2016 NFL Draft order and needs for every team

    By Lance Zierlein
    NFL Media draft analyst
    Published: Oct. 27, 2015 at 11:39 a.m.

This is the first-round order for the 2016 NFL Draft, with the top positional needs for every team. The draft order is determined by record, using strength of schedule, and then conference and division records as tiebreakers (record and strength of schedule are official tiebreakers to determine draft order). So strange to have to scroll down so far to find the Rams. I hope that continues. Hard to disagree with that assessment. I’d be ok with a receiving TE early, if there is one worthy of picking.

A LB might be a need as well.

    1. Detroit Lions CB : Left tackle, inside linebacker
    2. Baltimore Ravens S : Rush linebacker, wide receiver BPA = DE/Ramsey/S
    3. Tennessee Titans RB : Safety, inside linebacker BPA = DE/Ramsey/S
    4. Cleveland Browns ILB : Wide receiver, defensive end
    5. Houston Texans QB : Running back, inside linebacker
    6. Jacksonville Jaguars OC : Cornerback, safety
    7. San Francisco 49ers QB : Right tackle, wide receiver, defensive line
    8. San Diego Chargers WR : Linebacker, quarterback, center
    9. Kansas City Chiefs OT : Defensive end, cornerback
    10. Tampa Bay Bucs OT : Defensive end, cornerback, guard
    11. Chicago Bears QB : Offensive tackle, cornerback, guard, pass rusher
    12. Dallas Cowboys RB : Quarterback, defensive tackle, linebacker
    13. Buffalo Bills OT : Linebacker, safety
    14. Washington QB : Wide receiver, cornerback
    15. New Orleans Saints CB : Guard, wide receiver, pass rusher
    16. Seattle Seahawks OT : Wide receiver, defensive tackle
    17. Philadelphia Eagles OT : Offensive tackle, pass rusher, cornerback
    18. Miami Dolphins OT : Guard, cornerback, inside linebacker
    19. Oakland Raiders CB : Offensive tackle, right guard, safety
    20. St. Louis Rams WR : Defensive end, cornerback, center [probably 1/wr – 2/de – 3/cb gone…]

» Playoff picture … if the season ended today

    21. Pittsburgh Steelers CB : Quarterback, safety
    22. Minnesota Vikings LB : Offensive guard, defensive end
    23. New York Jets OLB : Right tackle, tight end, inside linebacker
    24. Atlanta Falcons ILB : Tight end, outside linebacker, wide receiver
    25. Indianapolis Colts OG : Cornerback, outside linebacker
    26. New York Giants CB : Running back, safety, defensive end
    27. Arizona Cardinals DE : Center, inside linebacker
    28. Denver Broncos OT : Center, running back, tight end
    29. Cincinnati Bengals OC : Wide receiver, linebacker
    30. Green Bay Packers OLB : Tight end, defensive tackle, offensive tackle
    31. Carolina Panthers OT : Safety, cornerback

    [CB/5 – S/1 = 6 RB/2 – WR/2 – TE/0 = 4 QB = 4 OT/8 – G/1 – C/2 = 11 DE/2 – LB/5 = 6] These are position totals.

This is a bit easier to read.

Most teams need OTs, CBs, and the big one QBs. There seem to be a lot of CBs in this draft and more than a few DEs.

Now a couple notes.* If we cut some players.

Long saves ~12M for next year.
Cook saves ~13M over the next 2 years.
Laurinaitis saves ~14 over the next 2 years.
Saffold saves ~14 over the next 3 years.

After yearly exspenses, I figure we have ~39M in cap space next year. If we cut those 4 players we add 26M in cap space in 2016. I am NOT making any recommendations right now, just throwing out information.

I am just showing that we can do virtually anything, as long as we don’t screw up future cap years. As far as cutting players, sooner or later they will be gone anyway. We have only 2 players signed for 2019, Quinn and Hekker.

The roster will keep churning. We have to look for value when we spend Cap Dollars and Talent in the Draft.

Our starting FAs are mostly CBs. A lot of teams need CBs. But, we have depth there and this draft seems to be rich in CBs. Not a lot of teams have DE as a high priority need. We have good depth there, but we can get talent there in the draft and some of our guys are getting older.

In fact, I believe we could draft any position in the draft and be fine, QB, WR, TE, LB, line, whatever. Just get talent.

We can sign or keep any of our players, but not all. What we don’t sign we find in the draft. Just get value. We are in a good place.

I feel OLB could be top need. If we are drafting at 20, I would not Myles Jack OLB UCLA. Of course that is if he pass medical test and such. Jack at one OLB spot, and Olgetree at the other could be scary. I know I wrote about I like Lagoun Treadwell WR Ole Miss, I predict he will be gone in the top 10. There are nice quality WR’s later in the draft.

