I assume that’s based on McVay announcing starters wouldn’t play…

This is the 9ers Superbowl. Their fans on Twitter are calling out McVay for being scared to play certain teams so he’s tanking(ridiculous) or that he doesn’t want them heading into the playoffs with the Rams starters getting hammered by the 9ers(more ridiculous). So this game means everything to them.

The Rams just want to get out healthy.

If this meant something the Rams would be at least a 6 point favorite–even with Ficken. Maybe even more.

as much as i hate to say it. win or lose. that team is gonna be tough next year. garoppolo looks good. hyde is a solid rb. they got garcon. and shanny is a helluva coach.

hopefully they have to cough up tons of cash to sign garoppolo. and they have no money left to sign anybody else.

Here is whats going to happen — the Rams Scrubs are going to hang in there and hang in there and Fuckin FICKEN is gonna kick a 49 yard field goal with one second left to win it.

    SF 16

    …And thus began, the Legend

    Peter King

    Jimmy Garoppolo, quarterback, San Francisco.

The 49ers have been seeking a franchise quarterback since concussions forced Steve Young to retire in 2000. For the bargain-basement price of a second-round draft choice (which gets later in the round every week), they’ve almost certainly found him. In a month, Garoppolo—unless he’s a Hollywood matinee idol mirage—has become the long-lost solution.

Signs were everywhere in the 44-33 stunner over Jacksonville’s strong defense, led by the 10-play, 79-yard, easy-as-pie drive to open the game. Garoppolo’s six scoring drives out of 10 possessions (not counting the halftime kneeldown), including three late ones when the Jags made it a game, showed his command of an offense that’s still new to him.

Think of it: Garoppolo was traded eight weeks ago today, and if you watched on Sunday, you’d have thought he’d been in the Kyle Shanahan offense for four years. It wasn’t the 21-of-30, 242-yard, two-touchdown, one-pick, 102.4-rating performance that was eye-opening, or the 44 points on a top-five defense. It was the command, the grasp of the offense, the confidence.

PFF: NFL Week 17 Preview: 49ers at Rams

The San Francisco 49ers visit the Los Angeles Rams in Week 17 of the 2017 NFL season. PFF previews the top player matchups of the game.

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-nfl-week-17-preview-49ers-at-rams

    49ers

    PFF Ranking: 24

    Coverage by: David Neumann

MATCHUP: SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS OFFENSE VS. LOS ANGELES RAMS DEFENSE
QB Jimmy Garoppolo on deep passes — Jimmy G has carved up opposing defenses up in the short and intermediate areas since taking over as San Francisco’s starting quarterback. On passes traveling 19 yards or less in the air since Week 13, Garoppolo has completed 74.8 percent of his passes (fourth) and averaged 8.9 yards per attempt (first). Perhaps the one thing we have yet to see Garoppolo do over the past four games, however, is to connect on deep throws. When targeting players 20 yards or more downfield, only three of 14 attempts have found their intended target, with two of those completions coming against busted coverages that left players wide open downfield. San Francisco did find some success on deep passes against this Rams defense back in Week 3, completing two of three attempts for 109 yards.
WR Marquise Goodwin vs. CB Trumaine Johnson — Goodwin has been one of the primary beneficiaries of Garoppolo’s ascendance over the past month. Pre-Garoppolo, the speedy wideout was used almost exclusively as a deep threat and averaged 1.65 yards per route run, ranking 35th out of 89 qualifying receivers. Goodwin’s game has seemingly evolved with Garoppolo at the helm and he’s up a full yard per route, averaging 2.66 yards per route run over the past four games, the sixth-best figure during that span. Johnson, who should be lining up across from Goodwin for much of this game, has also been playing well of late. During the past three games, Johnson has allowed a lowly 43.8 percent catch rate into his coverage (14th of 128 defenders with at least 10 targets during that span) while breaking up four passes and keeping receivers out of the end zone.
49ers interior linemen vs. DI Ethan Westbrooks — Westbrooks will attempt to fill the void left by Aaron Donald, who will finish his season with 91 total quarterback pressures, 25 more than any other interior defender. Westbrooks has 15 total QB pressures this year on just 154 pass-rush snaps, and he’ll attempt for more against a 49ers interior offensive line that has allowed 96 pressures this season, tied for the seventh-most. Had Donald suited up in Week 17, he would have been pushing to become just the second player in the PFF Era to accumulate 100 pressures.

