ASIDE from the fighting, here’s a thread of other takeaways from a shortened Rams/Bengals practice…1. Akers, Jefferson, Lewis, Henderson among those who didn’t practice. Williams/Funk, Atwell/Skow, Garrett/Whitley among those who repped in snap share in absence (1s & 2s).
2. Perkins ran the 2s with Wolford (DEPARTED THUMBNAIL) out today. Lots of work with Harris, McCutcheon, Powell, Funk. Williams again lots of work with Stafford. Looks confident and smooth.
3. Powell also still repped 1 on kickoff/punt return, as expected.
4. Post-fight (one of them, anyway), Ramsey had an INT first play back.
5. Hoecht running special teams is amusing, meaning as a compliment. He’s about a head and shoulders taller/broader than everyone else out there and getting downfield to enforce. DL raving about he and Williams’ camps.
6. Durant is really getting thrown into it, no pun intended. Had been noted by Snead/McVay at draft but really impressed with what he does on outside, where some projected him pre-draft into slot alone.
7. Less tempo to open (pre-planned). More full field.
8. I’ve been wrong before (a lot!) but I think Yeast makes this team.
9. Atwell had a clear drop on a deep ball (otherwise TD). Immediately McVay goes directly to encourage him on sideline after failed play.
10. Something I almost never see: Kupp drop on a beautiful deep ball.
10., cont. …he knew it, too. Interesting to see a perfectionist troubleshoot himself after something like that (last fully-open practice of the year). Learn so much in neat human moments.
11. Early in 11-on-11s, I’m standing next to Kevin Demoff behind the end zone. Stafford
unfurls a ball on a corner route to Tyler Higbee that legitimately made no sense, the way it dropped in for him. Demoff, in an awed tone: “Holy shit. Nothing about that looked right, until the end.”

August 26, 2022 at 5:01 am #140281znModeratorBengals-Rams joint practice: Super Bowl deja vu and other observations
When the Rams offense lined up against the Bengals defense for the start of joint practices next to Paycor Stadium on Wednesday, it looked like a continuation of the visitorsâ final possession in Super Bowl LVI, with Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp and company driving the ball at will.
Stafford and backups John Wolford and Bryce Perkins came out and ran tempo right away, completing their first 19 passes against the Bengals defense in seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 action.
The first incompletion came when Bengals cornerback Tre Flowers â who was getting increased reps because starter Eli Apple was out after having fluid drained from his quad â broke up a pass intended for Allen Robinson II in the end zone.
Stafford came back and hit his next four passes, the last two of which were touchdowns to Kupp, who beat Chidobe Awuzie on the first one and Mike Hilton on the second, again conjuring memories from February.
âWe started off very slow,â Awuzie said. âI think it was one of our slowest days to start a practice.â
It was the first real action the first team had seen in nearly a week. Friday was a walk-through, Saturday a travel day, Sunday a preseason game in which no starters dressed, and Monday and Tuesday were off days.
âThatâs very true,â Awuzie said. âBut thereâs no excuses in this league. If youâre out here, youâve got to put out your best stuff. And obviously we didnât in the first half of the practice.â
All told, in the first set of sevens and 11s, the Rams completed 27 of 29 passes, punctuated with a touchdown pass from Wolford to undrafted rookie wide receiver Lance McCutcheon, who had Bengals undrafted rookie corner Allan George draped on him in coverage.
After a couple of periods of special teams work, the teams went back to an 11-on-11 period of third downs. On the first play, Flowers broke up a pass intended for Kupp to set a tone of redemption for the defense.
Even on the passes Stafford and the backups completed, many were short of the first down.
And the young defensive linemen â Cam Sample, Jeff Gunter, Joseph Ossai and Zach Carter in particular â spent a lot of time in the backfield, and each of them recorded at least one âsack.â
On the downside, there were multiple offsides penalties. Three of them went against Trey Hendrickson, one went against Sample and on another, Sample and Gunter jumped.
While talking about the young linemen after practice, defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo noticed Sample picking up his equipment behind him and pivoted off topic while comically raising his volume to say: âAs long as we can stay onside on defense with our defensive line. Oh, is that Cam right there?â
The most impressive periods for the Bengals defense were at the end, in the two-minute drill, which again brought back Super Bowl memories.
The second team went first, and Gunter got a sack on second down while George appeared to intercept a pass on third down, only to have the officials rule it hit the ground. On fourth down, safety Trayvon Henderson, who had an interception go off his hands earlier in practice, tipped a pass that George intercepted.
Stafford and the first team got one first down, but on the ensuing third down, he tried to hit Kupp along the right sideline, only to have Awuzie break up the pass. âThat was sweet,â Kupp told Awuzie as they headed out of bounds, and the conversation continued as they headed back to their huddles.
âHe said he tried to go late hands, but he didnât get me,â Awuzie said. âJaâMarr (Chase) does a real good job of that, too, so I was kind of used to it.â
On fourth down, Stafford tried to force a ball into coverage over the middle, only to have either Flowers or Hilton deflect just before they collided. Vonn Bell snared the ball out of the air for a practice-ending interception.
Rams head coach Sean McVay was complimentary of Anarumo and the Bengals defense afterward.
âTheyâve got a Rolodex of coverages. They play it all really sound,â McVay said. âThereâs not a lot of air in the coverages, and they mix it up really well. ⊠In a lot of instances, whether itâs watching these guys or even just spending a little bit of time with Lou Anarumo, I have tremendous respect for him and what his group has done, especially just looking at their trajectory since Zac (Taylor) took over. Iâm just such a fan of the game, and Iâve got so much respect for the way that they operate.â
Hilton and Flowers stayed down for a bit after the play, but they eventually walked off under their own power, albeit with a slight limp for Hilton. But he said in a post-practice interview he was good.
âWe ended up finishing strong, made a lot of plays, doing what weâre used to,â Awuzie said. âThis is my first time doing a joint practice. It was kind of awkward and weird at first. Itâs not a game, but youâre going against another team. I still donât really know what to say about it.
âWe started with 15 minutes of (individual drills) and then (went) straight to competing. Now we know what to expect, so our minds have to be right as soon as we get out here tomorrow.â

