* Gil Brandt said positive things about GRob yesterday when he was at Rams camp. He thinks he is looking better and will take the step up this year.
* I’ve been at camp the last few days and the fact is, Robinson has gotten beat a few times (GRob) and it hasn’t all been roses. Quinn just flew right by him two times in a row and I know someone has pictures of it on a website somewhere. I also have pictures of GRob stone walling lots of our defenders. Overall I think he has been very good but he still has shown lapses. In the past it’s the lapses that cost him. GRob is a beast when he is on. We’re looking for more consistency at this point.
* Robinson LT. Now here I paid some closer attention. Good use of hands, arms and feet. Kept Quinn in front of him or pushed him out wide away from the pocket. Quinn looked fine too. I really think GR is going to be who we want him to be this season, an All Pro.
* LT Greg Robinson (#73) stonewalls DE Eugene Sims (#97) during 11 on 11’s. He did a great job mirroring him and riding him out of the pocket during this particular drill.
* Greg Robinson continues to have a very good camp. He is moving well and setting up against Quinn with good balance. I am not sure how much Quinn is really giving it, but I like what I’ve seen from Robinson so far.

* GRob looks good. Still has some inconsistency issues. GRob still has his ups and downs. Makes great plays, then a sloppy one. Where one play he’s opening up a 50 yard hole for Gurley to run through and the next play he’s letting his guy blow up Gurley in the back field. Par for course so far. Let’s how he does in the preseason games. More good than bad though for sure. GRob can be as dominant as he wants to be.
* There were quite a few passes that would not have gotten out of the pocket without that red jersey on the QB. I watched GRob struggle a couple times on edge rush (still his greatest weakness) and also do well, and across the OL it was much the same and I thought very good back and forth competition between the units.
* [The OL] played pretty well today. They opened up some early holes. One especially on the Left side. I have seen that hole a few times on the Left side. I hope we get to see a lot of that during the season. My concern for Robinson is on speed rushes. Bull rush he controls pretty well. He struggles if he does not get both hands on his man. They are improving as a unit since day one.

August 4, 2016 at 5:05 pm #50155nittany ramModeratorWell, that’s mostly encouraging.
They should put him up against Quinn on every snap. When he can consistently win that battle then we’ll know we got ourselves a tackle.

I will keep adding to (and bumping) that post as things come in.
Some people say, a camp report can’t tell you anything.
Maybe. But my experience is, if you follow the RANGE of different comments from different people, it gives you a pretty good idea about many different things. So of course the trick is to put them all in a bucket and then see how much it weighs.

Yes, the range is helpful, but in regards to camp reports I find the standard deviation and coefficient of variation to be the most useful.

Yeah. Of course. Uh…me too. Obviously.
August 4, 2016 at 7:11 pm #50166Isiah58ParticipantRobinson will get beat by speedy edge rushers, all tackles get beat from time to time. But many of his gaffs last year came when he simply blocked the wrong person while a defender ran by him to the QB, or he was late picking up the rusher. Those are the things that have to stop if he is going to be a good to very good left tackle.
I’m not sure how much they will go against each other, but I am going to the scrimmage on Saturday and I will try to get a little video of Robinson v. Quinn if I can and post it here.

To be fair and scrupulous, right now, out there in the wide ocean of the net, there’s some controversy among camp reporters about whether GR is looking good. Some emphasize him being beat by Quinn. Some say in general he is looking fine.
I personally wonder if GR is more of a “Jake Long at his best” with the Rams kind of LOT. In 2013, before his first knee, JL did not handle speed rushers with the kind of finesse we associate with top LOTs. BUT he was splendid in a play-action attack. That means you’re trading his ability to smash linemen on running plays for his ability to just form an anti-speed rush island.
Your point about GR working on all the mental errors is well taken.
August 5, 2016 at 1:52 pm #50243snowmanParticipantRobinson is still just 23 years old, he needs time to mature and improve his skills like most young players, so I’m not too concerned.

Here’s some stuff from a post about GR’s play last year,

I do not have a real positive opinion on GRob as a future star @ OLT by himself. But I do think that if GRob is teamed with a good solid heady veteran LG who is willing to assist him early this season with understanding the proper OL calls & many quick reads before the play begins …..it will greatly help him as he learns to be a solid OLT in the NFL. GRob might then have a very good successful season.
Last season in Wk 13 Rob Havenstein returned to start @ ORT thus giving Boudreau the opportunity to insert Garrett Reynolds back over to the left side with GRob. The Right side of Wichmann & Havenstein began working well. This is about the time we began to see GRob becoming more consistent with his blocks with many fewer whiffs occurring from the left side. Tim Barnes seemed to be less worried & stressed which helped greatly on his making good line calls & the 5 player OL working together for the most part for the first time in the 2015 season.
