According to Pro Football Focus, Allen is the second-highest graded center in the NFL with an overall mark of 78.5 – lower than only Detroit’s Frank Ragnow. He has a run-blocking grade of 80.8 and has allowed just one pressure in two games.
What’s even more impressive is that he faced the likes of Akiem Hicks and DeForest Buckner in his first two games, more than holding his own as a blocker. It’s still early in the season, but Allen seems to be proving his doubters wrong in the first two weeks – myself included.
September 20, 2021 at 7:07 pm #132357InvaderRamModeratori was a doubter. i don’t know enough about line play to really say anything of substance. but. from what i’ve been reading and the fact that stafford has largely had tons of time to throw i am pleasantly surprised by the line play as a whole.
i think there was one play where protection just really broke down, but i think the announcers said that whit was at fault. i don’t expect that to happen often.
hopefully, it continues.

Allen had a solid game. It was even better than the opener vs the Bears in which he got beat twice. I did not see him beat once in this game. He tends to give up just a tad in pass pro getting pushed back a little, but his technique is really solid. He is also quickly locating and sliding to the pressure and allowing for a solid pocket. I am so happy with how he has improved from 2019 when it was quite the shitshow at times. I guess Mcvay and Carberry knew what they were talking about.

Easily the biggest surprise of this season for me so far. I am someone that had him dead and buried coming into camp. 3rd center, 20 percent odds that even make the roster. Pretty amazing development
September 27, 2021 at 2:50 am #132536znModeratorMuch of the talk leading into this game was about how good Vita Vea is (and he is!) Brian Allen was up to the task.
Look at the protection here. The guy laying on his face is Vea. Who put him there? 🤔

September 29, 2021 at 8:46 pm #132639InvaderRamModeratori love matt stafford and what he’s done so far. and he deserves all the accolades. but this oline has been awesome as well.
and not to take anything away from stafford, but it sure woulda been nice to see goff have that much protection the past couple years.
September 29, 2021 at 8:49 pm #132640InvaderRamModeratoralso not trying to say that goff would have been this good. he would not have. not as good as stafford has been. but he would have been better than he was.
September 30, 2021 at 1:12 am #132650znModeratorI’m so desperate to share this clip of Brian Allen pancaking Vita Vea in pass pro that I went full boomer and literally recorded it on my phone.
I’ve heard many OL gurus say: “pass pro doesn’t have to be passive”. I get it. pic.twitter.com/eRsGFNXQLM

“This game was arguably won in the trenches. Tampa Bay’s defensive line has been causing teams problems dating back to last season, but the Rams offensive line largely shut them down and kept Stafford clean in the pocket all day. Nobody on the Rams line surrendered more than two total pressures, and the sack late in the fourth quarter was the first and only time the line allowed him to even hit the ground.”

Havenstein is on a mission this year. Extremely impressed with him so far.
Overall I think our OL is well within that top ten. Because they’re also playing well as a unit too. We may have a top 5 unit if things go well on the health front.
Carberry is off to a fantastic start. Remember these guys don’t get a preseason with live snaps and it looks like they’re in midseason form. We have not seen that from our line in McVay’s tenure yet. This is a first IMO

If they keep up this level of performance, I don’t think the Rams can be beaten.
Matthew Stafford + All Day = TDs.

Well the stats are out now at PFR. How many times was MS pressured in the 1st 3 games? It’s 3, 4, and 6. So 13. Among qbs with at least 30 total attempts in the first 3 games, that ranks 3rd.
But then in terms of defensive pressures, here’s how the Rams first 3 opponents rank.
CHI…25th
IND…32nd
TB….23rdSo they have not really been tested yet.
ARZ btw ranks 16th.

The way everyone was talking about that D-Line, I assumed it was in the Top 10.

Tampa is actually 32nd in sacks. Interesting, no? Last year they were 5th. Obviously they have 13 more games to fix that but still.
October 12, 2021 at 10:08 am #133010znModeratorBrian Allen was on the 53-man roster all of last season, but he never took a snap. That’s because he was never really healthy. https://t.co/NixOc227gY

The OL
After five games, against good teams that have a pretty good front seven,
They have been playing outstanding football.
According to Football Outsiders, the OL is ranked 7th for both run and pass protection.
Ranked 19th on the run block, in which I think thats a little miscued because we’ve been passing the rock more than using the run.
But the pass protection is outstanding and we are number one.
We are the top OL with the least amount of pass pressure percentage and only giving up 3 sacks after five games against good front seven defensive teams.
Four of those five teams were playoff teams last season with AZ an up rising team for this season was our only lost, and during that game, our OL still played outstanding.
Continuity has a lot to do with how this unit is playing,
After being together and going into their third year as a unit,
Plus building up the physical strength in the middle
With two experience bookends,
Has a lot to do with how they are playing IMO.

https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-week-6-offensive-line-rankings-20214. LOS ANGELES RAMS (Up 2)
Best-graded: T Rob Havenstein | 75.9
Worst-graded: G Austin Corbett | 68.9The Los Angeles Rams announced themselves as real contenders this year when they beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the statement their offensive line made in that game may have been even bigger. They allowed just 11 total pressures as a unit against a formidable opponent. Andrew Whitworth has a top-five PFF pass-blocking grade, allowing just seven total pressures from almost 200 pass-blocking snaps despite closing in on his 40th birthday, which may be as impressive as the age-defying feats of Tom Brady at quarterback.
