I was at the game today so I thought I would give you all some impressions I came away with.
1. If you didn’t already know, our defense is for REAL. The Packer’s fans in my section, including my wife, were extremely frustrated with the Packer offense today. I kept trying to tell my wife that it was mostly the Ram’s defense, not the lack of Packer’s offense, but she, like most Packer fans, think Rodger’s walks on water and the idea of him not being able to do whatever he wants, doesn’t enter the conversation.
2. Our secondary thrives on gambling in coverage and they are going to get burned at times, but there were plenty of times today where they were so good in coverage that Rodger’s had to run for his life.
3. In my opinion, whenever Rodgers had to run we REALLY saw how valuable Tree is to this defense. I believe half the runs Rodgers had today would have been negated if Tree was in there.
4. Foles just was running for his life a good part of today’s game. Our OL has real trouble with their assignments in pass protection. It just seems to me that on stunts and blitz packages, they are not sure whom they are supposed to pick up. As such, they either miss their blocks or are out of position to effectively pass block.
5. Not only do our receivers drop passes and fail to gain separation, they also don’t help Foles out when they see him in trouble! When you see your quarterback break the pocket they need to break their pattern and come back to Foles to give him someone to throw to rather than stand around and watch the show. I mean Foles isn’t going to run like Rodgers, so the receivers have to help him out! And BTW, I think Cook has a mental block about catching the ball now. I just think he has convinced himself that he is going to drop the ball in critical situations. He believes it, so it happens.
6. Gurley is SPECIAL! But I find myself holding my breath every time he touches the ball. The Rams have been snakebit so many times with players and injuries that I can’t help myself
7. If there is a boneheaded play to make, stupid time for a penalty, or a ball that bounces the wrong way, these Rams will find a way for it to happen. As a Ram fan for 50 years, I sometimes wonder if someone in the Rams organization made a deal with the devil back in 1999 for the Super Bowl win and from now to eternity we will have the worst luck of any team in the league. 🙂
All that being said, after today’s game and even though I came away disappointed with the loss, I feel better about the chances for a playoff visit with this team than I have in many years. When these guys have something turn against them, they don’t walk off the field with their tails between there legs like losers, but like determined competitors that plan on overcoming the obstacle. And Nick Foles may not be mobile, and he may not throw the greatest looking pass, and he may make some bad choices, (and today he made some bad decisions), but he is a gamer, and we have lacked that for quite a few years.
Well just a few thoughts to chew on since we have 2 weeks before the next game.

4 turnovers is bad especially when you get two off Rodgers.
taking the sacks on first two would have been better.
on the 1st INT, the smart play is take the sack, punt, play defense, but he wound up and threw it into three guys. Now, this has worked a couple of times this year, but it’s definately a “feast and famine” style. This one, game the Packs 7 points. And with 3 misseg FGs, it seems Rams hung in there, and giving this on up. If he can try and play a bit more disciplined
on the last one in red zone, cannot tell if it was good or bad decision, but he never saw inside defender and even if that guys is not there not sure Tavon has a shot at it, so poor choice and poor throw,.
Foles was playing like Rams were down by 2 TDs with 4 minutes to go in game, rather than in a close dogfight. Trying to make things happen, as Roeth does or other QBs, but on 3rd and long and your line gets whipped, maybe taking the sack is better than a pick-6 and a pick. Someone needs to show files a reel of interceptions and see how many come when you have big-time pressure.
He was under pressure all day, and it seemed that in first half he was playing the same as he did in last of 2nd half, just like he was a basketball player who needed to do everything. There is a time and place and you can say someone needed to do something in 4th Q, but he played that way in first half.
It’s like he was trying to be Michael Jordan when he’s really Kiki Vandeweghe…the protection was poor and Foles tried hard, just does not have skills to play behind a poor line.
With Hekker, you punt and you can count on 40 net yards.
My guess is Foles will not try to do “too much” so early from now on.

