WR Kenny Britt staying with Rams

Wide receiver Kenny Britt is sticking with St. Louis, having agreed with the team on a two-year deal, the Rams announced.

Britt signed a one-year deal with the Rams last year after spending his first five seasons with the Tennessee Titans.

In signing with St. Louis in 2014, Britt was reunited with coach Jeff Fisher, who spent a first-round pick on Britt in 2009.

Britt, 26, finished with 48 catches for 748 yards and three touchdowns in 2014. Those 748 yards were the second most in Britt’s career and the most by a Rams pass-catcher since Torry Holt in 2008.

For his career, Britt has 205 catches for 3,198 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Kenny Britt Re-Signs with Rams: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction

Kenny Britt Re-Signs with Rams: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction
    Thearon W. Henderson/

The St. Louis Rams have reportedly reached a two-year agreement worth almost $14 million, with $4.3 million guaranteed, with veteran wide receiver Kenny Britt, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Britt is not a high-end receiver. He never caught 50 passes in a season and has tallied a modest 22 touchdowns across six years in the NFL.

Instead, the Rutgers product has simply become a reliable target—somebody who can fill several different roles within a receiving corps. There’s certainly value that comes along with that.

The question coming into the offseason was if the Rams would bring him back. He signed a one-year deal with St. Louis last March and proceeded to lead the team in receiving yards. So the first was good, though the need for a true No. 1 wideout was still obvious.

After the season, Britt told Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he was hoping things would work out to keep him with the Rams:

I definitely want to come back here. This is a young team. It’s a great young team. They’ve just scratched the surface on what their abilities could be. They’re growing each day, and they’re growing each year.

I’ve only been here one year, so to see how they’ve grown from OTAs to now is just amazing. So I want to see ’em grow even more. I hope I can be a part of that.

Of course, there are few guarantees when it comes to free agency.

Luckily for Britt, things worked out. He gets to stay with the Rams under the guidance of head coach Jeff Fisher, whom he also worked with during his time with the Tennessee Titans.

Ultimately, his role within the offense won’t be known until the dust settles ahead of training camp. Even though he did step up when asked last season, it would be best for the Rams if he’s not expected to lead the team in receiving again.

The Rams’ passing game will at least look different this season with Nick Foles behind center after the quarterback was acquired in a trade that sent Sam Bradford to Philadelphia.

Britt, Stedman Bailey and Brian Quick could take a much-needed step forward in 2015 if Foles can add consistency under center.

Britt found a comfort zone with the Rams last season. Now, he’ll look to build off it.

I think the important part of the contract is the guaranteed money. Ayers got 3m. Kendricks got 10m. So, 4m for Britt isn’t huge. imo Until we see the contract or someone says something, it could be part incentives. The contract appears to be higher than expected, but I am sure the Rams have an easy out. Is is a hybrid contract. 😉 Half reward, Half prove it again.

I don’t think it alters their draft strategy. Snead drafts players not positions, Fisher drafts veterans. 😉 It might affect free agent signings, cause of the cap. imo

    Rams re-sign Kenny Britt
22 minutes ago • By Jim Thomas

Just hours after signing Detroit defensive tackle Nick Fairley, the Rams continued to make moves in free agency signing wide receiver Kenny Britt to a two-year deal according to the team.

Britt revived his career last season with the Rams, catching 48 passes for 748 yards and averaging 15.6 yards per catch. New quarterback Nick Foles has shown an ability in the past to throw the long ball, and Britt obviously provides a deep threat.

Britt’s return doesn’t eliminate but certainly lessens the need for the Rams to seek a wide receiver in the draft, assuming Brian Quick returns successfully from shoulder surgery which is expected to keep him out until training camp. Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey, and Chris Givens also are under contract from last season’s wide receiver corps.

During the early free agency period, things were quiet on Britt _ and it was not known if he took any other visits before deciding to return with the Rams.

Britt’s signing means that two of the team’s four free-agent priorities in terms of their own players will be back with the team in 2015. Tight end Lance Kendricks re-signed on the first day of free agency. Quarterback Shaun Hill signed with Minnesota. But offensive tackle Joe Barksdale, who has yet to take any visits, is still in play for the Rams.