20th would be a good place to draft a TE that can block and catch the ball; Jared Cook is just not good enough and the other TEs are not special. I want special. I would be OK with the top rated center in the draft here too, if he has the right size and feet to justify the pick. Not sure if I want a LB here. I am not keen on using another first round pick on the defensive line.

Both William Hayes, and Eugene Simms are UFAs after this season, and then by the 2017 NFL Draft, Chris Long becomes a UFA as well. Long I predict, will be looking for a deal like 5 years, 100 million, and $70 million guaranteed. I bet some team will give him something that close, and hopefully it is not us.

The way this years draft lays out. I am going best CB, best DE, TE, then WR, in that order. I might take two if good ones are available. I won’t pass on Cook, if he is there. It is early, but right now that looks like it maximizes the talent and it is independent of whoever I can sign as FAs. imo

ps, I am cutting Cook. 😉

I’d consider OLB, if we are at 20. If Myles Jack is healthy, and can pass test, Jack and Olgetree as OLBs could be a nightmare too teams, and at 20, a perfect fit. I feel we will be OK at CB. I predict we sign either Jenkins or Johnson, and play them along side with EJ Gaines. In round 2, which we will have two 2nd rounders.

As of now, based on how I see it for the first 4 rounds,
    1. pick 20 – Myles Jack OLB UCLA – slides due to injury, and other team needs.
2a. pick 39 – OJ Howard TE Alabama
2b. pick 42 – Jonathan Bullard DE Florida
    3. pick 64 – Pat Elflein OG Ohio State
    4. pick 86 – Ricky Seals-Jones WR Texas A&M

That would work too, Jack. The point of this thread is that the Rams are in good shape. There are a lot of different ways this could happen and be good. My last post is just my own opinion. Yours counts just as much.

I draft players. Me and Snead draft players, not positions. I might use the first 3 picks on defense, depending on how the draft plays out. It is sort of like, did we need Donald when we drafted him? When I draft, talent trumps, especially in the first 2 rounds. Talent and my opinion. 😉

Ok. But i kinda thot DT was pretty close
to a ‘need’ last year. But i get what yer saying.

I’m hoping need and talent line up in the
    next draft.

The offseason is gonna be ‘very’ inter esting,
what with Chris Long, and Janoris and Barron
and Saffold, etc up for grabs.

What’s yer opinion on keeping or jettisoning
    Chris Long?

My own view is, if Snisher thinks they are
seriously in the running for a Ring next year,
then keep him. …i bet Belichex would dump him.

Long is in the maybe category, him and Laurinaitis and Saffold. I think talent and need do match up in the next draft. It is just that not everyone see the needs the same way. Anyway there are a lot of options to go in a bunch of different directions.

Lets look at WRs. Not too many teams seem to NEED a WR. There are a lot of them in the draft, although nobody to match a franchise WR like Cooper. Some of them could be #1’s. Doctson reminds me of Bruce. I like the TE Evan Engram as a WR as much as Treadwell. I like Travin Dural as much as about any WR. Chances are one of them is there in the 2cd round. imo

alyoshamucci does well on draft stuff. Look at his stuff.

Barron is making himself real valuable. But we have Alexander. Who we keep has to do with getting value from cap dollars. Again, that is not seen the same by everybody and there are lots of good ways to handle that. I don’t think we can predict how that will go at this time.

Due to roster moves and different figures from web sites and other adjustments, the current cap estimate for 2016 has changed. It is now 34.5 million for 11 UFAs. That is still plenty to do anything we want. imo
    ..
You can go here and use this link if you don’t trust my shortcut estimate. 😉 http://overthecap.com/calculator/?Team=Rams

We can use the franchise tag if we choose.
If we sign everybody, that will be more than 53 players on the roster and what are we going to do with the players we draft next year?
The players that we don’t sign could give us comp picks.

Yeah it’s dizzying to think how many options they have. The draft, their own free agents, maybe some cuts. They have a lot of people to sign, but then they have 3 1st/2nd round draft picks and many different ways to prioritize signings and get them done.

I suppose that one priority they will have will be to maintain DL quality. But then, there are a lot of ways to do that.

Speaking of which…I have this hunch that one day we will look upon the Westbrooks signing as one of the smartest things they have done so far.

i like the tight end from alabama too. and i don’t like cook.

somehow they need to get another weapon for foles.

i would put a premium on re-signing jenkins. i’m starting to change my thinking on him.

as far as first round, yeah, just draft best player available. i think they’re in a position to do that. it’d be nice if it was a defensive back. make a strength even more of a strength.