Deserved after the spring and summer he had. They have a practice on Monday as far as I am aware, so doesnât make a lot of sense to wait even until Tues if they want to get to their ârealâ full install time ahead of Buffalo quick as they can. But they may have some other reason in mind if they do wait.

Rams have no offensive line depth, and the other thing is that we haven’t really seen their offensive line STARTERS yet with Noteboom, Shelton taking on starting roles for the first time.Lance McCutcheon should change Rams’ long-term plans at WR and maybe even any thought of signing OBJ.
Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
“It seems like Lance is doing his part to make it easy,” says GM Les Snead on the broadcast as McCutcheon snares a tough grab, then, “Sean likes receivers, so it’s OK to have as many as possible in that room.”Rams Brothers@RamsBrothers
Perkins is just great in space with his legs. If he ever has to take control of the offense, itâll hopefully be scaled back to better suit his skill set.In other words, he should probably never be in empty. Total opposite of what they do with Stafford.

of the 8 possible WRs to possibly make the 53 roster (according to Rodrigue), there are 6 of them I would not hesitate to cut to make a spot for OBJ.
August 28, 2022 at 3:38 pm #140325znModeratorStuds and duds from Rams’ preseason loss to Bengals
Cameron DaSilva
* https://theramswire.usatoday.com/lists/rams-bengals-best-worst-players-preseason/
Thatâs a wrap on the preseason. The Rams finished their exhibition slate on Saturday night with a 16-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, their second loss of the preseason.
As poorly as the offense played, putting together just one scoring drive, the defense had a few standout performers. It was the last chance for players to impress the coaching staff before final roster cuts, and four guys stood out for the right reasons Saturday.
There were also four players who didnât have their best against the Bengals. Here are our studs and duds from Saturdayâs loss.
Stud: OLB Keir Thomas
Thomas looked great against the Bengals, even despite only playing about half the game. He had three tackles for a loss, one sack and a QB hit in the first half alone, flashing as a pass rusher on the outside. Most impressively, he used his size and length to disrupt the Bengalsâ running game, slicing through for an impressive TFL in the second quarter.
Stud: WR Lance McCutcheon
McCutcheon put himself on the map in Week 1 of the preseason by scoring two touchdowns, and it clearly wasnât a fluke. He came back the next two weeks and played well, including a five-catch, 76-yard performance against the Bengals on Saturday. He made a great grab for 32 yards in the fourth quarter, helping set up Bryce Perkinsâ 3-yard touchdown run. All heâs done is make plays and it should earn him a spot on the 53-man roster.
Stud: DL Michael Hoecht
Hoecht should make the Ramsâ 53-man roster after doing so last year and looking good this preseason. Against the Bengals, he had two tackles, including one that went for a loss. His sack helped force a field goal attempt by Cincinnati, too.
When the Bengals were pinned deep, Hoecht laid a big hit on Brandon Allen, who still managed to complete it deep to his receiver. Hoecht was a split-second late, but it was a good rush rep.
Stud: LB Jake Hummel
McVay shared a neat bit of information after the game: Hummel broke the teamâs preseason tackles record. He finished the preseason with 22 tackles, topping the previous record of 21. On Saturday night, he finished with six tackles, including one tackle for a loss. Heâs been all around the ball throughout the preseason.
Dud: RB Jake Funk
