Sense I’m getting upon poking around on report of Aaron Donald signing by end of week: while it appears there is increased dialogue as #Rams HC Sean McVay said, trying to predict if or when a deal gets done is pure speculation. (Not to go all cliche, but situation remains fluid)August 13, 2018 at 6:43 pm #89387InvaderRamModeratorat this point he’s the one player on the rams who’s a legit transcendent player. so he deserves whatever’s coming to him.
i think i like gurley more just cuz i love running backs.
but donald. definitely one of my favorite players all time already. and in my opinion one of the best ever. period. regardless of position.

Looks like this week, still some things to be ironed.

Sean McVay: Aaron Donald reports are “news to us”
A rash of reports emerged on Monday that the Rams and defensive tackle Aaron Donald are finally close to a new deal. Coach Sean McVay pushed back on the sudden momentum.
“I’ve seen a lot of reports out there, but that’s news to us,” McVay told reporters on Monday. “So, no news on that front for us. Same thing as just the dialogue, but as far as anything that’s changed, it hasn’t changed.”
That’s not what’s privately emanating from those close to the discussions. There’s a palpable sense that the two sides are indeed close.
Of course, it only takes one of the two sides to make an unreasonable demand as the plane is landing to keep the wheels from touching down. But there have nevertheless been multiple indications that the Rams and Donald, after months of trying, are getting toward a long-term deal that would tie Donald to the Rams for years to come.

It’s actually a very reasonable amount given the parameters involved. Not saying that’s what absolutely will happen. But it’s not out of the question at all.

PFT: Rumors swirl of Rams, Aaron Donald closing in on a deal
Privately, the evidence of a looming consensus also is beginning to pile up.
Per a league source, chatter is increasing regarding the possibility of the Rams and Donald getting a deal done soon.

Absence of information leads to speculation. Doesn’t mean it’s accurate. What we do know: Both sides want to make a deal and there is on-going communication to make it happen. But a gap remains in compensation number. My sense? This all comes to a head last week of August.*
As usual with rumors, they’re all over the map but they do share certain things. Taken together (which IMO is the best way to take them) nothing here is solid enough to predict when he will sign or how much it will be for. But all of them do share this—there’s movement, there’s compromise, there’s optimism, and an end is in sight. Even McVay says that (in effect) and he’s the most cautious. He basically says the dialogue is ongoing, it’s happening, that hasn’t changed. He only denies that it’s already finished. But remember at one point just a week ago the rumors and chatter were sounding like they were stalled.
I think the fact that (as reported) Kroenke got involved is interesting. The Rams want Donald and Donald wants to sign with the Rams, they’re just hammering out details. That sounds obvious except it’s different from saying “Donald is staling this” or “the Rams are stalling this.” Right now anyway, it looks like they are driving toward a deal and that means a compromise. No “Donald wants too much.” No “Rams offering too little.” No “why won’t he just sign.” No “why won’t they just sign him.”
August 14, 2018 at 8:40 am #89411znModeratorWhy Do We Root for Teams During Holdouts?
At some point, it became an accepted narrative that those in charge got to be there because of their tenacity, and that it’s O.K. for them to squeeze their operation and employees to the guts in order to maximize the bottom line because that’s what tenacious people do. It’s an endearing quality, didn’t you know?
Over time, we stopped questioning the whole thing and even found ourselves siding with the bigwigs because fighting the power gets you kicked off the train, and it’s better to be anxious and squeezed on the train than not on the train at all. So it’s no surprise that we either scoff at, or don’t care to notice when—even just a little—someone pokes the bear and earns a little extra for themselves.
Yahoo’s Terez Paylor brought this up during the Julio Jones holdout back in June, but it’s worth mentioning again now that Bears rookie Roquan Smith ended his holdout Monday. Smith was reportedly battling language in his contract that would, ridiculously, allow the team to recoup guaranteed money if he is suspended via the league’s new, hard-to-understand leading-with-the-helmet rule. Along the way, he was called selfish and greedy and a b—- by fans (someone also pinned this white-hot take on Smith to the top of their Twitter profile). His own coach noted that his starting position was probably in danger.
Khalil Mack and Aaron Donald, arguably the two best defensive players in the NFL, are still fighting for long-term security and fair market value for their production. Mack’s coach, Jon Gruden, once allegedly the highest-paid employee at ESPN thanks to constant flirtation with a return to the sidelines (and who we’re pretty darn sure is guaranteed $100 million over the next decade), doesn’t seem to be thrilled about it.

And now there’s this:
Shefter discusses Donald at in 1:36 in.
He says “I don’t think they’re going to get it done this week.” But like VB Schefter also says “both sides continue working and I think they’re hopeful but they haven’t moved the needle much to date and there are still issues to get through…there’s too much at stake for both sides not to figure out and work out something. Eventually I think something does get done.”
He gets into some figures and when he does he indicates he knows no more about any of this than anyone else.
August 14, 2018 at 3:53 pm #89429ZooeyModeratorMy thing is…I don’t know why they would be in a hurry. Having Donald ready to play against the Raiders is the goal. Every additional day on the field is an opportunity for Disaster.
August 14, 2018 at 6:31 pm #89430HramParticipantIt would be great if they could get it done 6-12 days prior to the season opener so the defense could practice together with everyone before the season opener. Not imperative, but it wouldn’t probably hurt.
I’m going to guess something long term like a 6 year deal.

August 14, 2018 at 11:30 pm #89434JackPMillerParticipantHow the Los Angeles Rams’ contract layout would look with an extension for DL Aaron Donald
The Rams are rumored to be close to locking up DPOY Aaron Donald with a long-term megadeal. Here’s how it would look afterward in terms of the other major players on expiring deals.
By misone Aug 14, 2018, 12:52pm CDTThe Los Angeles Rams may be on the verge of signing 3x NFL All-Pro DL Aaron Donald to a very large contract extension.
Many fans have suggested paying Donald so much is a mistake, is due to the fear of losing other players. That suggestion is something Rams VP/COO Kevin Demoff himself alluded to in a recent interview.
It’s time to debunk that myth once and for all.
According to Spotrac, the Rams are currently on track to have over $44m in cap space in 2019. However, the total cap has exceeded projections by at least $5m and in some years as much as $8m in each of the last several years, the total cap . So it’s entirely possible the Rams are looking at more than $50m in cap space next season.
Here’s where it gets interesting.
In 2020, the Rams are expected to have well over $90m in cap space (over $87m if projection is accurate).
Here are the players who have contracts expiring the next two offseasons:

August 15, 2018 at 12:49 am #89435AgamemnonParticipantAugust 15, 2018 at 1:27 am #89436znModeratorIn 2020 Goff will be in his 5th year. I would like to keep all our good players, but there is no must keep player there, except probably Peters.
Not only that but, if the Rams keep doing things the way they’re doing them, Goff will sign a 2nd contract/slash/extension in 2020 but it won’t hit the cap until 2021. Strikes and stuff aside, the 2021 cap is sometimes projected to be 220 M. Can they afford Goff, Donald, Cooks, Gurley, and probably Peters in 2021? My verdict is oh yes absolutely, with room for maybe 2-4 other big contract guys too.
According to Spotrac, the Rams are currently on track to have over $44m in cap space in 2019.
Actually overthecap has them at 58 M for 2019. Not sure what accounts for the difference.
Plus Gurley and Cooks already count against the 2019 cap, and Peters would be in his 5th year so they won’t need to put a large new deal for him on the books until 2020.
Let’s say they sign AD for 24. According to spotrac, that leaves 24 M in 2019 for other things including the draft picks. According to overthe cap, it leaves 34 M.