What a Packer Fan told me about the Rams
Have an acquaintance who is a die-hard Packer fan. Does not live near me, nor do I talk to him much. This is the text he sent me after the game FWIW:
” Damn, dude. The Rams defense created hell for the Packers. I don’t understand this score. Tough game. Just a couple of plays that blew it for you guys. If the Rams get a better QB, they will be a complete team. Defense is really good. They just need that QB to seal the deal. Just wait till their offense bulks up. Rams will be hard to beat.”
Just remember this is coming from someone who doesn’t watch the Rams like we do. His comments are based solely on todays game. Thought others might be interested in what a non-Ram fan had to say….

LaramThe good
Todd Gurley – BEAST! But here is the kicker. Even with 159 yards rushing from TG, the Rams got only 10 points and nothing in the pass game. Something doesn’t jive there. That should have opened PA, or at least given Foles an extra beat or two in the pocket. Really a strange phenomenon to me.
Rams defense – Played extremely well and better than I thought they would. Three to’s against Aaron Rodgers and really just 14 points allowed is an exceptional defensive performance. Other than a couple of mental errors, they were strong. Offense put them in bad positions.
Janoris Jenkins – He got looks but was only thrown at once that I recall. He has really cleaned up his fundamentals.
Mark Barron – Was all over the field today making tackles and had a nice deflection which caused an INT.
Run blocking – Was intermittent, but when it was good, it was very good.
Johnny Hekker – Great heads up play by the Hekker. Kept the play alive by buying time, made a risky throw but got away with it.
The bad
Nick Foles – Taking two delay of game penalties. When you lean down under center and look up, you are looking right at the play clock. No excuse for it.
Cignetti – Was bad today and did absolutely nothing to help his o-line or the qb in the pass game. When you qb is holding onto the ball to long and you o-line can’t hold off the pass rush…you as the OC need to adjust. Quick throws, screens, slants, something to slow down the rush and get Foles some easy throws. Its like a shooter in basketball, sometimes you need a lay-up just to see the ball go through the net.
Zuerlin – Low trajectory on one kick, poor accuracy on another. Would you really trust him in a BIG game to win it?
The ugly
Nick Foles – Yep he shows up in two categories. I know he got very little help from his o-line, but his decision making was absolutely horrid. He forced a number of passes and when he did have time to throw, his accuracy was not good. I understand that a qb will have bad days, but I’m seeing some tendencies in Foles that I have seen before. Take a sack Nick, sometimes its better than the alternative.
Receiving core – With the exception of Austin and Bailey, who didn’t get many opportunities in the game, save the Heykel and Jekyll play…they were all bad. Cook is Cook and I still don’t know why Quick jumped for the ball when he didn’t have to. More times than not when you see that type of play. the receiver drops the pass. Britt was invisible, and Kendricks has never been a consistent option. I didn’t see as many drops as whats being reported, but nobody stood up either!
Pass pro – Way to many breakdowns by the o-line from mental to physical errors. Reynolds blowing a blitz assignment, GRob getting whipped, Saffold, Barnes, Hav, Brown…take your pick. Just an awful performance today by a unit that we hoped was gaining some momentum.
Coaching – Jeff Fisher was horrible in clock management and understanding game situations. Down two scores in the 4th quarter the Rams should have been in hurry up mode. With 4:00 left in the game they were acting like they were up two scores, instead of behind two.
A 63 yard fg really Jeff? He is totally enamored with the fact that GZ has a big leg. We’ve seen it now for 4 years that he has been the Rams HC. Go for it, I think NFL stats will prove 4th and 7 has a better chance of being made over a 63 yard fg. Play the percentages!!!
Jeff Fisher is also responsible for what we are seeing from the o-line. Most of us expect a young inexperienced o-line to be up and down. So he really didn’t give this team much room for error by relying on one. He doesn’t have Tom Brady at qb, nor does he have Julio Jones at receiver.
When you have players of that caliber, you can overcome some deficiencies upfront. You can win some games that you might otherwise lose, and remain competitive in the division while you give a unit time to come together.
With Fisher its always been the necessary pieces on offense that continue to hold his teams back. You would think he would adjust after so many years, but obviously you can’t teach this old dog, new tricks!.
Just poor coaching and careless play on offense that has to be demoralizing to a defense that once again…played its heart out!!

