Report: Sam Bradford likely to ask Eagles for trade out of Philadelphia

    John Breech | CBSSports.com

    http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/25563553/report-sam-bradford-likely-to-ask-eagles-for-trade-out-of-philadelphia

Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford doesn’t feel very wanted in Philadelphia and now, it seems that he wants out.

According to Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole, Bradford is likely to “ask for a trade” or “some way to get out of Philadelphia so that he can move on with his career somewhere else, with a team that is going to be invested in him long-term.”

If Bradford does want out of Philly, it wouldn’t be a complete surprise. The Eagles quarterback was reportedly upset on Wednesday after his team made a trade with the Browns that gave the Eagles the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

The reason Bradford’s upset with the trade is because Eagles executive vice president Howie Roseman made it clear that Philly’s going to take a quarterback with the second pick, which means more competition for Bradford.

If the Eagles do grab a quarterback with the second pick, that means they’d have three well-paid quarterbacks on the roster, which is one too many, according to Jon Gruden.

“The problem I see right now in Philadelphia is they have too many quarterbacks to be friendly with,” Gruden said on Thursday, via ESPN.com. “How are they going to distribute any reps and get anybody ready when you’ve got Sam Bradford making $18 million, you got Chase Daniel, who’s a backup, making $7 million?”

It’s actually worse than that: Daniel’s contract includes $12 million in guarantees, Bradford’s includes $22 million in guarantees, and whomever comes in with the No. 2 pick will get a contract that includes at least $24 million in guarantees.

That’s a lot of money for a position where only one guy can play at a time.

“I don’t know how you’re going to get these guys all reps and get them all ready, but Doug Pederson will have to answer that,” Gruden said. “That will be a challenge.”

Gruden, who now works for ESPN, hasn’t coached since 2008, but he has a theory on what might happen, and it meshes with what Cole reported.

“There could be a trade,” Gruden said. “I don’t want to start any rumors in Philadelphia, but if they do draft a quarterback, with all they have invested in him, I’m sure they want to get him as many reps as possible. That’s going to make somebody unhappy and perhaps expendable.”

The biggest thing holding the Eagles back from a Bradford trade is probably his contract.

The quarterback has already collected an $11 million signing bonus from the team, which means if the Eagles were to trade him, they’d have paid him $11 million on his new contract to play zero snaps. That kind of deal isn’t great for business if you’re the Eagles.

On the other hand, Bradford is set to count $12.5 million against the salary cap in 2016, so the Eagles would save $1.5 million in cap space. Also, if the trade went down after June 1, the Eagles could spread the $11 million cap hit over two seasons ($5.5 million a year).

Plus, any new team would pick up the rest of Bradford’s $11 million in guaranteed money ($7 million in 2016 base salary plus $4 million roster bonus in March 2017).

Basically, a new team would pay Bradford $7 million for 2016, which is interesting because that’s the exact number Broncos general manager John Elway wanted to pay Colin Kaepernick. If Bradford wants out and a team is willing to pay a price the Eagles can’t refuse (second- or third-round pick), it wouldn’t be a shocker to see Bradford get traded.

Sammy should have worked with the Rams on his contract and he would still be the Rams starting QB. Now it is the Traveling Sammy Show!

Eagles have been informed Sam Bradford wants to be traded and he will not be showing up for their off-season program any longer, per source.

Ag and I both posted this, then each saw the other did so each deleted our own, then I saw that it wasn’t here at all…so here it is again.

That’s how we do things here. Sheer improvisation and adapting.

It’s an anarchist utopia. In the best sense of that.

Sam has to the see the writing on the wall. If he starts the year as number one, he’s not likely to finish the year that way. The Eagles didn’t give up that many picks so Sam could start all year. The best case scenario for Sam is that he is Jon Kitna and Wentz is Carson Palmer. That said, the 2003 Bengals did not give up a boatload of picks to get Palmer.

I wonder if Andy Reid would be interested in having Foles as a back up? Similarly, I wonder if Chip Kelly would want Bradford back?

    14 Million per season can’t buy Sam’s happiness… apparently.

Never did a QB earn so much for producing so little.

I heard speculation that Bradford wouldn’t do this if there wasn’t some other team interested. Denver? 😉

My take on this—bringing in a rookie behind him is one thing, and trading 3 1st rounders for the 2nd pick in the draft is another.

Any qb in his right mind knows that a team trading away 3 first rounders is going to go with their investment. We know that, the teams know that, he knows that. He’s now placeholding, like Warner was with the Giants in 04.

