Man, McV has such a big job ahead of him. Think of all the stuff he has to watch on film so he can make decisions about:

    1 GRob
2 Ogletree (how to play him)
3 Tru Johnson (keep him or not)
4 Britt and every other WR.
    5 Tight Ends
    6 Guards, Centers, LT ?
    7 Gurley

Free agents, draft choices, installing a new Offense, Goff…

What the heck will this team look like next year? Who will they be?

Is it gonna be ANOTHER year below .500 ?

I got LOW expectations, myself. At this point, anyway.

I expect another down year. Try and Britt probably will be gone, due to we can’t afford them. I can’t see us getting DeSean Jackson either. He’ll be too expensive as well. I can see Tavon and Brockers to take a mini cut to help the team out financially.

Can they reach they 7-9-bullshit level next year Jack?

…oh…and if they DO have a winning team next year
does that mean Fisher Sucked for sure ?

well. i can’t say until i see who they re-sign and which free agents they do sign. and how the draft turns out.

it’s conceivable that they have a winning season.

No. Too much newness. Plus we have salary cap issues. That is because of Fisher. Giving Austin, Barron, and Brockers huge contracts. Now we have to be wise on how we have to deal with the cap. That hurts us. Even though I’m not a fan of McVay. But he will struggle this year due to the talent we can put on the field.

Rams don’t have cap issues. Far from it.

If Jared Goff takes a big step forward and Gurley returns to form, that alone could get them to .500, (assuming the defense remains tough).

I want to add a CB and get the offense going. Along the way, anything that helps is good.
    .
The Salary Cap is fine. We have no millstone contracts. That doesn’t mean we can do everything we might want to do, but we can do any important things that we want. imo

I expect a dramatic improvement from the offense, just having competent coaching on that side of the ball will have a huge impact through game planing and the ability to adjust to defenses
and opponents not knowing our own playbook better than GRob. The defense will depend on if Quinn can rebound to a higher level or if the decline continues. I’m thinking 8-8 but I do believe there is a losing culture that must be cut out which can always bring complications.

the past few years, the Rams lost games that were winnable with better game day management, discipline and execution.

In 2016, Bills, Detroit, Panthers, Dolphins… all games that should’ve been in the win column….

It happened in 2015 vs Vikes, GB, Pitt, and SF

The Rams need to learn how to win those close games…

    10-6 is attainable in 2017

I’m hoping GRob will be moved to LG.

We gonna suck. B/c EVERYONE has to learn a new system. Offense and Defense.

Just don’t understand why Fisher abandoned the zone blocking scheme when it was so successful the year before.

    ==================

Well I think they are gonna suck too, but what hope there is,
is in the examples of teams that turned their OLines around in one year.
I suppose its possible this new group of brains can come up
with an OLine solution. I assume thats priority number one with McV.

But even with a huge OLine improvement, there are so many holes they cant
be all ‘that’ good next year. I mean they have a QB who has only played half a season of real games. They need a DT, a DE, a LB or two, a CB or two, a WR or two, maybe a TE, and GRob has to work at the Guard spot and who knows about that, they need a LT which is hard to find….

We still have a cap. We need to spend wisely. I blame Trump, wait, I mean Fisher, or is it Zooey. Damn, I’m confused. I hate being old.

    Wait…?

You list more needs than I do.

To run a 3/4 they have the DT/NT and DEs. They could probably use a LB or 2, though, they already have Quinn, Tree, and probably Forster. I don’t know if they will like Barron in there. (Phillips ILBs don’t take on guards.) They could use a CB or 2. I don’t know what they have at WR…they could use a top 1, a 1000 yard guy. We’ll see about TE.

Either way the DL is set. Brockers was ALREADY playing NT and I think Hayes/Westbrooks can split LDE and Donald was and remains a 3-tech.

It is hard to say how many guys in the DE depth (Longacre, Fox) can convert to LBs.

How about Eugene Sims? Maybe he could be a stand up LB?

Yeah Sims too. One of those 3 could work out in that role.

Interesting discusion…it has become about depth.

So let me toss in someone else’s 2 cents.

    To keep the mix a-brewin’.

    off the net from alyoshamucci

While I scout for 3-4 teams and assign 3-4 designators to some players .. I have never evaluated for us in that manner.

What I’m working with … Brockers and Cam Thomas can play the nose. Sims and Hayes can 5 tech … Donald can likely do anything. I am not worried about the front 3 or 4 … we may need depth there, but I don’t think we have holes.

Forrest and Tree are fine ILBs in a 3-4, both played the middle in college, and they have plenty of size.

We HAVE to resign Tru … I am not willing to develop a plan where that is not the case because I think it’ll sink our defense to lose him. Not worried about our safeties. Keep TJ or not. It’s a deep draft there, so I’m looking late rounds for safety help.

Now, on to the bits of the draft …

CB is deep, but the high end is so thick and good, I can’t imagine BPA not being CB at 37. Im even thinking of trying to trade down for an extra 4th … where the depth gets really good. The top 10 or so players at the position are capable of developing into shutdown CBs. Lattimore, Humphrey, S Jones, Conley, Tabor, Wilson, A Jackson, Cordrea Tankersly, Desmond King, Tredavius White … that’s crazy talent. Then there are another 10 solid starters with big potential.

I think a “star” edge player is a first round thing usually .. and with Quinn on one side, we need another 3-4 backer that can be the “straight man” and blitz sometimes.

WR is a need … but I have an even grade on guys rated in the 2nd and the 6th.

    TE is a deep class.

There are no OTs I want. They aren’t there. The O line is so poor this draft it’s not worth taking any. Not kidding. The Senior Bowl will showcase this as the D line pummels the O line. The talent pool is so poor we need to get FA.

I think also that we get Garcon and Vernon Davis.

    TE is a deep class.

i see a lot of talk about drafting a wr this year.

i think they should draft a tight end.

    it’s an extremely deep class.

i could see as many as three tight ends going in the first round.

draft a guy like bucky hodges. it could make a huge impact on this offense.

if it was me, i’d sign a left tackle and center in free agency. either re-sign britt or try and sign one of the washington receivers. re-sign trujo. try and sign an olb if possible.

fill the rest of the needs through the draft.

    they still need a receiver (wr or te), a safety, a corner… dl/lb depth…

Yeah, below .500, that’s my expectation. It might just be learned helplessness at this point though.
