Blinkscout Seattle/San Fran games … some final thoughts
So, the year ended up being about what I expected, but with a lot of twists and turns and a TON of really stellar play. I am going to get the Fisher issue out of the way here … I have no want to fire Fisher … he just got the casket up and opened … he knows the graveyard and can likely find his way out better than anyone else we’ll find out there.
The Seattle game was about defense … and some offense. The Offense was more offensive in the SF game without Gurley … and honestly if he’s in the game we win by a decent margin. I suspect Fisher didn’t mind the 4 draft spots in exchange for plausible deniability resting his star player. Either way we got to see Case Keenum on his own … which is what I was wanting to see.
Im going to aim this at the game and the season … kinda.
The Great
1) Aaron Donald … I can’t imagine Watt beat him out for DPOY.
2) Barron … honestly could be in contention for comeback player of the year.
3) The CBs … Just a great job finding and developing talent all over the D backfield … I would hate to see them both go, but we’ll get 3rd round picks for each and I have full faith that we can replenish our Dbackfield given the talent coming up in this draft and what we still have on the roster.
4) Gregg Williams is a monster in his element with this personnel.
The Good
5) Tavon scored 10 times this year, that’s where we need him … we might be right in the sweet spot where he can’t command a salary we can’t afford.
6) I know Case Keenum’s limitations. I wasn’t sure if he was going to show me enough to allow me to form an opinion. But he did. He can take the shots he’s supposed to, but he does not improvise well under pressure. Maybe he will with time, but my sense is that his height prohibits him from seeing the field well. The 3rd down play to Britt at the end of the game .. the were guys open everywhere. He couldn’t pull the trigger. Game was too big for him. I am going with him to start next season for us, but not finish it.
7) Hayes … what a valuable player. Wow. The only way I can see us not losing and retooling at DE is if we lose our CBs and have to draft one early … then there’s next year for DE early. Either way we keep Hayes if at all possible.
8) Malcolm Brown got some strong carries, good to see him.
9) Wichmann looks exactly how I wanted him to.
10) Barnes had two really active games in a row …
11) Boras showed he had some creativity … especially on 3rd down
12) MO Alexander was good enough in coverage to accent the fact that he flies around behind the LOS and make him a serious weapon going forward. If we lose Mcleod I’m betting TJ slides into the deep safety and takes that spot.
The Bad
13) GRob is still limping along, and honestly we’re stuck with that for another year … maybe Battle can ready himself, but I think we stay away from OTs this draft and commit to teaching him.
14) Britt still drops passes.
15) Cook is still inconsistent.
16) Injuries have left us in a bit of an odd spot as far as some evaluation ….
17) Greg had some inconsistent games … that’s a bummer.
The GONE
18) Saffold cannot stay healthy and is no longer needed. How much is that? 5?
19) Cook cannot be the spark we need for the mistakes he makes … not with some of the players coming out this year and how powerful some of the guys over the last few years have been playing (Ertz, Eifert, Fleener, etc.) is that 6?
20) Quick … maybe someone falls in love with him and we get a decent comp pic back …
21) Either Jenks or Tru or both … bummer. By the sounds of the tweets they want to be paid. No way we keep both with the talent we have behind them.
22) Sims … someone will pay him like a primary backup …
23) Foles … I have no idea how, but they will find a way to move on from him. They have to keep Keenum and Mannion …
24) There are a few players I’d restructure, but that Im not willing to part with because I consider them coaches as well as players. (Britt, JL, CL)

[on the Donald tipped pass]
I think Donald was aiming. Specifically, I think he maintained trying “not to hit it too hard” so that he wouldn’t lose control of it while batting it at Sims.
I think the rapid cognition thing is part of his mental makeup … just a processing speed that’s superior …
he looked like he beat the guy, realized it was a screen (then pivoted like a 100 pound ballerina) and started fading back … in balance, and as soon as he saw the QB toss the ball he went up … but THEN .. when he realized he couldn’t catch it but was going to be able to get a full hand on it .. it was like he froze in midair. It was like I could see him thinking “Just tip it like a volleyball” …
I swear his body language was all about specifically batting it softly to Sims. Crazy.

I also think it will be nearly impossible to keep both CBs. We will have to say goodbye to some good defensive players, unfortunately. But, there’s good depth, and that’s the good news.

yes, can’t keep everyone, but a big part of the solid CB play the past 2 seasons is because the Rams have had a very good pass rush.

Yeah, that’s a good point. I like Trumaine better because he’s become such a good tackler, and has a nose for interceptions. With the D-line causing havoc, you’re gonna get some throws that could be intercepted by a corner like that.
