September 17, 2023 at 2:56 pm #145404znModeratorJourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigueRams RB Cam Akers will not be active today, per source and as @JayGlazer first reported a few mins ago..What to know so far about Cam Akers as a healthy scratch today, per source…Akers was praised by coaches and personnel people for a strong OTAs and camp, but McVay has also made it clear each week is a continued competition at almost every position:.Rams Brothers@RamsBrothersThis explains Royce Freeman being active today. What else can you chalk it up to, besides the same stuff he and McVay were dealing with last year? Seems like a healthy scratch. Huge blow.September 17, 2023 at 3:00 pm #145405znModerator

Other Rams inactives include RB Zach Evans (so Kyren Williams, Ronnie Rivers and Royce Freeman are active RBs), OG Kevin Dotson, OT Warren McClendon and DL Desjuan Johnson.September 17, 2023 at 6:03 pm #145408RamsMaineiacKeymasterSeptember 17, 2023 at 7:09 pm #145410znModeratorCameron DaSilva@camdasilvaCam Akers is reportedly not adhering to the Rams’ culture, which is about doing “what’s expected of you, and accountability.” The issues from last year have carried over to this seasonSeptember 17, 2023 at 8:34 pm #145420znModeratorJourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigueSean McVay calls making Akers inactive a coaches decision. “Me and Cam, we were close [in] his time here,” Williams said, via ESPN. “I’m hoping he goes somewhere that he can excel and do what he does best. Because Cam is a great football player, but even a better person. So good luck to Cam.”
September 18, 2023 at 10:15 am #145444znModeratorJourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigueEverything I know to this point about a situation McVay (and others) say is “different” than last year –.It seems as though this situation is a relatively recent development because Akers was featured in the Rams’ new home game hype video on Sunday, which takes some time to plan and produce.
McVay and other coaches have made it clear that this season, each week in practice and in games there would be a competition at most positions.
“This is more about, I’m always going to make decisions that are in the best interest of our football team,” McVay said on Sunday night, “and I have tremendous respect for Cam Akers, but I felt like for our football team today and in this game and as we move forward, that was going to be the best decision for us.”
September 18, 2023 at 1:03 pm #145451znModeratorCameron DaSilva@camdasilvaThe Rams have already had trade talks around Cam Akers. It’s hard to see him sticking in LA much longer.September 18, 2023 at 7:24 pm #145465znModeratorStu Jackson@StuJRamsSean McVay said he doesn’t have any updates on RB Cam Akers, but “I know (GM) Les (Snead) has talked to a handful of teams” and Akers’ agent in regards to a trade, and “that’s the direction we’re headed” with the situation.September 19, 2023 at 5:14 pm #145479wvParticipantI know this probly has nothing to do with the jettisoning of Akers, but if McVay really wants a ‘more physical’ running game and offense in general, then moving Akers would make some sense. He’s a good back but hardly a ‘punishing’ back.
If they can get a 5th round pick for him, I will not complain. I dont think Akers is anything special. Just a good solid back, in my view. And his ball-security trait is problematic.

September 19, 2023 at 6:06 pm #145481znModeratorJordan Schultz@Schultz_ReportSources: Several teams have checked in with the #Rams about a potential Cam Akers trade – including the #Buccaneers, #Ravens, #Raiders and #Browns – among others. It’s still possible Akers gets released (salary reasons), but the team is actively shopping him and he’s more than likely played his last game there. Akers had three consecutive 100+ yard rushing games with 3 TDs to closeout last season.September 19, 2023 at 8:42 pm #145485ZooeyModeratorI know this probly has nothing to do with the jettisoning of Akers, but if McVay really wants a ‘more physical’ running game and offense in general, then moving Akers would make some sense. Yeah, I think he’s worth about a 5th rounder which is why I believe the Rams will get nothing for him. I just seem to have a knack for over-estimating what the Rams should get in a trade.
In this case, his trade value is not determined solely by how good Akers is. It’s determined by the value difference between Akers and the next best available guy, whoever that is. And Kareem Hunt was unemployed at the start of the season. So would you give up a 5th for Akers when Hunt is free?
The Browns say nah.
September 20, 2023 at 4:36 pm #145500wvParticipantIts interesting to me, that we still dont know wtf the issue is with McVay and Akers. If this were the old Zygmunt Rams we would know.
Is it a good thing we dont know? Does it mean the Rams Org doesnt trash players to the media? Or is it an indictment of the LA sports media that they dont dig for stories?
Or what?

September 20, 2023 at 6:48 pm #145501ZooeyModeratorhe Rams have traded Cam Akers to the Vikings, according to CBS Sports Lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. The deal reportedly involves a swap of 2026 late-round picks. The trade comes three days after it was initially reported that Akers was on the trading block. Akers was inactive Sunday for the Rams’ 30-23 Week 2 loss against the 49ers.
On Monday, head coach Sean McVay essential confirmed Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer’s report by telling reporters that general manager Les Snead has spoken with a few teams about Akers, per The Athletic….
September 20, 2023 at 6:49 pm #145502ZooeyModeratorSo no 5th round value.
Swap of late round picks means the Rams traded Akers for next to nothing, but at least it’s not nothing.

September 20, 2023 at 10:53 pm #145518RamsMaineiacKeymasterI am guessing it was more about removing the distraction in the clubhouse and less about giving the team more cap wiggle room this year or jumping up one round for a 6th rounder.
This puts them about 3.2 million under the cap this season, for that just in case. While I was looking at the cap, I couldn’t help but peak at next season, which features $65 million in available cap space and 35 returning players.
In looking just at our starters, under today’s depth chart, they are only going to only lose one starter, Anchrum (RG), on O (assuming Kupp returns and replaces Jefferson as a starter) and four on D with starters Jonah Williams (LDE), Christian Rozeboom (RILB), Michael Hoecht (SLB), and Jordan Fuller (SS).
Nobody there that is not replaceable with $65 million in the bank. They should be pretty active in free agency next season filling in the gaps. Should be fun.

September 20, 2023 at 11:01 pm #145520RamsMaineiacKeymasterSurprisingly, $65 million might be less than I thought. Puts them in 10th for available cap. The Pats have nearly $123M.

I think he’s got something left in the tank, for sure.
My speculation, based on what leaked out last season, is that Akers didn’t want to be just a guy in a RB committee, and got grumpy about not being The Man. But I dunno.
He got robbed of an opportunity to be that guy when he blew his Achilles, and it’s too bad, but that’s football. In any event, he’s not Gurley, Jackson, Faulk, Bettis, Dickerson. More of a Barry Redden.
September 21, 2023 at 3:26 pm #145546wvParticipantYou know, Barry Redden was a 1st Round pick. I remembered him, but i did not remember ‘that’. 14th pick of the 1982 draft.

They got Deacon Jones in the 14th round, so it kind of balances out.
