So, that was close. Our defense played a great football game and seemed to be totally solid in knowing what they are supposed to do. Our offense got shook up early and never got comfortable. So be it. Shaun Hill was a backup for a reason.

    The Good

    1) Aaron Donald’s 8th sack. He got to the number I predicted and I’m going to go ahead and pat myself on the back for that.

    2) Gaines continues to impress regardless of who he is defending. And his tackling is pretty brutal.

    3) Barron seems to have found a real home in this defense as a Spur . . haven’t seen one truly used in the NFL, but he could totally be capable of doing it.

    4) Our receiving corps has done what they needed to in order to fix their drops. I don’t get that gut clenching feeling each time the ball is in the air.

    5) Tavon is getting a better feel for the 4-7 yards he’s supposed to get on the jet sweeps. He is taking the corner or his cut at full speed now.

    6) Trumaine Johnson is a solid CB. I really like our top 3.

    7) Jenks burst going after INTs allows him to get his hands on balls that no one else could get close to. He catches either one of those and we win the game I’d bet. Game of inches, man.

    8) The defense seemed to be well prepared by Williams to go after what the Cards were doing.

    The Confusing

    9) I don’t know the rules of PI, I guess? What did Jenks get called for? He turned his head and looked to be playing the ball. He had position. I didn’t understand that.

    10) How do two non-knee hits in two different games result in two ACL injuries for QBs against the same team?

    11) I also must not understand holding, because it seemed like Donald was getting held every other play.

    The Bad

    12) We were unprepared to handle the twists and stunts of their pass rush. Being unprepared is something that could have been taken care of.

    13) We let ourselves get gashed as few times in Run D.

    14) We let the QB escape a few times he shouldn’t have.

    15) Another game when Quinn primarily went outside the entire game. Don’t get it.

    The Ugly.

    16) Shaun Hill. You CANNOT get that attitude during a game. I don’t care how many times you’ve been hit or how frustrated you are. You are being paid millions of dollars and the position INCLUDES your psychological demeanor. I played little league where pitchers would be crying on the mound and still throwing strikes. If you’re injured, fine, tell coach and sit down. If you’re not, you best be focused and exuding confidence no matter how many times you’ve been hit. You hit Bailey in stride ANY of the 4 times you went at him and missed and its a whole different game. You’re not focused? Sit on the bench. I hated when Bradford made those faces and I hate it equally with you dude.

QBs do not have the luxury of living in reality at the pro level. You are an insane optimist for 60 minutes. That is part of the job. You have never been hit, your pocket will hold up, and everyone will be where they are supposed to be the entire game, and you’re going to win. If you cannot accept those as true for 60 minutes on gameday, REGARDLESS of the evidence, then you’re not a starting QB.

    Mini mock draft.

    1) Brandon Scherff OG. He’s not a tackle. He’ll slide to us as a result, and we wont have to worry about OG for a decade.

    2) This is an interesting round for me. A WR will likely be here, but I like some of the talent that will slide. A LB, and there will be superior talent at DE. I’m going to go LB though, to make sure we have a backup for JL when he ages . . Kendricks from UCLA is my guy unless AJ Johnson or Benardrick Mckinney falls. Of course, I could also go Shane Carden or Brandon Bridge here. I don’t have a real reason to bite on QB with Bradford still in the mix though.

    3) Gallek OC Boston College . . he’s going to rise up the charts after the senior bowl, and if I had to take him in the second I’d do it.

    5) Dupree DE Kentucky. 6-4 260 and mean on a terrible team. I would take either he or his counterpart Zegarret Davis (sp?) at 6-6 265. One should be there. Both are a little raw but supremely talented.

    7) Cam Worthy WR ECU Overshadowed by Hardy, the NCAA all time receiving leader, his ability has caught my eye every game I’ve watched of theirs.

UDFA Uzomah TE Auburn. 6-5 268.
This guy always has good stuff.

Seen some blaming the OL and Schotty for this loss

Look again. NFL Network did an excellent job after Game Rewind showing how Hill missed four TDs in that game – two underthrows (Britt and Bailey) which easily could have been six with better throws had he led the WR instead of forcing them to turn back to the ball to catch them – and two throws to covered players when another player is running free on the other hash and already passing the single coverage before the ball has left Hill’s hand.

So – 4 potential TDs purely on Hill making shorter throws or to the incorrect WR when the line did give him time.

This also means Schottenhiemer called plays which got receivers free. Hill just didn’t hit them.

The OL did completely suck in run-blocking this game. The Cardinals did this to the Rams in November also. Their DL is better than the Rams OL, Just give the Cardinals credit there, and let’s hope the Rams work on improving the OL more this off-season. That is the biggest weakness on this team now.

Wells cost them a red zone down with a horrible snap which had nothing to do with anyone but himself screwing up

Back to their DL being better than our OL, there was some bad coaching calls in terms of protections. When the same guy on a defense gets 5+ free runs at the QB in one game, somebody isn’t paying attention or making the necessary adjustments to account for that guy. Especially when it’s a DB. That’s on coaching.

So, while their is some blame for coaching and OL play, Hill had the opportunities to make game-winning type plays at least 4 times and did not successfully execute one of them.

The biggest difference in the game – Mason’s turnover. Without it, the Rams probably aren’t trying to drive for a TD in the final 5 minutes, and are likely kicking a game-tying FG. Who knows what would have happened then?

    Hmmmmm. No QB? Really?

I would take a QB rather than a LB
I suppose. I refuse to believe
there are no good QBs in this
great land of ours. This is America.
Land of the Free. Home of the brave.
I believe there is a red, white, and blue,
    QB out there.

I didnt much like Hill’s facial
    expressions, either, but then,
I wasnt the one getting pounded
play after play. The OLine was
    dominated. Hill was rattled.

    Cosell noted that Hill wasn’t
    really accurate against Washington either.
The WR’s had to adjust to the ball in that game.
In the Ariz game, Hill was just about 6 inches
more inaccurate than in the Washington game,
and it made a big difference.

They need a Center and OG
    and a healthy Saffold
    to beat the Cards.
