka also caught a 9-ball from Stafford for a TD. The coverage was also good and the catch was contested (Tre Tomlinson was soooo close to breaking it up.) Puka is “pads fast”, much like Kupp. He also has a lot of Kupp-like traits. But not quite as athletic or deceptive. I think that will improve over time. The dude does not lose speed in/out of breaks and also seems to have a bit of a higher gear when he needs it. He has great hands. Great hands! He is going to be a factor.

Demarcus Robinson (#15) makes this team, IMO, as he too can be at least a #3. Smooth, really good hands, a “vet” WR who is trustworthy and makes plays. It will be interesting to see A. How many WRs they keep and B. Who those last 1-2 guys will be. I know Van Jeff makes the team but the number of “rest” days he is getting is troubling to me. Worried if this is a Gurley-like situation. Skow is in trouble if they only keep 6. The rest are PS or gone, IMO. Sorry McClutch.

Even though it was thud tempo, it was pretty physical, especially in pass pro and in the run game. I didn’t see Akers at all might have just missed his plays. But K Will, Royce the new dude, and Rivers all had decent success. Nothing all that explosive. But positive yardage more often than not. I did not see Evans but simply might have missed him/his plays also.

The O was in a lot of 11-Personnel, did a good deal of shifting, jet action, and empty/5-wide with a variety of “receivers”. Pretty typical. The run game looks to have some new wrinkles I can’t quite put my finger on as I didn’t have a high enough vantage point to see the blocking schemes. Also, Higs looks really good and Hopkins made at least one catch, I believe.

There was a lot of rotation on the DL but, to my dismay, I just didn’t have enough reps with unobstructed vision to key on them. I had to kind of take in the whole operation at field level and on one side. They were OK against the run (no explosives) and did get a couple “sacks” had the action been live. Not bad with no AD. I did not get to focus on the edge either – same reason, limited reps with clear vision- especially on the right side of the D as it was furthest from where I was.

Stetson seemed to make more plays from the pocket (damn that dude looks small – I am bigger than him, lol). His TD to McClutch was from the pocket I believe.

Stafford looks great, almost effortless in his operation of the O. He MUST stay healthy.

The OL – No Havs or Allen. I could only really see the right side. A Jax got a number of snaps there (RT) and looked good. I think Bruss was the other RT. Don’t think I saw Boom take snaps there but could have missed that. The right side held up pretty well. Pressure came from the offensive left and up the middle on the occasions it did get there/affect the QB – from what I saw.

After watching practice today I am pretty confident the OL will be solid, if unspectacular. Scheme and play calling will help them as will the run game on which MCV seems very focused

On thing I saw that was awesome; I believe it was E Jones. He was deep, and I mean deep in the middle hole on what had to be Cover-2. He was right there with the DB when the ball arrived and that pass was broken up – a deep post route. Did I say deep? EJ was 25-30 yards down field easy. It was a nice play by the D. All in all, the O got the better of the D from what I saw. Not surprising with AD out. But, the D made some plays and didn’t totally shit the bed. They NEED the preseason to get better and locked in as a unit, IMO.

The secondary is going to get beat sometimes, all of them do. But they weren’t lost or out of position at all today, they just made fewer plays than the O. AD on the field helps them a ton.

Not concerned at ILB, if Jones stays healthy. He’s a baddass. We will be in nickel and big nickel often which will reduce the reps at the other ILB position – likely Roseboom, IMO.

Edge is a complete crapshoot. I think they will try to add a vet if the preseason shows that they don’t have enough there.

In conclusion, this team is going to be good, perhaps very good. How long that takes remains to be seen of course. They are fast and physical and smart. They were getting coached a lot and seemed to take to it very well. This preseason will tell us the next chapter of development and the honing of the 53. Pay attention to how many guys the Rams cut who catch on with another team. If that number is fairly high, it should mean that the Rams’ scouts picked quality players and the best of them made our team. I might take a stab at predicting the 53 and PS after the Raiders game, which I am hoping to attend, again with my daughter and wife. …..Gotta keep indoctrinating my daughter into the Rams Way and make sure I keep those whiner ghosts at, ehem, Bay
