Allen Robinson II bringing physicality, versatility to Rams offense

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – It’s one thing to be familiar with wide receiver Allen Robinson II from afar. It’s another to finally get the chance to work with him up close and on the field.

As organized team activities kick off this week, Robinson’s new Rams teammates are learning a lot about him, and the early impressions are positive.

“He’s a stud,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said earlier this week. “I’ve been so impressed with just his overall professionalism day-in and day-out. He’s got a great way about himself, locked in in the meetings.”

If there’s anyone who had the most familiarity with Robinson prior to him arriving in L.A., it’s quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The two saw each other a handful of times when Stafford’s Lions took on Robinson’s Bears from 2018-2020, so Stafford knew what kind of receiver Robinson was and what he would bring to the offense. Now getting to work with him as a teammate, he’s gained an appreciation for Robinson’s work ethic – specifically his desire to learn the game and continue to improve as a player.

“I think a lot of people in his position could feel pretty comfortable with what he’s achieved in his career, but his inner fire is really evident when you get to work with him, which is fun,” Stafford said earlier this week.

Stafford described Robinson as a big, physical receiver that can run and change direction. Stafford said Robinson understands the game and has the ability to make contested catches, but is also a well-rounded receiver who can do “a lot of things.”

Wide receiver Cooper Kupp likewise sees Robinson as more than just a receiver capable of bringing down those jump balls.

“He’s a lot bigger than I think people think that he is,” Kupp said earlier this week. “He’s a big dude that can do a lot of things that smaller receivers do. He’s got great feet, can put his foot in the ground, run the underneath routes, do the options, the choice routes. All the different stuff that we do in this offense, he’s gonna be able to do all that stuff. I’m exciting about being able to have someone like that, that can do all those things and be a big body, big target.”

That body control is one of the first things McVay noticed.

“His transition in and out of breaks, how smooth he is for how big he is physically, it’s been very exciting,” McVay said. “Really love getting to know him a little bit more every single day.”

Robinson was eager for spring workouts to arrive so he could “fine tune” his role in the offense. And while that will be an ongoing process through organized team activities and later training camp, his first impression shows there’s lots of possibilities.

“He’s much more nuanced than I think he’s probably known for, and I’m really excited for him in this offense to be able to put that stuff to use,” Kupp said.

Thanks, ZN. Didn’t watch all the videos yet. But liked the “Bigger than we thought” breakdown. Like the way he put it. Something like #3 route with a #1 receiver.

And, yeah, I agree with him. If the Rams sign OBJ and he’s healthy, and the other guys are too? No way for the D to cover them all. That’s three legit #1 guys — Kupp, Robinson, OBJ — and Van Jefferson who’s a solid #3 type, with potential for more. Throw in Harris, perhaps, and even Tutu, and it rivals the GSOT days, and one could argue, with more depth. I doubt Tutu is ever going to come close to Hakim, but who knows? Stranger things have happened. But they really don’t even need him beyond a gadget play here and there to shake up the D. And Harris’s elite athleticism plus his size? May surprise us all.

It’s gonna be fun to watch this unfold.

I love the signing of Robinson.

That’s the first Allen Robinson interview that I’ve really watched. He makes a great first impression.

Agreed. Have always thought that about Higbee. Very good TE. Deceptively good athlete too, with excellent size and catch radius. That was one of the weak points, arguably, for the GSOT. Perhaps their only?

Overall, I’d say the GSOT had a better O-line. But the Rams right now have the better TE. In this era, with the cap issues, the escalating salaries, etc. etc. . . . it’s probably just impossible to stack your team across the board with good to great players.

The next best thing? Find ways to create mismatches with guys who may be the proverbial one trick pony, but they make that count. Surround your core “elite” players with those, and the “try hard” folks. Think outside the box and so on.

I think the current Rams staff does that about as well as anyone.

and the gsot had marshall. it’ll be hard for this offense to match the gsot for that reason. one of the best offensive players ever. to complement and even enhance the receiving options at their disposal.

And they got Faulk for peanuts. A 2nd and a 4th, right? He was a 4.3 guy, with ankle-breaking moves, and arguably the best pass-catching back in the history of the NFL. Great blocker too. Yeah, he was key.

Allen Robinson has never had a quarterback with Matthew Stafford’s ability. He has never played in an intricate, ever-changing, difficult to fully grasp offense. Not sure if we all know how much we’re going to love him quite yet.

Talked with Rams QB coach Zac Robinson a lot about Allen Robinson after practice today. The entire team (players and coaches) are fucking stoked to use him as creatively as possible and really feed him the ball. The hype is very much real.