I haven’t bothered to estimate the cap. The Rams have plenty, plus they can always get another ~10 million by redoing Quinns’ roster bonus, I think. We can say guess. 28 million after trade. minus Ayers 3+ Kendricks 5+ Fairley ~6 Britt
`6 = roughly 21 million. So, ? 7 million left? Then redo Quinn to get through 2015. There are still players we can cut, too, Pead, Givins, maybe more?

This year was never any problem. 2016 is the year things get tight and we might lose some players we want to keep. So far Demoff seems to be protecting 2016. imo

Your math has them not able to sign Wisniewski or even Barksdale.

No, they have 7 million left maybe more if some of Britt’s is incentive. The they can gain 10 million from Quinn. then they can cut Pead and Givins for 2 million more. That is at least 19 million available, if they really want to spend it. My short cuts confuse people sometimes.

Cool, I was a bit high on my estimates on purpose and that must also mean that part of Britt’s contract is incentives. But even that 13 million is fluid, cause of Quinn and other possible cuts.

The St. Louis Rams will hang on to free-agent receiver Kenny Britt.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday that the receiver is staying with the Rams on a two-year, $9.125 million deal worth up to $14 million, per a source informed of the situation. Britt receives $4.3 million guaranteed.

NFL Media columnist Michael Silver first reported Wednesday that the team was expected to re-sign the 26-year-old pass-catcher.

Keeping Britt adds some semblance of consistency after a bevy of offseason changes on the offensive side of the ball. The Rams added a new offensive coordinator in Frank Cignetti before the team swapped Sam Bradford for Nick Foles on Tuesday.

The enigmatic Britt set a career high with 48 catches to go along with 748 yards and three touchdown snags in 2014 — the second-best statistical year of his career. However, he topped 70 yards in just two contests.

The Rams will take another spin with the one-two combination of Tavon Austin and the 6-foot-3 Britt — No. 51 on Around The NFL’s top 101 free agents list — for at least another year. Jeff Fisher could be in the market to add another wideout in a deep draft.

The Rams also announced they re-signed free agent tight end Lance Kendricks.

If they resign Barksdale, and all indications are that they will. Our starting offensive line is just as good as last years offensive line. imo I am sure they will add a couple veterans. Even if they are too expensive. 😉 Then they draft some guys that they can develope. This is me trying to project what the Rams might do on draft day.
    ……….
    1. Ereck Flowers*, OT, Miami ———–possible trade down———- or any player from Auburn 😉 Just Snead, he takes a WR. 😉
    2. Eric Kendricks, ILB/OLB, UCLA
    3. Max Garcia, G/C, Florida
    4. Sean Mannion, QB, Oregon State

I see this as a realistic possibility. I personally like Cooper a lot at 10. But, pending any OL signees such as Barksdale or Blalock their muy grande need is the OL right now, still. I know – I’m not a rocket scientist. I can see the potential for a trade down scenario if they’re set on the OL in the first round. Who are the trade down partners to go from 10 to say 20 – not Philly again? As FA winds down, the next week or even couple of days should define this a bit better.

Will Mariotta slide to 10? I doubt it but stranger things have happened. Would snisher draft him if he did? I think without question he would.

Personally, I would draft Cooper, otherwise it is Offensive line. Mariota might be too good an option to pass on, but I like the QBs in 2016. I will take a chance on getting one then. And, who knows, maybe Foles works out? Mariota just has too far to go to develope. imo But that is just me. I wouldn’t find fault with anyone who wanted Mariota.

i think they need at least 3 offensive linemen. i’d prefer they at least re-sign joe barksdale and draft one. that leaves one more.

but i also think they got a real shot at one of amari cooper or kevin white. i’m not sure that’s an opportunity i’d want the rams to pass up. if i was snisher, i’d wait to see if i could get either of those two. if not, i’m trading back and picking the best olineman available.

i’d even consider defensive back if the right one was available.