Funk got 19 carries this preseason, including seven on Saturday night. His longest carry went for 6 yards. Yes, heâs playing behind a backup offensive line, but the Bengals have also been playing their backups. He finished the night with 32 yards on 12 carries, also fumbling it deep in the red zone after attempting to gain extra yards after contact.
Dud: RT Bobby Evans
Evans has struggled throughout the preseason and gave up another sack against the Bengals, getting beat by in the first half. Heâs going to be a player to watch when final cuts are made because by no means is he a lock to make the team, despite being a fourth-year veteran and former third-round pick.
Dud: CB Cobie Durant
Durant was a real bright spot in the first two preseason games, but he made some mistakes against the Bengals in coverage. He allowed two big plays to Bengals receivers, though the Rams seemed to be in zone coverage on the deep shot to Kendric Pryor in the first half. He also missed a tackle along the sideline before getting up and eventually making the stop on the receiver.
Dud: OL Chandler Brewer
Brewer didnât have the best night. He was beat quickly and badly by Zachary Carter for a sack, which resulted in a fumble by Bryce Perkins â thankfully, one the Rams recovered. Brewer isnât necessarily a long shot to make the team, but heâs also not among the favorites. This performance probably wonât help his chances.

What I need to note first is the difference in offensive depth and talent on a Zac Taylor team. I think their defense was above average but still had plenty of holes on 3rd string, where they should be.
I also think both squads were a little tired. I may be reading too much into that but most of the players Im used to seeing move faster had a little lead in their pants.
Guys who will not clear waivers (new section for this game only)
1) Bryce Perkins … He has shown touch, the ability to make quick decisions, and grit running the football.
2) McCutcheon … He’s a 1:1 beater. Just throw the ball up and he’s got the advantage. His tracking and balance cannot be taught.
3) AJ Arcuri … Honestly came along as fast or faster than AJ Jackson last year. The “Nah, we don’t have to draft an OLT” sentence is something I never thought was possible. I was wrong.
4) Jonah Williams … Someone will roster him if we don’t. Hoecht might slide through …
The Great
5) Having cut downs be as hard as they are.
6) Really just a show put on by McCutcheon … haven’t enjoyed a preseason as much as this in a while. (Though he had a couple marks against him this game, late to a block kinda stuff)
7) Keir Thomas. He might make it through waivers, I give it 50/50. He has certainly put together some highlights, but when he’s beat he seems to get fully swallowed.
The Good
8) Trammell, just put him on the bench, we know we want him on the PS as our backup PR.
9) Roger Carter looks smooth catching and running with the ball. He doesn’t have height but he’s still dangerous on bootlegs and check downs… Im sure he’ll be a PS guy.
10) Hummel I thought had a decent to plus preseason and was getting places faster in this game, though I still would take the chance on losing him to save a roster spot.
11) PS talent depth at DB. We won’t lose all of them. Likely 2-3.
12) I thought Ragas was good on short yardage.
13) Garrett Flashed a tiny bit, but should still clear waivers. I’d keep K Thomas over him.
The Bad
14) Jake, you CANNOT fumble. I’m letting him clear waivers.
15) I am NOT happy with our punting situation.
16) The completion percentage by Allen and Browning are a tad disconcerting. It could just be their talent, but I’m not used to seeing so many guys open against us.
17) Not happy with Yeast.