MATCHUP: LOS ANGELES RAMS OFFENSE VS. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS DEFENSE
T Darrell Williams vs. Edge Cassius Marsh – Williams has not seen much action in the regular season with veteran left tackle Andrew Whitworth in town. He has allowed a single sack in his 10 pass-blocking snaps this season for a pass-blocking efficiency of 90.0. His preseason play gave a lot of optimism for the future, where he ranked second in pass-blocking efficiency (98.5) among tackles with at least 64 pass-blocking snaps. His two pressures allowed were by far the lowest amount by any tackle with at least 100 pass-blocking snaps, with the next lowest total being five pressures allowed. His opponent, edge defender Cassius Marsh, has generated eight of his 12 quarterback pressures from the right side over the last three weeks, tied for 16th-most among edge defenders.
T Darrell WIlliams Los Angeles Rams

WR Josh Reynolds vs. CB Ahkello Witherspoon – When quarterback Sean Mannion was throwing to Josh Reynolds in the preseason, he targeted him four times on passes of 20 or more yards. Reynolds caught two of those passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Since the preseason, he has seen only one such target of 20 or more yards and he did not catch it. Of his other 16 targets, he has caught nine of them for 88 yards, one touchdown, and has generated a wide receiver rating of 87.4, 11th-highest among rookie wide receivers. With Jared Goff most likely resting in the season finale, Reynolds will have his deep shots against rookie cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon. It should be noted, however, that Witherspoon hasn’t given up a single touchdown since Week 12 and is currently allowing a passer rating of 66.4 since Week 13. Both Reynolds and Witherspoon were ranked in the top-15 among their respective positions in PFF’s 2017 draft guide.

RB Malcolm Brown vs. San Francisco run defense – Brown has been limited to 72 carries between the preseason and regular season in 2017, but has been able force tacklers to miss 12 tackles in the run game and four more in the passing game, while averaging 2.36 yards after contact per attempt. The only three games he has seen double-digit carries came with the Rams having games in hand, but he did average 4.2 yards per carry in such games and forced three of his six missed tackles. Meanwhile, the 49ers defense is tied for sixth-fewest missed tackles over the last five games with 29 combined. On top of that, they have inside linebacker Reuben Foster, who is in his rookie season but owns the third-highest run-defense grade (92.3) among all inside linebackers and has the second-most run stops (21) since Week 9.

What They’re Saying: The San Francisco 49ers

Each week TheRams.com will be taking a look at what Los Angeles’ opponents have to say about facing the Rams. Heading into Week 17 of the regular season, check out what the San Francisco 49ers’ coaches and players had to say about their upcoming matchup against the Los Angeles Rams at the Coliseum:

On the Rams resting their starters on Sunday & how that changes the 49ers approach:

“This is the National Football league — their starters, their backups, whoever are all good. They all get paid to play. I don’t care who you are and so we’re approaching this week as we would any other week. We’re going to get ready for their starters and whoever else they play. I mean they have some ball players, they have some good depth and it’s a great defense. So we’re going to prepare for a great defense.”

    – 49ers’ Center Daniel Kilgore

“Yeah, we approach it the same way. You can’t be so game plan specific on certain players because you don’t know who is going to play, but you can’t change anything else in the mindset that you do. I wish that they were all playing, but I totally get why they wouldn’t. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I know what (Head Coach) Sean (McVay) said, so I’m sure that that will be true to at least some guys. But, we’ll find out Sunday who they are and we’ll see how our game plan goes with that. But, it really doesn’t change in anything that we do.”

    – 49ers’ Head coach Kyle Shanahan

“Not really [upset about Rams resting their starters]. You try to every week say that you’re facing a faceless opponent and no matter who it is you want to have the same mindset no matter what type of game it is — first game of the season or last game of the season. I think that we’ve done that pretty well the last couple of weeks. And I think if we do that, we’ll be good on Sunday.”

    – 49ers’ Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo

On if he has a sense that he and Sean McVay are going to be going at it for a while down the road in the NFC West:

“I wish we were this year. We’re in the same division. We plan on competing for this division each year and I know the Rams are there this year and that’s a credit to them. But I hope that we’re there too and there’s only four of us. I know they’ve got a good coaching staff and a lot of young talent, so I have a pretty strong feeling that they’re going to be good for some time. Hopefully, we can get there next year. I hope what you’re saying is the case.”

    – 49ers’ Head coach Kyle Shanahan

On how he thinks this Rams team is compared to the team he faced in Week 3:

“They’re just better. They were doing good earlier in the year, but I’m pretty familiar with what they do and how they want things to look. They’ve been fortunate enough to stay very healthy. They’ve gone through a number of games playing with the same guys and whenever you do that you get better throughout the year. I’ve seen that on both sides of the ball and I know they’ve added two new schemes on the offense and defense. To see them in Week 3, which they’re playing well in Week 3, but now to see them now you can tell they’ve played a lot of football together this year and when you do that you get better at it. They’re looking good going into the playoffs.”

    – 49ers’ Head coach Kyle Shanahan
