Incredible back-and-forth game. The Rams made a ton of mistakes in all three phases but also got incredible plays out of Matthew Stafford, Colby Parkinson, Puka Nacua and Quentin Lake to keep their season alive.Gregg Rosenthal@greggrosenthal

It was the first playoff game of Young’s career, and he played one of his best games in the NFL.
Stafford was just a little better. After the Panthers took that late lead, Stafford was nearly perfect on the next drive, and then the Panthers couldn’t get into field-goal range as Jimmy Horn dropped a pass on fourth down to end the threat.
The Rams could go on to win a Super Bowl. The talent is there and they spent most of the season playing at a championship level. But if people weren’t worried about the warning signs for the Rams late in the season, they might be now.

Sean McVay has won 9 playoff games in 9 seasons with the Rams. That’s the same number this team won in the previous 33 seasons before he arrived.…
Is there a quarterback in the NFL you’d rather have late in the fourth quarter than Stafford? The likely MVP struggled for much of the game after starting 8-for-8, but he came through when it mattered most. After the Panthers took a 31-27 lead with just over 2 minutes to play, Stafford took the ball and didn’t flinch.
He led the Rams down the field and scored a game-winning touchdown on a beautiful pass to Colby Parkinson. He went 6-for-7 for 71 yards on the final drive, with his lone incompletion being a drop by Davante Adams over the middle.
Stafford didn’t have his best stuff on Saturday, throwing one interception and nearly another in the second half before Puka Nacua turned into a DB and broke up the pass, but he rose to the occasion late, as he always does.

wvParticipantWho do the Los Angeles Rams play next?
====================
The Rams will play either the No. 1 Seattle Seahawks, No. 2 Chicago Bears, No. 3 Philadelphia Eagles or No. 6 San Francisco 49ers in their second playoff game. Here’s the NFL playoff scenarios for how they could face each of those teams in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs:
No. 6 49ers at No. 5 Rams (if Packers beat Bears, 49ers beat Eagles)
No. 5 Rams at No. 3 Eagles (if Packers beat Bears, Eagles beat 49ers)
No. 5 Rams at No. 2 Bears (if Bears beat Packers, 49ers beat Eagles)
No. 5 Rams at No. 1 Seahawks (if Bears beat Packers, Eagles beat 49ers)The Rams can’t face the No. 7 Green Bay Packers in the next round because of seeding.

Soft coverage with Horn out for Rams’ final drive
The Panthers looked poised to pull the upset in their first home playoff game in 10 years after taking a four-point lead with less than three minutes left.
But they were shorthanded defensively for the Rams’ final drive, with Horn in the medical tent being evaluated for a concussion. With the secondary playing soft coverage to avoid the big play, Stafford took the Rams downfield, completing 6 of 7 passes for 71 yards. His only incompletion came on an Adams drop.
Despite good coverage by Tre’von Moehrig, Stafford dropped the game-winning, 19-yard touchdown over him and into the arms of Parkinson.
It was a valiant effort by the Panthers, who were 10-point underdogs and trailed by 14 in the first half. But they ultimately ended on a three-game losing streak, their longest skid of the season. — Joseph Person, Panthers beat writer

ZooeyModeratorMiddlekauff is right, imo. You cannot trust the Rams at this point. The way they have been playing since the end of November is concerning. The secondary had been playing very well in the middle of the season, and the Rams were rolling. It appeared they had fixed their STs.
But they have been playing dangerously for the past 7 games. They’ve blown double digit leads multiple times (going back to Philadelphia), and they just aren’t reliable. They haven’t dominated. How can you trust the secondary to shut down Caleb Williams? Or cover Smith-Njigba?
The Rams will go as far as the offense can carry them this year. The good news is that that is potentially all the way. But, man, there are some leaks in the hull that Stafford is going to have to keep bailing out. Even Stafford has been inconsistent, but when the game is on the line, he delivers. He seems to always be laser accurate in the 4th quarter anyway.
So what are we rooting for here? Seattle or Chicago next?
I don’t think I care. The Packers blew up my preferred road by losing.
January 11, 2026 at 12:17 pm #161045
znModerator. It appeared they had fixed their STs.
I looked up the culprit from the blocked punt, #34, rookie DB Tanner Ingle. He’s had a total of 43 special teams snaps all season, and 17 of those were in the wildcard game. He was promoted from the practice squad to replace an injured player. My bet is, he hasn’t been practicing on special teams and is a green rookie who got fooled on that one play by a veteran. The punt blocker, Isaiah Simmons, is a 6’4 OLB/DB (Ingle is 5’8) who is a 6 year veteran and who has had 650 career snaps on special teams.
Does that relieve the new STs coordinator from responsibility? No, that’s not supposed to happen regardless. Especially in a playoff game. Should the new STs coordinator have anticipated that Ingle against Simmons was a mismatch? Yes. But I also think that one play was the result of one player screwing up, and that is easy to fix. You straighten Ingle out or replace him or both.
