September 22, 2024 at 7:31 pm #152311znModeratorI think it’s fair to say no one expected this. But, gutty great win from a beat up offense and young defense.
Special teams is helping them win this year.
When you have Stafford and McVay you always have a chance.
September 22, 2024 at 7:35 pm #152312HramParticipantWow!
September 22, 2024 at 7:36 pm #152314canadaramParticipantI need to hug somebody.
Xavier Smith better not ever find himself on the practice squad again.
Hopefully this marks a turning point for the Rams young defense up front, but the secondary remains vulnerable.
September 22, 2024 at 7:43 pm #152318joemadParticipantI can’t remember the last time that the Rams beat SF in a meaningful regular season game.
i was cussing out Coach Shula for his bend and break defense that looked as broken as his nose.
but Stafford made huge plays today, and special teams delivered big time and the rookie kicker did what he was supposed to do.
Rams snatched that one…..A very nice must win game in week 3.
on to Chicago.
September 22, 2024 at 7:44 pm #152319Eternal RamnationParticipantI did not think this would be a game when it was14-0 but holy smokes that was an exciting game and victory!
September 22, 2024 at 7:49 pm #152320canadaramParticipantAtwell’s best game I’d say. Even better than last year’s opener against Seattle.
September 22, 2024 at 8:35 pm #152324Billy_TParticipantSaw the highlights. Great comeback win, especially against the Niners. Looks like the Rams are rounding into shape, at least along their O-line.
Defense played well when it counted. Tough goal line stops, etc.
I wish I could have seen this one!
September 22, 2024 at 8:41 pm #152325wvParticipantOk, well….i know nothing. Been watchin the Rams since the George Allen days, and I know absolutely nothing.
That did not happen.

Yup.
I’ll give even odds for McVay + Stafford + the Haneyville RD4 JV football team’s 2nd string against anybody.

From what I saw, the OL is much more stable with 3 starters playing, and Jackson makes a difference. Above all else, that stability means Wms could finally run the ball. Limmer is a find, man. Not that he was brilliant, but the fact that he was even just solid is itself a blessing. Just think, 3 6th round rookies did important stuff in this game–Limmer, Whittington, and Karty. Plus Verse and Fiske look like players though they need some seasoning (defense was way up and down…still, Shula did the kind of 2nd half adjusting that we saw with Morris). So that’s 2 more rookies showing up.
Special teams were great…a far cry from last year, when the entire unit was ranked 32nd.
Stafford is Stafford. But (IMO) the 2 biggest changes over the ARZ game is that they could run the ball, and special teams made big plays in every phase.

36 career comebacks, tied for 5th all time with Drew Brees.
According to PFR, it’s his 7th as a Ram, counting the post-season.
Not counting game winning drives, just 4th quarter comebacks.
He had 8 in 2016 alone, a year when the Lions actually went 9-7. That means of course that 8 of their 9 wins that year were 4th quarter comebacks (including 1 against the Rams).
September 23, 2024 at 11:58 am #152344ZooeyModeratorI approve.
That was one of those games that took several key plays to fall the Rams’ way in order to succeed, the failure of even one of those plays would have lost the game. A special shout-out to Aiyuk and (especially) Bell for dropping passes to ruin Jennings’ career day.
Way to go, Atwell. I thought Smith and Whittington might combine to force Atwell on to the unemployment line, but the Rams get blown out today if not for Atwell. Speaking of Smith, it has been a while since the Rams have been able to do that on a kick return. Without that return, the Rams would have needed to pick up about 70 yards in 40 seconds instead of 30. The Rams’ special teams also kept the Rams in the game with the fake punt. Those plays combined with Moody’s missed FG means that the 49ers are the team with a ST problem this year. Karty and Smith have elevated the Rams’ ST this year, and here’s to that trend continuing.
As big of a win as this was for the Rams, I think it’s a worse loss for SF. They have to be completely sick over this. They controlled the game most of the afternoon, and could have turned it into a rout. I can’t help but think about all those redshirts swaggering into “Levi South” and gloating for the first 57 minutes of the game, only to have drive 6 hours back to SF stewing on that finish and the $500 they spent to attend the game. A couple more victories in LA for the Rams, and the 9er faithful will be more reluctant to make that trip.
Anyway. Matthew Stafford.
I just had to say that.
September 23, 2024 at 12:02 pm #152345wvParticipantShocking win. To me. Still, just can not believe it.
I cant remember a more startling regular season win in the McVay era.

September 23, 2024 at 4:07 pm #152347Billy_TParticipantFrom your comments, the highlights, and the boxscore, looks like the Rams had a running game again. If Stafford has that, he can pick apart most defenses. Throw in a solid ST unit, and the Rams will surprise a lot of teams that had written them off as too banged up.
Most important takeaway, though, is the Rams gotta make sure Kyren Williams never tries that somersault into the end zone again. Scary sight!

You listen to 9ers talk radio. What are they saying there?

They are calling it the worst regular season loss of the Shanahan era, but don’t actually seem all that shaken by it. They hate it, but still understand that it is early, and reinforcements are on the way (Greenlaw, Samuel, Kittle, McC).
They aren’t convinced Sorenson is getting the defense managed properly, and they blame Shanahan for throwing so much on the final drive inside of 2 minutes, and they think the DBs are a bit slow and thus vulnerable to the vertical, but they aren’t…like…overreacting to the loss, as much as they hate the Rams.
September 24, 2024 at 6:25 pm #152368ZooeyModeratorAlso, special shout out to Kamren Kinchens for knocking the snot out of Brandon Aiyuk on the last play of the game.

I think most of those redshirts live in LA.

NFL Demographics Quarterly just published an article last year contending that almost none of the do. And, iirc, they said 6 hours was on the low side. Many of them drive 7+ hours.