I find it hard to disagree with any of that.
That pretty much nails it.

Really good post by Laram, except for this bit. Going for it is Ok, Trying the FG is Ok. In fact, I agree with Fisher. I would go for it. I know that the NYT 4th down Bot would have gone for it.

I think that you can use logic to trump statistics in this case. When time becomes critical, whether a play can win or lose becomes the critical factor. imo
Also since we need 2 scores and a FG will do for 1, it becomes what is my best chance to score a TD. I have a better chance of scoring a TD with the ball on my own 35 with first and 10 than I do going for it on 4th and 7. It is about a 1 in 5 chance.
Not making a first down or missing a FG, both lose the game. Making a FG gives me 1 score and do it now give me the most time to try for a TD. Making 4th and 7 just gives me a first down and runs time off the clock. I still need 2 scores.
It is fine to go for it and and figure it doesn’t take much to get a chance at a FG later. But that might well be a another 63 yarder. 😉 So, I am fine with either play, but I prefer Fisher’s in this case.

We could really be 4-1. That’s the truth, and while there are good and bad things about the game that I will address, there is no reason to think we can’t be a part of the conversation come December.
Also there are a lot of players who may or may not be with us next year whose play I’m watching closely.
The Great (rare in a loss)
1) Todd Gurley … I don’t think I have to say anything else, but the possibility of having a 1000 yard rusher pro/bowler rookie who missed the first 3 games is just wild.
2) We held the Pack offense to 17 at home, and Rodgers threw his first two picks in 3 years there.
The Good
3) I think TJ is playing at pro bowl level, specifically the 3rd down stop …
4) Our coverage was on point. Besides a slip that led to the Jones TD and the busted coverage (C’mon TRU!) that led to the Montgomery TD we were in good shape. Pretty sure they threw five TDs against us last time. Joyner for me stood out, but Tru’s INT and Jenkins (must be new) footwork handling a double move were stand outs also.
5) Quinn strip sack … just like seeing it.
6) Quick on the field, more on him in other sections …
7) Benny is still running hard after making the catch.
8) JL with a heads up AND athletic play.
9) I may be missing something, but this game seemed like GRob’s best. Curious about everyone else’s take on it.
10) Tavon’s TD was inspiring. Really thought he was dead to rights at the 2.
11) Foles continuing to throw a really good deep ball and took a TON of hard hits.
The Bad
12) FOUR INTS. Lord. First one Gurley fell down, not Nick’s fault. Second one Jared stopped running, not Nick’s fault (though a questionable decision to not eat it there) … 3rd … the pass to Kendricks in the end zone, he was double covered/bracketed. THAT WAS A TERRIBLE CHOICE. Can’t remember the fourth but the third was a killer.
13) Tru you can’t get lost in that defense …
14) Mcleod, you’re not athletic enough to save yourself after a mistake.
15) Garret Reynolds, c’mon man. Matthews coming and getting the QB in his drop?
16) GZ, I get that it was windy … but I was bummed to see you miss those.
17) Quick, you HAVE to come down with those. We need you active and playing your size.
18) CL injury … ugh. Bummed.
19) Aaron Donald, quietest game as a pro for me, are you injured?
20) Only 2 sacks?
So, these are now, in my opinion, from here on out, all winnable games. Gurley is the real deal. All we need to do is make some progress in the passing game and we’re in good shape. I get the fan frustration, I just am unlikely to be moved by it. Not my style.