So Bradford knows full well that under those conditions, the team would actually have to be insane to treat that situation like actual competition. So his contract is no longer a 1-year “prove it” deal, it’s a “placehold till we promote our expensive 1st rounder” deal. There’s no honest genuine real “prove it” to that deal any more.

I think Warner went into a bad situation in NY in 04, too.

Bradford has only so many years left and he wants to be in a situation where he can at least compete to start. That is never going to happen with the Eagles. Not really. In fact the Eagles would look like idiots if they treated it like a real competition.

Bradford signed a two year deal. Bradford had to know, or should of known the Eagles were not looking at him as the future.

Plus, I feel Foles is worth a little more on the open market than Bradford. Foles is like a year and a half younger. Foles earns less money.

I dont care about Bradford’s motivations or internal algebra
on this, but I will be curious as to what Philly gets for him,
and what team trades for him.

Obviously, Denver would give him the best shot at a Ring
I would think. I’d like to see him on that Denver team.
Just to see how he’d do with that kind of team around him.

    Broncos inquired about Sam Bradford

    http://www.theredzone.org/BlogDescription/tabid/61/EntryId/56116/Report–Broncos-inquired-about-Sam-Bradford/Default.aspx

The Denver Broncos have reached out to the Philadelphia Eagles to inquire about a trade for disgruntled quarterback Sam Bradford, Mike Klis of 9News in Denver reports. This per an NFL source.

According to Klis the Eagles price was too high. Bradford’s agent Tom Condon said his client has not been granted permission to seek a trade.

Bradford has missed two seasons with a torn ACL and six games of another with an ankle injury.

His salary could be an issue for the Broncos as he is fully guaranteed to make $18 million this year.

Broncos inquired on Bradford; Eagles not inclined to trade

    http://www.theredzone.org/BlogDescription/tabid/61/EntryId/56149/Broncos-inquired-on-Bradford–Eagles-not-inclined-to-trade/Default.aspx

The Eagles are not inclined to trade their presumptive starting quarterback Sam Bradford despite receiving a preliminary call from the Denver Broncos this week, Conor Orr of NFL.com reports.

Per NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the Broncos called the Eagles for a very basic discussion about Bradford. No compensation was discussed, and the main takeaway was that Philadelphia wants to hold on to the former No. 1 overall pick. This, coming hours after an ESPN report that said the 49ers have not had any internal discussions about acquiring Bradford.

Bradford has said he doesn’t want to go to SF because of Chip Kelley.

I am going to guess the feeling is mutual.

Jordan Matthews, Eagles WRs stick up for Sam Bradford

    http://www.theredzone.org/BlogDescription/tabid/61/EntryId/56554/Jordan-Matthews–Eagles-WRs-stick-up-for-Sam-Bradford/Default.aspx

Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford has taken criticism from all angles after requesting a trade when the team moved up to draft Carson Wentz.

When no deal was made Bradford returned to the NovaCare Complex where he was welcomed back by a group of teammates that not only understood his predicament but also defended his actions, Matt Lombardo of NJ Advance Media reports.

“My thing is,” Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews said following Tuesday’s practice at the NovaCare Complex. “Yeah, all that stuff was happening, but when he came back he got right back into it and got right back to work. That’s what we need to do and that’s what he has to focus on.

“All the other stuff gets nullified if we go out there and win. Once the pads go on, Sam’s not going to be sitting back thinking ‘what if.’ No, he’s going to be out there ready to go win a freakin’ football game. Let’s be completely honest. He’s not the first or only player in the NFL looking for a situation where he can make more money or better their situation. He’s just a quarterback, so I know it’s looked at a little differently.

“But, if he’s in here … I know Sam. Sam’s going to want to go out there and win. He doesn’t have social media, but he knows what people say. He wants to prove them wrong. We want him out there.”

Matthews along with teammate Zach Ertz flew to Bradford’s home in Oklahoma to work out with the quarterback earlier this offseason. Even with Wentz now in the fold, the wide receiver says that what happens from here forward is all that matters for Bradford, not the business drama over the past several weeks.

“We can’t worry about next season,” Matthews said. “I don’t even want to talk about that. We have to worry about right now … It’s all that matters. It’s all we’re focused on. Whatever happens in the future, we’ll roll with it. But right now, Sam’s here. He’s the starting quarterback. We have to be ready to compete for him and we want him out there.”

“I think people saying Sam doesn’t want to compete are the farthest thing from the truth,” Chris Givens said. “He’s a competitor. He’s a guy that wants to win. He’s a guy that comes to work every day looking for ways to get better. He’s a guy that people look to to lead.”
